This Monday on Just Peace, we welcome two guests who will speak about the impact of current events in the Middle East: Dr. Mark Braverman and Dr. Nagi Gebraeel.
Dr. Mark Braverman is the Executive Director of the Holy Land Peace Project, an interfaith, ecumenical organization that promotes education about and action for Middle East peace in U.S. faith communities. He is also author of the book, "Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land." Dr. Braverman will be speaking at several Presbyterian churches and Sunday school classes here in Atlanta this coming week (at Oglethorpe, Trinity, and First Presbyterian churches). His visit is sponsored by Joining Hands for Justice of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. Further information may be obtained by calling 404-233-5469.
Dr. Braverman's grandfather, a fifth generation Palestinian Jew, was born in Jerusalem and emigrated to the U.S. as a young man. Dr. Braverman himself was reared in the Jewish tradition and lived and worked in Israel as a young man. Returning to the Holy Land in 2006, he was transformed by witnessing the occupation of Palestine and by encounters with peace activists and civil society leaders from Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. Since then, Braverman has devoted himself full-time to the Israel/Palestine conflict. Dr. Braverman is also cofounder of Friends of Tent of Nations North America, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Palestinian land rights and peaceful coexistence in historic Palestine. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions-USA, the steering committee of Friends of Sabeel North America, and the advisory council of the Washington Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace. He is a charter member of American Jews for a Just Peace.

We also welcome Dr. Nagi Gebraeel, Associate Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Gebraeel is one of the local organizers of rallies here in Atlanta in solidarity with the Egyptian people, the most recent of which took place this Saturday in front of CNN Center. "Egypt has lots of resources but only the elite prosper," Dr. Gebraeel has been quoted as saying, "There is no middle class, the people are impoverished. 41 million people live below the poverty line, the price for basic food is very high, and the infrastructure is decaying."

"When crazy people call you crazy,
you know you're sane.
When evil people call you evil,
you know that you are a good person.
When lairs call you a liar,
you know that you are truthful.
Know who you are and don't let
others tell you who you are."
