The National Parks Service recently sent out a community wide letter concerning the Occupation graffiti on Alcatraz Island and the removal of the Water Tower grafitti. Craig Glasser of the NPS, has invited people who responded, including The International Indian Treaty Council and anyone else interested in the renovations at Alcatraz, to go on a tour of the proposed renovations. The tour was scheduled for Wednesday, July 20th (this week) at Pier 31. Leonard Peltier (Prisoner # 89637 - 132) was tossed into the 'hole' (solitary confinement) in USP Lewisburg on June 27, and his support network doesn't know why this happened. He is in bad health, due to kidney problems and diabetes. That beating he got from a prison gang in January, when he was transferred to USP Canaan, probably didn't help his health. Please ask your support network to call Fed. Bureau of Prisons Director Thomas Kane, at 202-307-3198, to request that Mr. Peltier be returned to general population. Ignorance may or may not be bliss, but one thing is certain: it is veryprofitable. According to Buddhism, all suffering derives from ignorance,and it rarely hurts until it is too late; ignorance keys into theaddictive potential in all of us and, thereby, allows somebody to make ahuge pile of money on enslavement.
The detrimental health effects of cell phones, WiFi, electromagneticfields (EMFs), and the microwave-based technology we use daily makesworrying about our kids experimenting with drugs, sexual escapades,alcoholic binges, or a touch of crime insignificant - in comparison to the WiFi-equipped school you send them to, the cellphones you may have bought for them, the hours they spend in front of theTV (forget the content – the TV itself is worse), and the microwave ovenfrom which they often receive their meals. Sex, booze, drugs, and crimeare part of the dark side of life's education: one often learns fromthose mess-ups to go on to make healthy choices. Now consider that this"progressive" and seductive radiation technology has the powerto obliterate life, phase out our biological future, and kill thebrain.
I am one of those suckers seriously injured by cell phones. Oursolar-powered cottage on Manitoulin is far from phone lines; so, for 25years we used public phones. Last summer, a cell phone tower was erected1 mile from my study window. Being a social animal, I thought this wasfabulous! Over a period of two months I quickly developed indescribableheadaches, piercing pains in my right eye, and spontaneous bleeding frommy right ear. My ophthalmologist diagnosed two cataracts in myright eye: the hallmark of microwave radiation injury ( age-relatedcataracts appear in both eyes), as we know from research begun on WW IIU.S. Navy personnel injured by radar equipment. In a future Vitalityissue I will discuss the successful treatment I am undergoing and how Idid not turn into a Luddite.
I am in stellar company: World Health Organization Director General, GroHarlem Brundtland (1998 – 2003) and convener of the World Commission onEnvironment and Development in 1987, did not permit any cell phones atWHO's Geneva headquarters because they caused her debilitatingheadaches. Of course, she had the wrath of the industry descendupon her accordingly. She is currently suffering from cancer.
In 2004, the WHO defined electrohypersensitivity (EHS) as: "… aphenomenon where individuals experience adverse health effects whileusing or being in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic,or electromagnetic fields …. a sometimes debilitating problem[occuring] several orders of magnitude under the limits ofinternationally accepted standards."
In fact, everybody is at risk. Epidemiologist Dr. Sam Milham firststudied childhood leukemia clusters in the 1970s that eventually provedbeyond any doubt that the risk for this disease is directly related tothe presence of powerlines, and subsequently also cell phone towers;those areas of the world that have little or no electricity have almostno incidence of leukemia. In addition to leukemia, evidence now supportsthat cell phones cause especially brain tumors, cancer of the eye,salivary glands, testicles, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and Alzheimer's. Thisradiation also contributes to the development of autism and ADHD. Whileseveral causes are known for all of these conditions, research hasconfirmed that the use of cell and cordless phones and lap-top computers,speed up their manifestation such that people in their 30's are nowbeginning to be diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's. The degranulationprocess of live brain cells when exposed to cell phone radiation has beenexperimentally demonstrated. Cancer incidence is also significantlyhigher within 400 meters of a cell phone tower or transmitter site. TrentUniversity researcher Magda Havas may now have discovered a third type ofdiabetes caused exclusively by electromagnetic radiation.
The most vulnerable are children, pregnant women, human brains ingeneral, testicles, and ovaries. This was confirmed in 2007 by the WorldHealth Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancerand in 2010 by a Swedish government study, all showing that cell phoneuse increases the chances of brain cancer by 40%. Last year, the EuropeanJournal of Oncology reported that serious heart and related problems(e.g. arrhythmia, palpitations, heart flutter, racing heart beat,fainting, profuse sweating etc) can occur to pulsed radiation as low as0.5% of the existing Canadian and US federal guidelines which permit 10mill micro/Wm2. The truly science-based exposure guidelines demonstratethat nobody should be exposed to more than 1 microW/m2.
When it comes to any type of death industry, the most reliableinformation comes from the military. On the websitewww.safeschool.ca you can download a recently declassified US Navy document from1971 whichsummarizes the more than 2,300 studies on the health effects frommicrowave radiation known way back then! Of course they knew – microwavetechnology was already part of the military arsenal intended to inflictbodily harm. It is the Military University in Germany that developed EMFprotection standards for civilian building codes. In addition to people,building materials require protection from rapid corrosion caused byradiofrequencies and microwaves. In 2008, the Federation of CanadianMunicipalities asked the federal government for an emergency fund of $123 billion over 5 years to avoid building collapse.
The financial problems caused by this irresponsible application ofradiation-based technology includes agriculture and cows. Plants avoidhigh EMF levels by not growing as high as they normally would; when theEMF source is removed, they grow normally. As reported by Dr. Milham,when the "dirty electricity" was neutralized by Graham/Stetzerplugs in a U.S. school, "a dairy farmer a quarter of a mile awaynoticed that his cows each gave an average of ten pounds more milk perday, beginning the day the school received its filters. The cowswere responding to dirty electricity being removed from the groundcurrents." In 2008 the French court ordered a power company tocompensate cattle farmers for EMF damage.
A thoroughly depressing fact is that the main reason gorillas in Africawere reduced in numbers by 90% over the past two decades is because theirhabitat was destroyed by miners for a rare mineral called coltan. Thismineral is apparently indispensable to the production of cell phones. Theinternational efforts to save the gorillas is appearing to have somesuccess, but nothing has happened so far, it seems to rescue the minersthemselves – they are primarily children even as young as 6 years.
Living creatures are electrical beings able to function only withinspecific frequencies. Devra Davis observes: "The difference betweenbeing alive and being dead is just one thing – the presence of electricalactivity in the brain." Thoracic surgeon Dr. William Rae, theco- founder of the American Academy for Environmental Medicine with LinusPauling and Dr. Thoren Randolph, became originally interested inenvironmental influences on health when he himself became seriouslyEMF-sensitive in the 1970's from operating room equipment. His researchled him to recognize the deleterious influence of pesticides and manyother environmental toxins, all of which cause multi-system damage. Theimmune system is the primary target which does its job throughelectrically charged biological substances such as neurotransmitters,hormones, and peptides which transmit faster than the speed of light. Ithas been known since the 1990's that environmental illness frombiological toxins and electrohypersensitivity share the process of adisastrous reduction in the nervous system enzyme cholinesterase. It'ssudden depletion cause depression and also suicidal behavior.
All these biological processes have their inherent timing, repair anddefensive responses, especially during pregnancy and brain development.Hence, the industry "safety" standards, with which governmentregulators collaborate, are totally absurd. Devra Davis explains: Theyare based on the imaginary SAM, the Standard Anthropomorphic Man based onmilitary recruits of 1989: six foot two tall, about 200 lbs, and neverexposed to a cell phone. The subsequently constructed safetystandards date to 1962 when nobody knew the difference betweenheat-producing radiation and microwave radiation, and cell phones did notexist.
The Safe School Committee in Collingwood(www.safeschool.ca) is fighting the WiFi craze that has hit Canadianschools. Even though WiFi is slower than landline-transmittedconnections, and even though there is a documented 40% increase incardiac arrest in children under 13 years directly related to this typeof radiation, the Toronto School Board is hell-bent on WiFi for allschools – presumably until no brains are left to zap. So eager are ourguardians of education to implement what they call "Vision ofHope" (abysmally black humor unintended), they even exceed thetotally inappropriate safety standards set by Health Canada – standardsthat date from a time when wireless phones were Dick Tracey-type sci-fiwatches.
Ken Dryden expressed outrage on March 12 (Globe & Mail) about thelack of mandatory protection from head injuries in hockey, stating:"How could we be so stupid!" Such outrage applies to WiFi inschools even more because even more children – all of them in fact – willbe affected. In a 2009 review of the usually irreversible harm EMFscause, neuroscientists O. Johansson of the Karalinska Institute inSweden, wrote: "Today no-one would consider having a radio-activewrist watch with glowing digits (as you could in the 1950s), having yourchildren's shoes fitted in a strong X-ray machine (as you could in the1940s), keeping radium in open trays on your desk (as scientists could inthe 1930s), or X-raying each other at your garden party (as physiciansdid in the 1920s). In retrospect that was just plain madness. However, the persons doing so were not …less intelligent. … knowledge wasdeficient, as was a competent risk analysis coupled to a parallelanalysis of public needs."
What is happening in other jurisdictions? In 2007, Germany initiate apolicy of reducing the use of CAT scans because of their demonstratedcancer-causing properties, and because their use increased health carecosts (directly and through additional cancer incidence) by 80% in 40years. It followed logically that last year Germany banned the energyefficient CFLS light bulbs because their carcinogenic radiation exceedsEuropean exposure limits. (I tossed all ours and put old-fashionedincandescent bulbs back; I found that the crushing fatigue I thought wasaging mysteriously disappeared!) Many jurisdictions in the US arenow framing legislation to deal both with the bulb's unacceptable levelsof radiation and the difficulty of their disposal because of the highmercury content threatening the ground water.
The European Union's September 2009 report on EMFs stressed the"serious and irreversible damage to health and environments"from EMF radiation and called on all member states to take precautionaryaction. Shortly afterwards the possibility of outlawing the use of cellphones for children under 18 was discussed in the EU parliament.
The UK, whose national Department of Health is as industry-friendly andscience-challenged as our Health Canada, started to surrender to realityand on March 11 advised its citizens that they should text, rather thanput their cell phones to their ears.
Switzerland, Finland, Luxemburg, and Austria supply their schools withthe totally radiation-safe fiber-optic technology for their internet andcommunication needs. Israel has similar legislation in the works. Thosecountries also set the maximum level of exposure between 5 to 10microW/cm2. Recall: In Canada we are told 1,000 microW/cm2 is"safe". Guess on which part of the Earth human brains willsurvive!
Meanwhile, we are also being threatened with "smart meters"which tend to increase electricity costs for people and expose them tomassive amounts of radiation. As of February of this year, Californiaallows people to refuse their installation, because a formalinvestigation showed that these US-made devices never passed all themandatory regulatory hurdles, are hazardous to health, and can causefire.
Devra Davis in her superb book "Disconnect" explains how themost serous practical challenge to this industry comes from the world'slarge insurance companies, such as the Sterling Group of Lloyd's ofLondon. Having nearly been nearly wiped out when the asbestos-relatedclaims became undeniable in the early 1990s, the cell-phone industry wasinformed they would not be backed when radiation hits the fan, as itmust. The trigger for this decision was the UK's 2005 Stewart Commissionwhose chair, citing worldwide research demonstrating harm tochildren's brains from cell phones, told the mobile phone industry to"refrain from promoting the use of mobile phones bychildren". In Canada, liability is certainly worth testing incourt, because the 2007 Human Rights Commission report on EnvironmentalIllness specifically included harm from EMF radiation as being real andrequiring accommodation.

A hate crime happened a few weeks ago in Fernley , Nevada that is just becoming known to the wider public. A family has lost its car, is bankrupt and cannot return to their home because of it.
You should know about it. When you do, you will want to take action. At the end, there is a change.org petition, information for press contacts, and a Facebook Page where you can find more information and express your solidarity. Please leave any other ideas you may have in the comments.
It all happened when Johnny, Lisa and Alyssa Bonty, and their son-in-law, all from the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, stopped at the Quick Stop to get some gas in Fernley NV on May 24th. The rest is below the fold.
According to Indian Country Today, this is what happened:
The Attack
Johnny Bonta got out of the car to pump some gas when a carload full of skinheads pulled up alongside him. One of them got out of the car with a baseball bat and tried to pick a fight. Johnny told him he didn’t want to fight and got back into the car. The family then drove off, with his son-in-law, Shane Murray, behind the wheel. But now the skinheads were in pursuit.
As the Bonta family was heading for the freeway ramp, the skinheads cut them off and jammed on the brakes, causing a crash. The three skinheads then all got out of their car with baseball bats, knives and a crowbar and attacked the family.
Here’s how Lisa Bonfa described the vicious assault that followed:
“They all jumped out of the car with baseball bats, knives and a crowbar, and we knew they were going to hurt us,” said Lisa Bonta, in an interview from Washoe Medical Center, where she was in treatment for seizures she suffers….snip…[even though this happened at 1pm, nobody passing by would stop to help them]…
“I saw one of them hit my husband in the head with a bat, and the other one was trying to cut off his braid with a knife. Johnny was covered in blood and they just kept hitting him with a crow bar. They even tried to slit his throat,” she added.
“Jacob Cassell had my son-in-law on the ground in a chokehold and Shane was turning blue. My daughter was sobbing ‘they’re killing him’ and somehow she found the strength to hit Jacob in self-defense so he would release Shane.”
It was then, Lisa said, that Cassell turned his anger on her and her daughter, jumping on the hood of their car while swinging a baseball bat and cursing at them.
“I’m a 46 year-old woman with serious health problems, and I tried to defend myself, but he hit me across the lower back with his bat, calling us ‘niggers and river monsters,” said Lisa, who is Anglo. “He pointed at Alyssa and said he would rape her the next time he saw her in Fernley, where she lives.”
Johnny was knocked out by the bat, which had broken his nose and sinus cavities.
Turns out that Jacob Caswell’s father is a police officer in town, and after they tired of assaulting the family, Caswell taunted them with that fact:
“You hear those cops coming? They’re not going to help you. My daddy is a cop in this town, and nothing is going to happen to me. You fucking niggers are going to jail.”
The Police Response
And sure enough, the police arrive and they DON’T TAKE ANY STATEMENTS FROM THE VICTIMS, JUST THE SKINHEADS!!!! They completely ignored the family until Lisa suffered a seizure.
This despite the fact that Johnny had a broken nose, nasal cavity, and could barely stand from being hit with the bat. Shane had a crushed elbow and a broken hand, among other things.
Three ambulances responded arrived on the scene and took Lisa, Murray and Alyssa for medical treatment. Lisa assumed Johnny had been taken in another ambulance, but he had not.Johnny was taken to jail and received NO medical attention for SIX days!!!!!!!
“Why?” you ask?
First they told Lisa that he had an outstanding $367 fine.
When the family arranged to pay it, they charged Johnny with battery with a deadly weapon, even though he had NO weapon.
The police wouldn’t even let in an IHS doctor to treat Johnny in the jail. He only got medical attention after tribal police pursued his release, six days later.
The family also lost its car in all of this, and the police would NOT help them locate it, even though they were the ones who towed it. TWO WEEKS later they finally found it in a small impoundment yard, with its tires flat.
The family cannot afford to get the car out since Johnny was out of work due to his injuries. Family members now are walking to their doctors’ appointments.
The Brag on Facebook
These morons always have to brag. They incriminate themselves, that is if anyone’s listening (or, in this case, reading):
Two hours after attacking the Bontas, Josh Janiszewski of Fernley wrote, “Just laid the fists and boots to some 6′ 5” tongan dude. what you got on little guys?” at 3:13 p.m. When asked if they gave them hell, Josh responded. “Oh we did. That’s for sure!” at 3:48 p.m. “Amen,” said Jacob Cassell at 4:07 p.m.Jacob’s mother Dee Cassell also commented, “So…who has blood? You guys need to come home to mom?” at 4:48 p.m. She later added that she gave them First Aid. “Better have ur asses at home after I did 1st aid. Don’t piss off women – they r worse than men!” she wrote at 8:00 p.m.
When asked if they got “some good licks” in, Josh said, “sent em to the hospital, they got fucked up man, thats for sure.”
The Pattern
Since this crime occurred, the family has found out that skinheads have attacked other Native American families in nearby towns as well, but nobody reports the crimes because they feel the police won’t help them. AND THEY’RE RIGHT!!!!!
FBI Investigation
I was relieved to learn at the end of the article that the FBI is investigating this as a hate crime, and has taken statements from the family. The Justice Department should also be investigating the Fernley police department as well, but the article doesn’t provide any information on that.
The family has contacted the ACLU and is trying to get a lawyer through them.

UPDATE (Monday): Credit where credit is due. Brenda Norrell at Censored News, was the first one to cover this. We find out in that article that the attackers also attempted to slit Bonta’s throat, which is attempted murder. Brenda also reported on the complicity of the Reno Gazette Journal, which copied police tactics of NOT INTERVIEWING THE VICTIMS!!!! (one thing you may want to do is write a complaint to the editor – just go to the link), and wrote about the Facebook bragging. You can also listen to an interview Brenda did with Lisa over at Blogtalk Radio.
Tiokasin Ghosthorse also interviewed the family live on First Voices Indigenous Radio, broadcast over WBAI Thursdays at 9am EST, on July 9. The archives from that interview aren’t on the website yet, but I’m expecting them to be.

3. There’s also a Facebook page aimed at Burning Man attendees – apparently Fernley is on the way to BM festivities, and people are pledging not to spend money there. Interesting action. Like it.

I also wanted to add that this kind of virulent racism and violent behavior goes on around reservations throughout the country, not just the southwest. I sat in on a tribal council meeting on the Standing Rock Reservation two summers ago, and was simply aghast at a group of former-UND students testifying about why they had dropped out. Tensions had been especially high during the mascot controversy (fueled by a racist donor who had given money for a sports arena only on condition that the name Fighting Sioux be retained) but it was common for the Lakota kids to be called “Prairie Niggers” (nope, no typos, that’s what I wrote) and otherwise be harassed. Sometimes things like eggs would be thrown at them. This story should be part of a larger expose of the racist behavior of people around the reservations in this country. Prior to getting involved with these issues, I just was not aware at all how sickeningly bad it is.

The Environmental Protection Division is allowing the ITT Rayonier Corporation to Pollute the Altamaha River
And the problem continues
Our River, its communities, and citizens need action now to stop the pollution.
