PHOENIX - A controversial new state anti-immigration law has many American
Indians alarmed that tribal sovereignty has been violated, with the looming
possibility that individual liberties will be threatened.
The law, S.B. 1070, makes it a crime to be in Arizona illegally, and it
requires police to check suspects for residency paperwork. It also bans
people from soliciting work or hiring day laborers off the street.
The state's legislature passed the bill in late-April, with Republican Gov.
Jan Brewer signing it into law shortly thereafter.
Republican supporters have argued that the measure is necessary to protect
the nation's borders by reducing illegal immigrants and the burden they
place on taxpayers. Some believe that drug cartels and crime will also be
combated.
Those ideas have been widely controversial, with many progressive groups,
Hispanics, and the Obama administration protesting the law. The main
questions center on what factors police will use to decide if a person
should be required to show paperwork.
Racial profiling is a top concern, and lawsuits to challenge the law's
legality are certain.
As the debate has progressed, Native American perspectives have also quickly
become part of the mix. Many observers have noted that it was the indigenous
people of North America who welcomed European immigrants to the continent
hundreds of years ago.
The Inter Tribal Council of Arizona has been one of those leading the
charge, sending a letter that urged the legislature and governor not to pass
the law.
"We have a range of concerns, including tribal sovereign nations not being
recognized as able to define and protect their own borders as they see fit,
and the possibility that tribal citizens will be profiled by police," said
John Lewis, director of the organization.
Lewis and other ITCA staffers traveled to Washington after the law passed to
educate national policy makers about their concerns. Various Native American
groups are calling on tribes and Indians to oppose the measure, hopefully to
get it repealed.
"This impacts all indigenous people, and the lawmakers need to know it,"
Lewis said. "America's boundaries are not tribal boundaries."
Lewis noted that some tribes, including the Tohono O'odham Nation and the
Pascua Yaqui Tribe, are on and near the U.S.-Mexico border.
"Our tribes have much interaction with Mexico, through culture and life, and
I'm not sure people realize that there's an economic impact involved as
well."
Lewis and others believe that American Indians are likely to be unfairly
targeted, based on their appearance and travel patterns. The American Civil
Liberties Union has expressed similar concerns, and has vowed to monitor
that aspect of the law.
"Even if they are just stopped for five minutes, that is five minutes too
many if the rights of people have been infringed," Lewis said.
Ian Record, an education manager with theNative Nations Institute, said he
is concerned that he could be targeted, since his truck has a "Latinos for
Obama" sticker on it.
"It's scary that something like that could be a factor in you getting pulled
over. My wife is Latina. We shouldn't be afraid of that."'
Record noted that citizens of the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Pascua Yaqui
Tribe have been strongly rallying against the law.
"It complicates things for tribal citizens, especially of those nations. It
has to be greatly concerning to everyone that law-abiding citizens of those
nations are likely to be pulled over," Record said.
"The tribe's sovereignty and the tribal citizens' rights are obviously being
harmed."
Robert Warrior, the Osage president of theNative American and Indigenous
Studies Association, echoed those issues in a letter to the governor April
24.
"Your action as chief executive of the state of Arizona will, when the law
takes effect, give license to abuse by police and citizens, making ever more
murky the possibility of working towards a just future for all people in the
Americas," wrote Warrior, director of American Indian Studies at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
"S.B. 1070 will have tremendous negative impact on indigenous people on both
sides of the border between the United States and Mexico, and it ought to go
without saying that some of the people most impacted by this invidious law
are descended from peoples who lived in the Sonoran Desert centuries before
anyone even thought of the United States. Regardless of proximity or
descent, though, the new law is morally wrong and panders to the worst
currents in U.S. politics."
Warrior said in an interview that the regulation seems to be "myopic by
design," since it seeks to take complex realities and make them seem simple.
"Given that many thousands of indigenous people are from communities that
have straddled the U.S.-Mexico border since long before that border came to
be, I see this law as a tragic reminder of how polluted political culture in
the U.S. has become."
Warrior said tribal citizens throughout North America should see the
situation "as a call to think about where we are headed as indigenous
peoples whose right to exist predates the borders that now so often keep us
apart."
"We need a growing consciousness of what our persistence and presence means
in the hemisphere. For those of us who are U.S. citizens, a law like this
provides an opportunity to oppose the worst currents of U.S. political life
and to stand in solidarity with those whose human rights are violated in the
name of security."

For much of the last forty years, ever since America "fixed" its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, "When are African Americans finally going to get over it?
Now I want to ask:
"When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?
Recent reports that "Election Spurs Hundreds' of Race Threats, Crimes" should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in "Bombingham," Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King.
Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than "talk the talk"
Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood.
We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent.
Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years, conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes.
Call for their impeachment, perhaps. But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.
But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we're back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we've proven what conservatives are always saying -- that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president.
But instead we now hear that school children from Maine to California are talking about wanting to "assassinate Obama."
Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, "How long?"
How long before we white people realize we can't make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us?
How long until we white people can - once and for all - get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color?
How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior?
How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites?
How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin?
How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations?
I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners?
How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do?
How long before we start "living out the true meaning" of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that "red and yellow, black and white" all are precious in God's sight?
Until this past November 4, I didn't believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don't believe I'll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem.
But here's my three-point plan:
First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built, I'm going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people.
Second, I'm going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama.
Third, I'm going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can "in spirit and in truth" sing of our damnable color prejudice,
"We HAVE overcome."

One sinister explanation for its use is that it's a way of getting rid of a toxic waste product. An even more sinister purpose is to pacify the public through a chemical in the drinking water as was done by Nazi doctors experimenting on humans during the dark days of the Nazi regime. -Ed

Some people say that protesting or demonstrating is futile. Protests alone cannot bring Change. Yet the reaction of the elitists to planned protests indicates that they do indeed have an effect and often challenge the colonial, hierarchical, unjust and capitalist status quo.
Canada is fast becoming a militarized zone and a haven for corporate interests. Any opposition to the elitist thugs' plans will scare off nervous investors. The Toronto Stock Exchange is a global centre for luring investment dollars, especially in the speculative mining industry and the very profitable military industry itself.
Maintaining an illusion of peace and prosperity in Canada is essential for Bay Street to function. As the world is increasingly in crisis, this becomes more difficult every day.
The word "protest" suggests opposition and brings up the dialectic of conflicting interests, opposing positions and different values. Good demonstrations involve street theatre and seek to Inform the public about the Truth and other points of view on matters that affect everyone. It's about psychological warfare. Protest marches, rallies, workshops and concerts all play a role where participants can learn to understand their own intent and goals. Drums of all kinds and dancing help to create a good state of mind in the streets.
The elitists depend on a highly refined pack of lies and deception to keep the populace passive and subdued. The Canadian media is their compliant tool. They are using it right now to influence the public mood. As the anger of people everywhere increases, it becomes more difficult to control that mood yet the corporatists encourage a bit of violence so they can practise using their toys on unarmed people. It's called flexing.
Earlier this month, the news reported a car bombing narrowly stopped in Times Square New York City. Meanwhile, plans are being made for a huge antiwar protest there at the end of the month. Is the attempted bombing, ie "terrorist attack" some kind of pretext to step up security and harass protest planners even more?? What will happen when tens or hundreds of thousands of people march in the streets of New York?
In Ottawa this past week, the news reported a fire in an RBC (Royal Bank Canada) bank on Bank Street. The building was gutted. Two days later, the news called it a fire bombing - including video footage - by a group (not named) that claimed it was in retaliation for RBC sponsorship of the Vancouver Olympics on stolen Indigenous land. The wording seemed to be lifted from the anti Olympics literature. The group's message included a threat of more to come with the G8 and G20 conferences planned for Huntsville, ON and Toronto later in June. No mention was made of the CANSEC war traders show in Ottawa June 2 and 3. Yet protests and a peace rally are planned for the gates of Lansdowne Park, also on Bank Street, where the private military industry event is to be held. Is the fire bombing going to be used to step up surveillance on "protesters" in Ottawa and Toronto and elsewhere? Will Indigenous be targeted?
Will protesters at these events be corralled and attacked by massive police and military style presence? Will police be tear gassing and tasering elderly people and terrorizing mothers with babies in strollers? Will police be disguised as protesters smashing windows, fighting and fomenting violence? Cops have been exposed many times at protest events, even pretending to be media cameramen?
The Global TV newscast also said that the G20 protest organizers (not named) condemned the Ottawa bombing. Do some people really think that occasional peaceful protests alone will stop globalization or war shows much less wars of occupation and plunder all over the world?
At the same time, everyone knows that violence will lead to more repressive violence and further curtailment of civil liberties. One fire or attempted bombing will be taken up as a pretext for a greater show of force against people in the streets. Either way, tensions are greatly heightened. The facade of business as usual in North America is crumbling. Investors are getting extremely nervous.
The mention of "Indigenous Land" is a trigger phrase. The elitists know that our Indigenous assertions of Sovereignty are the greatest Obstacle to resource plunder and theft. With growing unity between Indigenous and nonNative against the destruction of Mother Earth, the big shots are living their worst nightmare. They just hate to see ordinary people getting together to throw off the yoke of oppression that burdens people all over the world. Why can't the elitist thugs and their henchmen be reasonable?
Now the vociferous and biased media pundits refer to the fire bombings - plural - in Ottawa as if there were several and a situation out of control. They predict that G20 protesters will be out "rioting because rioting is their hobby". The issues are never explained or discussed.
People are learning from experience all the time. Decisive and creative actions will be taken to bring Change. Time is overdue. "Enough is enough" is a rising chorus. People all over the world must hear the voices of resistance coming from within the belly of the monster that crouches atop our precious Turtle Island. We will never give up.

Plans for the proposed protest over allegations of “inadequate news coverage” by Rapid City’s mainstream media regarding the law-enforcement shooting death of Christopher J. Capps are growing in an effort to improve the focus and safety of the event.
Capps was shot to death by Pennington County Sheriff’s Department deputy Dave Olson on May 2 in an open field behind Sunnyside Mobile Home Community, just north of Rapid City.
Sponsored by the United Urban Warrior Society, the honoring-and-protest event is being reset for mid-summer “between the Fourth of July and the Sturgis Bike Rally, according to James Swan of Rapid City. He said a specific date remains to be selected.
However, because of safety issues involved, the proposed event’s venue is being changed to the Rapid City Band Shell, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, according to Swan, who also indicated that organizers are considering making it an annual event.
“That’s where – at the band shell -- we can be off the street and in a safety zone for speeches, entertainment, drum groups and such to honor Capps’ life and at the same time to protest that no mainstream media in the Rapid City region identified the 22-year-old Oglala Lakota as a Native American.
Swan said that he is being contacted from as far away as “both coasts” by American Indians and non-Indians alike. He said the event was “growing by the day, so we need more time to plan it well.”

We watched The Dudesons last night. It was horrible. Over and over these crazy white men in headdresses and feathers would injure themselves and scream things like, "I'm becoming a Native American!" One man injured his testicles and anus, screamed, "I think I ripped my a***ole!" and his friends replied, "You're the Chief now!"
When they performed their "Break Out of Jail" skit, they asked one of the white men dressed as an Indian what he did to wind up in jail. He replied, "Honestly, it was my own casino that I burned down." Before they were slapped in the face with fish, the white men said, "True Native Americans, they fish with their mouth. And with their hands." The only authentic Native American on the show, nodded his head and said, "It's true." The voiceover continues, "Native Americans are like bears. They catch fish with their mouths. This is a rite of passage for fishing."
MTV is a pillar of this economic and cultural racism. They have the power to create cultural attitudes and cultural shifts, especially among young people. But with shows like The Dudesons they are choosing to use this power to degrade and exploit.

What are the positives of this show? Will it open new roles for Native people in the industry? Will it interest people to research Native Culture? Does this show celebrate Native Diversity? Or does it perpetuate more stereo types? How will this affect our Native children already being taunted at school? Does this show aid or hamper our causes such as and not limited to: high rates of suicide, domestic violence? Treaty right violations?
This is not just a National show, it will have INTERNATIONAL viewing-

Breaking: White powder scare at Philadelphia's Liberty Bell 20 May 2010 U.S. authorities were investigating a balloon containing a suspicious white powder at Philadelphia's Liberty Bell Center on Thursday. "It is being treated as a hazardous material, but it is nothing explosive. It has preliminarily tested negative for radiological, biological and explosives so we're still trying to determine what it is," said FBI spokesman J.J. Klaver. He said one street and a pedestrian mall had been shut down while the investigation continued.
Philly's Liberty Bell Center, streets evacuated 20 May 2010 The downtown Philadelphia building that houses the Liberty Bell and the streets around it have been evacuated because of a suspicious item that looks like a balloon. National Park Service rangers called police on Thursday afternoon. Park Service spokeswoman Jane Cowley says it's unclear whether the item is inside or outside the Liberty Bell Center. A police department spokeswoman says the suspicious item is described as a blue balloon-shape container with a white powdery substance on it.
Senate overcomes GOP obstacle on overhaul of financial rules --Democrats, with the help of three Republicans, vote to close debate on the rewrite of financial regulations. 20 May 2010 The Senate on Thursday broke through Republican opposition and voted to close debate on the most sweeping reform of financial rules since the Great Depression keeping 'too big to fail' as policy and the Bankster Party in power, paving the way for passage of the landmark bill by week's end. The 60-40 vote ended a potential filibuster that stood as the last major hurdle to Senate approval of the bill. The legislation would establish a consumer financial protection bureau within the Federal Reserve, expand government regulation of the financial industry and establish other safeguards against a repeat of the severe financial crisis that struck in 2008.
