POLISH DEATH PROBED – ATTEMPT ON MOHAWK IGNORED MNN
POLISH DEATH PROBED – ATTEMPT ON MOHAWK IGNORED
MNN. Oct. 29, 2009. On October 14th 2007, Polish immigrant, Robert Dziekanski, was killed by the RCMP at the customs venue in Vancouver Airport. He was tasered, knocked down and hit again. He screamed in pain on the floor. They fired again, again and again until he died.
Dziekanski had come from Poland to visit his mother, who had been waiting for him at the arrivals level for 7 hours.
A bystander video taped his death with his cell phone. The RCMP were all buffed up with body armor, hand guns, pepper spray and collapsible batons. They said they feared for their safety when he picked up the stapler and waved it at them.
The state is spending millions on an highly publicized investigation into his death.
What’s the difference between this and the attack on Kahentinetha Horn at the Akwesasne border on June 14, 2009? The CBSA Canadian Border Services Agency video taped this vicious assault which they hide for reasons of National Security. Many witnesses have signed affidavits.
Horn was pulled over by the border guards to wait for hours. CBSA and a squad of heavily equipped commandos appeared. They surrounded her car, grabbed her and used stress tactics that brought on a heart attack. The border guards tried to push her to bend forward so the blood would rush into her heart and kill her. She survived.
This attack has been kept out of mainstream news. Every request to the RCMP, OPP and Attorney General of Canada to investigate this crime has been stopped.
Canada does not want a review of their agents torturing and trying to kill a 69 year old woman who was peacefully crossing the border at Akwesasne.
Horn went to the Federal Court of Canada to file an action to investigate this crime. FCC issued an order that she must pay for all of the Crown’s costs starting with a $20,000 deposit. They declared she lives in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake and therefore is not a resident of Canada. This is an admission that we are sovereign.
Many have been brutalized at this border. The colonial Akwesasne Mohawk Council is hiring a high profile lawyer, paid by Canada, to mount a class action suit against Canada, mainly to avoid the sovereignty, international border and land issues. Indigenous victims will be urged to take a settlement. The deal will probably try to absolve Canada of guilt and responsibility in the eyes of their law.
Canada knows this is an international nation-to-nation issue. The lawyer will say the ruling is a great victory for the Indigenous, blah, blah, blah. Canada will keep pretending they are in control of their Indians.
The foreigners need guns to assert their illegitimate authority.
In Akwesasne we are in our homes, doing nothing wrong. When some antagonistic armed border goon confronts us, our guard goes up. An issue is created and we could be killed. Armed camps are being created around us to force us to defend ourselves against their brutality and weapons. Since they have guns, shouldn’t we have guns to defend ourselves from them?
Any law abiding peaceful and compliant individual, black, white, yellow or brown, who shows up at the border is confronted with tasers and guns. They can become a victim, attacked and killed. Because it’s at the border the goons think they can walk away scot free with no fear of retaliation.
Is Canada at war with us? Why are they pointing us at us? The corporations, Wall Street, bankers, military and lawyers now control governments. Anyone asserting self-determination and sovereignty or questioning their lack of jurisdiction in a resource rich territory is considered an enemy. We have been declared terrorists or enemy combatants and denied civil, sovereign and human rights.
Dziekanski was a visitor with more rights to an investigation than us. He was killed to desensitize the public to what state agents will do to enforce their will. The RCMP took 7 hours to plan his killing and to work up the nerve to do it. In the Horn case, they spent over an hour and botched it.

NOTE: Charges could not be brought against the CBSA border guards unless the victims paid the crown’s court costs. Elder's Meditation of the Day - July 18
"Our fathers gave us many laws which they had learned from their fathers. These laws were good."--Chief Joseph, NEZ PERCE
The Creator gives us many laws to live by. These are different than the laws of man. The laws of the Creator are designed for us to live in harmony and balance with ourselves and each other. These laws are about having freedom and happiness. Our Elders teach us these laws. Laws about how to treat each other, laws about how to treat and respect our Mother Earth, laws about the environment.
Oh Great Spirit, teach me the laws of the unseen world. Today I pray You open my eyes so I can better see the Red Road.

Suspects Arrested in Murder of Venezuelan Indigenous, but Chief’s Detention Fuels Conflict
Suspects Arrested in Murder of Venezuelan Indigenous, but Chief’s Detention Fuels Conflict Suspects Arrested in Murder of Venezuelan Indigenous, but Chief’s Detention Fuels Conflict
http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/news/4904
Published on October 30th 2009, by James Suggett Mérida, October 30th 2009 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – Last week, Venezuelan officials arrested seven suspects in the deadly October 13thattack on an indigenous Yukpa community. However, the investigation was tainted with the arbitrary detention one of the victims, Yukpa Chief Sabino Romero, prompting indigenous rights activists to accuse the government of not fulfilling indigenous rights laws.Those arrested for the attack, which left two dead and four injured and took place in the Sierra de Perija region on the border with Colombia, were Yukpa men who were named in testimonies by the victims and witnesses.In a press conference, Minister for Justice and Internal Affairs Tarek El-Aissami said the attack was an internal conflict among the Yukpa over stolen cattle. He denied it was related to the controversy over the granting of land titles to the Yukpa, which culminated on October 12th when the government granted more than 40,000 hectares of land to several Yukpa communities.The controversy ended with the land grants, and “the Yukpa people are more united than ever,” El-Aissami said during a nationally televised press conference. He was accompanied by several Yukpa chiefs and community members as well as Indigenous Affairs Minister Nicia Maldonado.“For 500 years, they were excluded and denied all rights, and today thanks to the Bolivarian Revolution of President [Hugo] Chavez, we have included them,” said the minister.However, according to the testimony of Chief Romero, who was hospitalized with three bullet wounds, the attack was a direct result of ongoing divisions among the Yukpa over whether to accept the government’s land offer.Instead of granting a united block of ancestral lands as the Yukpa originally proposed, the government reduced the overall amount of land by 90,000 hectares and granted the land in scattered parcels that are interspersed with large cattle ranching estates and concessions to multi-national coal mining companies, according to Romero and his supporters.Romero denied the accusation that he had stolen cattle and thus provoked the attack on his community. He said this accusation was made by supporters of the government’s land demarcation plan, including the local cattle rancher’s association, the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, and several Yukpa communities, but the real motive was to retaliate against him for his opposition to the government’s plan. “I know that this problem has come because of the land demarcation. They want to kick us out; now we feel that the cattle ranchers and the government’s commission for land demarcation want to kick us off these lands,” said the Yukpa leader in a testimony recorded at the public hospital in Maracaibo.While Romero and three other injured Yukpa were in the public hospital, National Guard troops arbitrarily transferred them to a military hospital against their will. There, a state court brought charges against Romero for robbery and homicide, and the national investigative police, the CICPC, isolated and interrogated him about the events surrounding the attack on his community.Military officials said their detention and transfer of Romero was a measure to protect him and his community from further harm. However, Romero’s defense lawyer, Ricardo Colmenares, said Romero’s right to due process was violated and that the charges are a baseless attempt to intimidate and persecute the Yukpa chief.The state also brought charges of drug trafficking against one of the principle leaders of the national solidarity movement with the Yukpa, Lusbi Portillo. Portillo is a professor of anthropology in Maracaibo who has worked for a quarter of a century to defend the Sierra de Perija region from coal mining and to help the indigenous communities recuperate their ancestral lands. He is treated with high regard and trusted by many indigenous communities in the region.Meanwhile, Indigenous Affairs Minister Nicia Maldonado maintained her alliance with the Yukpa leaders who support the government’s land demarcation plan and did not come to Romero’s aid. She continued to accuse Romero of stealing cattle, and she accused Portillo of being a counter-revolutionary seeking to sabotage Venezuela’s revolutionary process.Campaign for Land Demarcation ContinuesActivists from the Culture Ministry, the ideological formation branch of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, the national student loan program Fundayacucho, the Bolivarian University of Venezuela, the Landless Movement (MST) of Brazil, alternative community media collectives, peasant organizations, and NGOs continue to denounce Romero’s treatment at the hands of authorities.In support of Romero and his Yukpa allies, they also demand that the October 12th land grants be revoked so that a new process of land demarcation can be carried out with more direct participation by indigenous authorities and in accordance with indigenous legal customs, as the law mandates.They say the government must fully compensate the private landowners whose lands will be demarcated for the Yukpa, and revoke all mining concessions on Yukpa lands. Also, they recommend that the top government officials involved in the land demarcation process so far be removed from their posts for violating indigenous rights. The election of President Chavez in 1998 brought much hope for progress on indigenous rights. In 1999, a new constitution approved by popular referendum brought unprecedented guarantees for indigenous communities, and the National Assembly passed landmark laws in 2001 and 2005 requiring the government to demarcate ancestral indigenous lands and grant indigenous communities a certain degree of autonomy, among other things.In May 2007, Chavez announced the suspension of new mining concessions in the Sierra de Perija, but he has yet to revoke the concessions. In August 2008, Chavez pronounced his administration decisively in favor of Yukpa land demarcation, and ordered his ministers to get the job done.

Oh, God no
Oh, God no
Lieberman is a suck up snake, who will turn on anyone if it suits his weasel, slimy, back stabbing needs. Kick him off all leadership any way.
Dave
Joe Lieberman says "Oh, God no" to losing his committee chairmanship if he blocks health care reform.
Join us in saying: "Hell yeah!"
Can you forward this email to friends and ask them to join you in signing our petition asking Democratic senators to hold Lieberman accountable?
Then, share on Facebook and Twitter.
Dave,
You may have heard the news. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) is threatening to help Republicans block a vote on health care reform if the bill includes a public health insurance option.
But when reporters asked Lieberman if he'd be willing to lose his powerful committee chairmanship as a consequence, he said: "Oh, God no."
What's our answer? Hell yeah!
You and 90,000 others signed our petition to Democratic senators asking them to strip leadership titles from Lieberman (or others) if they block reform. Can you help us get to 100,000?
Please forward this email to your friends. Ask them to sign our petition to Democratic senators by clicking here.

Are we going to let Joe Lieberman screw up health care reform? Hell no! Sign the petition to hold him accountable --> http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=9f3J3PY5IqDtc0iN6KN0dheLI1NlVXk1
We'll deliver this petition to Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), among others. After Lieberman endorsed John McCain for president, and Democrats let Lieberman keep his chairmanship, Bayh said:
"If he does retain his chairmanship, we still exert oversight over him... He doesn't have the ability to just do whatever he wants. The caucus still has the right to remove him from that position at any time..."
Now's the time for Democratic senators like Bayh to let Lieberman know they'll make good on that promise. Lieberman needs to be held accountable.
Please forward this email to friends -- and share on Facebook and Twitter -- so we can deliver 100,000 signatures to Democratic senators!
Thanks for being a bold progressive.

NetPosse.com IDAHO Alert TX: Bay Thoroughbred Mare Missing in Johnson County - April 15, 2000
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More info:
http://www.netposse.com/stolenmissing/PrincessArielTXmissingApr00.html
Princess Ariel was purchased at auction in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was advertised with a FREE breeding and so she went back to Texas with the Sellers.
From owner Rebecca: After about three months I realized that I was getting the run around so I sent them a check to cover mare care, and I hired a transport to collect her. I informed the previous owners of the pick up date and they agreed. On that date the transport called me to inform me that they were not home and they could no longer wait. I called and called them to no avail. That following Monday the breeder called me at work and told me he would bring her to me. He never did so, and I could not get them to respond to my phone calls or letters. I have been searching for her ever since.
It is believed this mare has been re-sold and registered under a new owner. Rebecca has papers proving her legal ownership. Please help her find her mare!
Tribal Council puts leader of Navajo Nation on suspension
Tribal Council puts leader of Navajo Nation on suspension
by Dennis Wagner - Oct. 27, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. was placed on administrative leave Monday by the Tribal Council, escalating a power struggle on America's largest Native American reservation.
Shirley, who has promoted a December ballot measure that would dramatically reduce the number of council members, said he has no idea why he was removed. Six top members of Shirley's executive staff also were referred for investigation.
Last week, the council received two independent reports concerning Shirley's dealings with contractors who provide satellite and wireless services to the tribe, and a third report about a loan agreement. Joshua Lavar Butler, communications director for the Tribal Council, said Shirley received summaries but was not advised of specific allegations.
"There's no presumption of innocence. There's a presumption of guilt," said George Hardeen, a spokesman for Shirley. "Nobody has said that he's done anything criminal. The worst that I've heard is that he's accused of an ethics violation."
Navajo Attorney General Louis Denetsosie has been directed to consider hiring a special prosecutor to look into possible ethical, civil and criminal charges, Butler said. He has 60 days to decide.
Last week, Hardeen said, the council rejected a resolution to fire the attorney general because he refused to hire a special prosecutor in 2004 to investigate other allegations against Shirley.
The Navajo Nation covers portions of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah and has a population estimated at 250,000. Shirley, 61, took office in 2003.
The council voted 48-22 to transfer Shirley's duties to Vice President Ben Shelly. A news release issued by Butler said Shirley was suspended in part to prevent him from "obstructing or otherwise interfering with the investigation and possible prosecution."
Hardeen said he believes the suspension was politically motivated; Shirley has promoted two December ballot measures that would dilute the Tribal Council's power. One initiative would reduce the Council size from 88 members to 24. The other would give the Navajo president line-item veto authority.
Butler said the investigations had been in the works for several years.
Mountaintop Removal Begins on Coal River Mountain -- Help Needed Now
Mountaintop Removal Begins on Coal River Mountain -- Help Needed Now
By Matt Wasson - Oct. 24, 2009
BREAKING NEWS: Reports are coming in from residents of West Virginia's Coal River Valley that Massey Energy has begun mountaintop removal mining operations on Coal River Mountain. Sprawling across thousands of acres of diverse and pristine hardwood forests, this mountain is home to the tallest peaks ever permitted for destruction in the state of West Virginia. The mountain also became a powerful symbol of hope for a better future in the Appalachian coalfields after a study showed those peaks and ridges have wind resources as high as "Class 7," which is the highest rating on the scale.
Local residents have rallied around a proposal for a 328 Megawatt wind farm and put up a website, coalriverwind.org, to promote their vision. The wind farm would, over the course of a few decades, provide far more jobs in the community than those created during the few years it would take Massey Energy to reduce the mountain to a flat, barren, and toxic wasteland. Just a few days ago, the AP reported that a local organization, Coal River Mountain Watch, has been working with Google Earth to design a presentation that will be shown at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, contrasting the proposed wind farm with Massey Energy's plans for more than 6,000 acres of mountaintop removal coal mining on the mountain.
A 328 Megawatt wind farm versus a 6,000 acre mountaintop removal coal mine -- there could be no better symbol of the crossroads we are at in America's energy future. Whichever way it goes, the fate of Coal River Mountain is America's energy future. If the coal companies can mine Coal River Mountain, they can do anything they want. If they can destroy these peaks, we'll know exactly what the effect that the billions in tax-payer giveaways to the coal industry will have if the climate bill is passed.
What's at stake
There's far more than just a wind farm at stake when it comes to the destruction of Coal River Mountain, however, both for residents of the Coal River Valley and for people across the country who believe that a clean energy future is within our grasp.
For local residents, this is the last intact mountain in the vicinity, home to some of the few remaining headwater streams that have not been polluted with heavy metal-laden mine waste. If Massey Energy's plans aren't stopped, they know exactly what's in store - just a few weeks ago, a local Eyewitness News story about 200 families in the town of Prenter who are suing 9 coal companies for contaminating their well water with coal waste began as follows:
"Twenty-two year old Josh McCormick is dying of kidney cancer. Twenty-six year old Tanya Trale has had a tumor removed from her breast; her husband has had two tumors removed from his side and both have had their gallbladders taken out. Rita Lambert has had her gallbladder removed; so has her husband and both parents. Jennifer Massey has a mouthful of crowns and so does her son after their enamel was eaten away, and six of her neighbors - all unrelated - have had brain tumors, including her 29-year old brother, who died. Bill Arden is one of those neighbors. He survived his brain tumor, but Arden's eight-year old boxer named Sampson did not. What do all of these people have in common? They all live within a 3-mile radius of Prenter Hollow in Boone County, West Virginia. And all have well water."
As usual, despite overwhelming evidence that it's the sludge they have been pumping into underground mine shafts that contaminated the groundwater, the coal companies deny any connection to the problem.
On Coal River Mountain, less than 100 yards from where the mining has begun, lies the Brushy Fork coal slurry impoundment, a massive earthen dam holding back 8.2 billion gallons of toxic coal sludge. Were that dam to fail, as several have done in the recent past, hundreds of lives could be lost in a matter of minutes and thousands would be put in jeopardy. Even short of complete dam failure, the risks to local communities are great. The ground beneath the impoundment is riddled with abandoned underground mine shafts, leaving many local residents with little doubt that some of that toxic slurry will end up in their groundwater as the foundation-shaking blasts of ammonium-nitrate explosives begin cracking rock strata and exposing aquifers to the contaminated water.
Outside the Coal River Valley and across the nation there is also a lot at stake -- especially for the millions of young people who turned out en masse during last November's election, believing they could take their country back from the powerful special interests that pulled the strings of government over the preceding eight years. Just this weekend, thousands of students are attending regional "Powershift" conferences, learning what they can do to bring about their vision of a new future and a new energy policy build around efficient use of clean and renewable energy technologies.
Those same young people who came out by the thousands chanting "Yes We Can!" last fall are soon going to learn whether that slogan applies to them, or really just to powerful corporations with a lot of money and political influence. Today, it's coal companies like Massey Energy that are claiming the "Yes We Can!" slogan:
"Yes we can destroy your mountains, drinking water, and dreams for a better future. Yes we can threaten and intimidate you at public hearings and drown out your voice. Yes We Can!"
Just last week, the same Administration that donned the mantle of "Hope" and "Change" held public hearings on the rubber-stamp permitting of mountaintop removal in which the Army Corps of Engineers allowed mobs ginned up by the coal companies to threaten, intimidate and drown out the voices of people brave enough to speak out against the destruction of their homes, communities and mountains.
But it's too soon for those young people to return to the feelings of disenfranchisement and cynicism that has characterized their age group for the past few decades. The Obama Administration has begun taking small steps to rein in mountaintop removal mining, and recently threatened to veto the largest mountaintop removal permit ever proposed in West Virginia. For even those baby-steps, they are facing a massive push-back from the coal industry. But its not nearly enough to make tweaks to the permiting process while letting mountaintop removal continue under the industry-friendly rules rigged by the Bush Administration. The Administration needs to hear from us - to hear from you.
It's time we demand the "change" we were promised, and Coal River Mountain, the most powerful symbol of the difference between the destructive and climate change-denying policies of the past and the promise of a new future, is the line in the sand. Coal River Mountain must be saved.
The Administration has been hearing a lot from the coal industry, but have they heard from you? If not, you can start by calling the White House and making your voice heard. Here's a link for more information: www.ilovemountains.org/coalriver/.
Next, sign up to for the e-mail list to stay informed and engaged in the campaign. It's not a scam, your e-mail address won't be traded or sold, so get over it and sign up - you can't stay engaged and make a difference if you don't stay informed. Here's the link.
And finally, tell a friend, recruit a co-worker, or post the news to a list or a blog.
The mission is clear; the stakes couldn't be higher; the fate of Coal River Mountain and our energy future are up to you. The time to act is now.
PINE RIDGE, S.D. -- The Oglala Delegation of the Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council, headed by Chief Oliver Red Cloud, reaffirmed the 1851 and 1868 Ft. Laramie Treaties by exerting their inherent rights and authority by issuing removal proceedings against their agency's BIA Superintendent Robert Ecoffey, Jr. for human, civil, and treaty rights violations against the Oglala Oyate (people).
Article I of the Treaty states, “… If bad men among the whites, or among other people subject to the authority of the United States, shall commit any wrong upon the person or property of the Indians, the United States will … proceed at once to cause the offender to be arrested and punished … and also re-imburse the injured person for the loss sustained … If bad men among the Indians shall commit a wrong or depredation upon the person or property of any one, white, black or Indian, the Indians will deliver the wrongdoer to the United States to be tried and punished …”
Upon issuing the order for Ecoffey to vacate his position as the Pine Ridge Superintendent, two tribal members occupied Ecoffey's office in the BIA for several hours. They released a statement that they would not leave the office until the Agency was shut down and a federal negotiator would be called in to hear the complaints from tribal members regarding Ecoffey's ineffectiveness as an Agent, especially several years of questionable trust land transfers and refusal to conduct a forensic land audit.
Wednesday's non-violent action stems from months of false promises made by Ecoffey to address numerous complaints brought by firefighters from the Pine Ridge Agency Fire Department who have sought to remove Fire Management Chief Daigre Douville, Mike Twiss, Harold Compton and others from the station for human and civil rights violations and a sexual assault charge.
In a pre-emptive move to appease the tribal membership, he made a 11th hour call to the Equal Employment Office in Washington, D.C., who sent a representative to Pine Ridge yesterday to take testimony on the sexual assault charge brought against fire station staff. The E.E.O. officer was on hand to witness the Treaty Council exert their custom law on Ecoffey and assured tribal members that he would return to D.C. and summons a special commissioner to come to Pine Ridge to address the peoples' concerns.
By late afternoon, Ecoffey had granted two-week paid administrative leave to Fire Chief Daigre Douville and Fire Technician Mike Twiss, pending the outcome of the E.E.O. investigation.
The Black Hills Treaty Council contends that their action is legal under custom laws as lineal descendants of the treaty signers. Therefore, the Pine Ridge Agency is currently without a Superintendent and any action Ecoffey attempts to takes will be considered illegal.
Yesterday's events are a result of the perpetual poverty and genocidal policies that the federal government imposes on the Tribe. The Treaty Council will re-convene on November 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Billy Mills Hall, Pine Ridge to update tribal members on their progress.
Contact Alex White Plume, Treaty Council spokesman, at 605-455-2534 605-455-2534 for additional comment.
"Michael Moore's Action Plan: 15 Things Every American Can Do Right Now"
You've Seen the Movie -- Now It's Time to ACT!
Thursday, October 22, 2009
Friends,
It's the #1 question I'm constantly asked after people see my movie: "OK -- so NOW what can I DO?!"
You want something to do? Well, you've come to the right place! 'Cause I got 15 things you and I can do right now to fight back and try to fix this very broken system.
Here they are:
FIVE THINGS WE DEMAND THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS DO IMMEDIATELY:
1. Declare a moratorium on all home evictions. Not one more family should be thrown out of their home. The banks must adjust their monthly mortgage payments to be in line with what people's homes are now truly worth -- and what they can afford. Also, it must be stated by law: If you lose your job, you cannot be tossed out of your home.
2. Congress must join the civilized world and expand Medicare For All Americans. A single, nonprofit source must run a universal health care system that covers everyone. Medical bills are now the #1 cause of bankruptcies and evictions in this country. Medicare For All will end this misery. The bill to make this happen is called H.R. 3200. You must call AND write your members of Congress and demand its passage, no compromises allowed.
3. Demand publicly-funded elections and a prohibition on elected officials leaving office and becoming lobbyists. Yes, those very members of Congress who solicit and receive millions of dollars from wealthy interests must vote to remove ALL money from our electoral and legislative process. Tell your members of Congress they must support campaign finance bill H.R.1826.
4. Each of the 50 states must create a state-owned public bank like they have in North Dakota. Then congress MUST reinstate all the strict pre-Reagan regulations on all commercial banks, investment firms, insurance companies -- and all the other industries that have been savaged by deregulation: Airlines, the food industry, pharmaceutical companies -- you name it. If a company's primary motive to exist is to make a profit, then it needs a set of stringent rules to live by -- and the first rule is "Do no harm." The second rule: The question must always be asked -- "Is this for the common good?" (Click here for some info about the state-owned Bank of North Dakota.)
5. Save this fragile planet and declare that all the energy resources above and beneath the ground are owned collectively by all of us. Just like they do it in Sarah Palin's socialist Alaska. We only have a few decades of oil left. The public must be the owners and landlords of the natural resources and energy that exists within our borders or we will descend further into corporate anarchy. And when it comes to burning fossil fuels to transport ourselves, we must cease using the internal combustion engine and instruct our auto/transportation companies to rehire our skilled workforce and build mass transit (clean buses, light rail, subways, bullet trains, etc.) and new cars that don't contribute to climate change. (For more on this, here's a proposal I wrote in December.) Demand that General Motors' de facto chairman, Barack Obama, issue a JFK man-on-the-moon-style challenge to turn our country into a nation of trains and buses and subways. For Pete's sake, people, we were the ones who invented (or perfected) these damn things in the first place!!
FIVE THINGS WE CAN DO TO MAKE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT LISTEN TO US:
1. Each of us must get into the daily habit of taking 5 minutes to make four brief calls: One to the President (202-456-1414), one to your Congressperson (202-224-3121) and one to each of your two Senators (202-224-3121). To find out who represents you, click here. Take just one minute on each of these calls to let them know how you expect them to vote on a particular issue. Let them know you will have no hesitation voting for a primary opponent -- or even a candidate from another party -- if they don't do our bidding. Trust me, they will listen. If you have another five minutes, click here to send them each an email. And if you really want to drop an anvil on them, send them a snail mail letter!
2. Take over your local Democratic Party. Remember how much fun you had with all those friends and neighbors working together to get Barack Obama elected? YOU DID THE IMPOSSIBLE. It's time to re-up! Get everyone back together and go to the monthly meeting of your town or county Democratic Party -- and become the majority that runs it! There will not be many in attendance and they will either be happy or in shock that you and the Obama Revolution have entered the room looking like you mean business. President Obama's agenda will never happen without mass grass roots action -- and he won't feel encouraged to do the right thing if no one has his back, whether it's to stand with him, or push him in the right direction. When you all become the local Democratic Party, send me a photo of the group and I'll post it on my website.
3. Recruit someone to run for office who can win in your local elections next year -- or, better yet, consider running for office yourself! You don't have to settle for the incumbent who always expects to win. You can be our next representative! Don't believe it can happen? Check out these examples of regular citizens who got elected: State Senator Deb Simpson, California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, Tempe, Arizona City Councilman Corey Woods, Wisconsin State Assemblyman Chris Danou, and Washington State Representative Larry Seaquist. The list goes on and on -- and you should be on it!
4. Show up. Picket the local branch of a big bank that took the bailout money. Hold vigils and marches. Consider civil disobedience. Those town hall meetings are open to you, too (and there's more of us than there are of them!). Make some noise, have some fun, get on the local news. Place "Capitalism Did This" signs on empty foreclosed homes, closed down businesses, crumbling schools and infrastructure. (You can download them from my website.)
5. Start your own media. You. Just you (or you and a couple friends). The mainstream media is owned by corporate America and, with few exceptions, it will never tell the whole truth -- so you have to do it! Start a blog! Start a website of real local news (here's an example: The Michigan Messenger). Tweet your friends and use Facebook to let them know what they need to do politically. The daily papers are dying. If you don't fill that void, who will?
FIVE THINGS WE SHOULD DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES UNTIL WE GET THROUGH THIS MESS:
1. Take your money out of your bank if it took bailout money and place it in a locally-owned bank or, preferably, a credit union.
2. Get rid of all your credit cards but one -- the kind where you have to pay up at the end of the month or you lose your card.
3. Do not invest in the stock market. If you have any extra cash, put it away in a savings account or, if you can, pay down on your mortgage so you can own your home as soon as possible. You can also buy very safe government savings bonds or T-bills. Or just buy your mother some flowers.
4. Unionize your workplace so that you and your coworkers have a say in how your business is run. Here's how to do it (more info here). Nothing is more American than democracy, and democracy shouldn't be checked at the door when you enter your workplace. Another way to Americanize your workplace is to turn your business into a worker-owned cooperative. You are not a wage slave. You are a free person, and you giving up eight hours of your life every day to someone else is to be properly compensated and respected.
5. Take care of yourself and your family. Sorry to go all Oprah on you, but she's right: Find a place of peace in your life and make the choice to be around people who are not full of negativity and cynicism. Look for those who nurture and love. Turn off the TV and the Blackberry and go for a 30-minute walk every day. Eat fruits and vegetables and cut down on anything that has sugar, high fructose corn syrup, white flour or too much sodium (salt) in it (and, as Michael Pollan says, "Eat (real) food, not too much, mostly plants"). Get seven hours of sleep each night and take the time to read a book a month. I know this sounds like I've turned into your grandma, but, dammit, take a good hard look at Granny -- she's fit, she's rested and she knows the names of both of her U.S. Senators without having to Google them. We might do well to listen to her. If we don't put our own "oxygen mask" on first (as they say on the airplane), we will be of no use to the rest of the nation in enacting any of this action plan!
I'm sure there are many other ideas you can come up with on how we can build this movement. Get creative. Think outside the politics-as-usual box. BE SUBVERSIVE! Think of that local action no one else has tried. Behave as if your life depended on it. Be bold! Try doing something with reckless abandon. It may just liberate you and your community and your nation.
And when you act, send me your stories, your photos and your video -- and be sure to post your ideas in the comments beneath this letter on my site so they can be shared with millions.
C'mon people -- we can do this! I expect nothing less of all of you, my true and trusted fellow travelers!
Yours,
Michael Moore
