Dear David,
Thousands of homebound seniors will not get a hot meal tonight because Congress has cut funding for Meals on Wheels as part of the sequester.
For millions of seniors, Social Security isn't enough to lift them out of poverty and hunger. In the past decade, there was a 78 percent increase in senior hunger.
Sincerely,

Tell Congress to Protect Organic Farmers and Honey Bees in the Farm Bill! |
Tell Congress to support amendments to the House Farm Bill that will protect farmers from GMO contamination, protect pollinators from pesticides, and restore funding to vital organic programs. |
This week the House of Representatives will begin debate on its Farm Bill and there are a number of possible amendments we have our eye on this year pertaining to genetically engineered crops, the protection of pollinators, and supporting organic farming. Stop GE Crop Contamination Just recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that unapproved, genetically engineered (GE) wheat was found to have contaminated an Oregon farmer’s field. The GE wheat, known as Roundup Ready, was developed by the Monsanto Company to withstand direct application of Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide. The Oregon wheat incident was not the first time a GE field trial has had serious consequences for farmers, and unless Congress does something about it, it won’t be the last. This incident underscores why stronger regulation is long overdue. Center for Food Safety is calling on Congress to use the Farm Bill as an opportunity to improve the oversight of GE field trials and protect farmers and the environment from future contamination incidents. Protect Pollinators Over the past decade, honey bees and other pollinators have been suffering record-high population losses. Given that one in every three bites of food is reliant on bees and other species for pollination, the decline of pollinators demands swift action; our agricultural economy, food supply and environment depend on their well-being. Support Organic Center for Food Safety is a strong supporter of organic agriculture. Unfortunately, a number of vital organic programs that received full funding in the Senate Farm Bill are currently not funded in the House Farm Bill. We urge you to tell your Representatives that now is the time to advocate for sustainable, organic farming! The challenges we face will not be resolved unless we invest in agriculture that protects and enhances our future – not destroy it. Amendments to the House Farm Bill are being discussed now, so please take action today! |

Gore: NSA Snooping Not 'The American Way'
Gore: NSA Snooping Not 'The American Way'
Former Vice-President Al Gore has criticized the National Security Agency’s collection of millions of phone records as “not really the American way” and said that, in his view, the practice is unconstitutional.
Gore used the words of one of the country’s Founding Fathers to make the point that concerns about national security should never trump the rights of every citizen.
“I quite understand the viewpoint that many have expressed that they are fine with it and they just want to be safe but that is not really the American way,” Gore said. “Benjamin Franklin famously wrote that those who would give up essential liberty to try to gain some temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Attack on GHRC for commemorating victims of Genocide in Guatemal
Posted by Kathryn Johnson (founder)
On Saturday, we at GHRC had the pleasure of taking part in a powerful art installation in Washington, DC. After three years of preparation, the organization One Million Bones blanketed a section of the National Mall with bones made of various materials to bring attention to genocide committed around the world. The organizers of One Million Bones had extended a special invitation to GHRC and the Guatemala community to take part and commemorate Guatemala's genocide victims.
GHRC staff, interns and volunteers, joined thousands of others in laying out the bones. Our group took the opportunity to read the names of the victims in the Ixil Triangle included in the charges against former generals RÃos Montt and RodrÃguez Sánchez.
We posted a photo of the event on our Facebook page on Saturday afternoon, and were shocked to see the response. Our wall was covered by an energetic debate about genocide in Guatemala. It was heartwarming to see all the comments in support of justice for victims, but sad to see that there were also many comments full of hate, anger, and denial of the crimes committed against Guatemala's indigenous people.
Unfortunately, many of the people who posted on our wall are the same people who have been spreading the same messages of hate and denial in the Guatemalan media and organizing protests in support of those who committed atrocities.
The courageous genocide survivors, along with their lawyers, the judges, and the organizations who support justice, have been victim to this type of attack constantly since the RÃos Montt trial began. The messages in the media in Guatemala are not just slander. They are threats of violence. For example, Ricardo Méndez Ruiz, founder of the Foundation Against Terrorism, who posted on our wall, said in an interview with Guatemalan TV station Guatevision that the civil society leaders pushing for justice could be assassinated. In his post on GHRC's facebook page, he called us a "terrorist organization."
We don't want to hide this debate going on in Guatemalan society, but we adamantly condemn the use of defamation, threats and messages of hate. We would love to see our page covered with messages of support for justice and for the victims and survivors of genocide. Can you add your voice athttp://links.causes.com/s/ clK3mt?r=CDFE?
