The Senate is debating health reform and special interests and insurance companies are leaning on them hard. But reform priorities for older Americans aren't up for debate – and we're fighting to make sure the Senate gets the message.
That's why we've put together a national television ad with the American Medical Association to highlight the difference between the true advocates for older Americans who are working hard to protect Medicare and the special interests who are just out to scare people.
Click here to watch our latest ad – and tell your senators that reform must work for older Americans.

The People
In Canada we have a colonial system masked as a democracy. The conservatives work for Rockefeller, the Liberals for Rothschild and the NDP stand for the people. I attended the Ontario NDP provincial council last weekend in Toronto and I see that they are the only choice for the people in this system. All of their funding comes from the grassroots organization style and ultimately from the people. All of the Senators in Canada are appointed and they are responsible only to the bankers, not the people. The Senators are all Liberals or Conservatives.
I talked with many of the candidates and was able to present the Haldimand Proclamation, the map and the Women’s titleholder document about Lot 1 concession 11 Nottawasaga township in Simcoe County. They gave their support for the peaceful reclamation of this property and will do what they can to hold the “corporation” to it’s own words like “Truth and Reconciliation”.
As I was walking down Yonge, I witnessed a demonstration about the H1N1 vaccine program that the liberals and conservatives are behind. I realized the awakening here is accelerating, as the economy implodes and the bankers run with the money, covered by their cronies in Ottawa. The people are starting to see what is really going on and Canadians are taking to the streets to express themselves as they should in a “free” society.
Harper is making speeches about the “New World Order” in Europe ( www.youtube.com/thahoketoteh ) when Canada is not in a legal position to enter into any international agreements as they do not hold soverign rights to the land. All of the courts in this system are “Maritime Admiralty Law” or law of the sea. They can only deal with banks and corporations and they have turned all of the citizens into corporate entities through their “birth certificates” without their knowledge. The corporate court system has turned all of the people into slaves, as anyone who has been there can attest.
There is another system called law of the land. Kayanerakowa or council of the great peace, is Law of the Land here in Ontario. Law of the land is not a mind control system as are all “western democracies”, rather it is the law that you must listen to all sides on any issue before making up your mind. The power comes from the collective mind when unity is achieved.
Canada could be the spark for world peace if they adopt our constitution and become the seventh nation to join us, the world’s first united nations, we have a history. Together we could start the true path to peace and form a one world government based on “council of the great peace” or Kayanerakowa, the Law of this land.

Peace Vigil, Fasting and Prayer for Return of
Native American Remains for Reburial
November 30th to December 4, 2009
Buddhist nun, is fasting and praying in front of the Hearst Museum of Anthropology at U C Berkeley Nov. 30 to Dec. 4th. Her vigil calls attention to the bones of some 13,000 ancient burials removed from Shellmounds and other sites as development took over the Bay area. They are held by the Hearst Museum of Anthropology. Buried by the Ohlone and others in a sacred manner, the bones remain sacred and should be returned to Native American people. This vigil calls for recognition of the Ohlone Nation and return of the remains for proper reburial.
The vigil follows the fourth in a cycle of Sacred Site Shellmound Peace Walks organized by modern day Ohlone people and others. These walks have visited some of the 4 - 500 village sites that thrived around the San Francisco Bay for thousands of years before the devastation of the missions, ranchos, and modern development. The 2008 walk began at Glen Cove in Vallejo, where a sacred Shellmound site is currently at risk (http://www.vallejointertribalcouncil.org), and ended at the Emeryville Mall where a monument to consumerism replaces a monumental Ohlone Shellmound that was once 60 feet tall. Numerous remains from this site are held in the University collection.
The 5 day Prayer Vigil continues from 8 am to 5 pm, rain or shine. Please feel to join for a short or longer time or to sit in solidarity. And please make your views on ancestral remains known to U C Berkeley Chancellor Birgenau: chencellor [at] berkeley.edu 510-642-7464 or the Governor & Regents at.http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/contact.html

The Cherokee society is traditionally a matrilineal society. The women passed the clan to their children, and owned the property. It was the responsibility of her oldest brother to teach her children of Cherokee traditions and spirituality. The method of divorce was for the woman to pack up the man's clothing, and set it outside of the house.

The Flu Hits Fort Frontenac
November 22, 2009
Here at the Eagle Watch, we've been scratching around in the dirt of history like chickens looking for morsels of food. We're talking about 500 years of history that started with the colonial arrival and the lawless frenzy of the fur trade. The picture is complicated by so many different entities and alliances with their various and often conflicting political and economic agendas.
Already living and traveling on this part of Turtle Island were the various Indigenous nations like the Five Nations (Mohawk, Oneida, Onandaga, Cayuga and Seneca), the Hurons, the Neutrals, Eries, Petuns, Ojibwe (Mississauga), Algonquins, Nipissing when the Europeans, the Dutch, French and English arrived. All the New England colonies had different leaders who often fought with each other over land. The leaders changed frequently. Some had very expansionist goals while others, more conservative wanted to maintain the status quo of the moment. Then there were the Americans who wanted to break away from the English Crown. The Covenant Chain was a tangled web of intrigue and brutality.
Cultural differences and interpretations of treaties and agreements added to the confusion. Greed and fear made people drunken then as now. The colonialists arrived with plenty of both. Liars and crooks were everywhere, fomenting chaos. Over time, different versions of history have competed for supremacy. If history is written by kings and warmakers, where is the Truth? History is part of our cultural heritage, our identity and how we feel about ourselves, whether proud or ashamed or otherwise.
The picture needs sorting as the differences continue to this day. So does the colonial occupation which must end. Many questions are still unanswered or remain contentious. We invite your comments and citations as always.
A Bit of Local History
Fort Frontenac was first built by the French in 1673 in what is now downtown Kingston, Ontario at the mouth of the Cataraqui River, right where Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence River. Also known as Fort Cataraqui, it was a trading post and military post on a beautiful quiet bay, strategically positioned to control the fur trade to the west and access to Montreal to the east. Montreal, like Quebec City and Albany, was a major trade centre and a port.
Frontenac, then Governor of New France and a destitute count, was trying to control the Iroquois who controlled the fur trade in the area. He was in some talks there with the Five Nations while the fort was being built. An Iroquois village was nearby and a few French settlers were trying to till the chalky soil.
Frontenac put Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle in charge and then left. La Salle was an aggressive expansionist who provoked the Iroquois. He built a big ship, the Griffon so that he could control the Lake. The Iroquois knew what he was up to and so the ship disappeared. La Salle built a fort at the Niagara River between Lakes Erie and Ontario. The French were trying to get complete control of the waterways and thus the traffic in pelts and trade goods like copper kettles and guns. War was breaking out all over the place, often between Indigenous who were instigated by their European allies to fight against each other.
Joseph-Antoine Le Febvre de la Barre replaced Frontenac in 1682. He then set about making plans to destroy the Iroquois strength so that he could control the lucrative fur trade for his own gain. In 1684, he prepared to launch a military campaign from Fort Frontenac against the Onondagas.
According to Francis Jennings in "The Ambiguous Iroquois Empire":
"La Barre had hoped to awe the Iroquois by a show of great force. He assembled an army at Fort Frontenac/Cadaraqui of overwhelming size: 600 soldiers and 300 allied tribesmen, to be joined by another 600 Frenchmen and Indians from the west. For once, however, an epidemic served the Indians instead of Europeans. La Barre's troops were disabled by Spanish influenza, [same type as 1918 epidemic which did kill many Indigenous] and when he finally met the Onondagas with such troops as could still travel, the Iroquois knew that they had the upper hand. 31 La Barre heard his intended menace turned back on him by Onondaga speaker Garangula:
"'Hear, Yonnondio, I do not Sleep, I have my eyes open, and the Sun which enlightens me discovers to me a great Captain at the head of a a company of Soldiers, who speaks as if he were Dreaming. He says that he only came to the Lake to smoke on the great Calumet (pipe of peace) with the Onnondagas. But Garangula says, that he sees the Contrary, that it was to knock them on the head, if Sickness had not weakened the Arms of the French.
"'I see Yonnondio Raving in a Camp of sick men, whose lives the great Spirit has saved, by inflicting this Sickness on them. Hear Yonnondio, Our Women had taken their Clubs, our Children and Old Men had carried their Bows and Arrosw into the heart of your Camp, if our Warriors had not disarmed them, and retained them when your Messenger, Ohquesse appeared in our Castle.' 32
"La Barre accused: 'The Warriors of the Five Nations have conducted the English into the Lakes which belong to the King, my Master and brought the English among the Nations that are his Chldren.'
"Garangula retorted, 'We carried the English into our Lakes, to traffick there with the Utawawas and Quatoghies, as the Adirondacks brought the French to our Castles, to carry on a Trade which the English say is theirs. We are born free. We neither depend upon Yonnondio or Corlaer. We may go where we please and carry with us whom we please and buy and sell what we please. If your Allies be your Slaves, use them as such, Command them to receive no other but your people. This Belt Preserves my Words.' 34
With all the Frenchmen in bed, too sick and weak to fight the Iroquois, their show of force was a debacle. LaBarre was recalled to France by the King, Louis XIV. His replacement was the ex military, Denonville, a shrewd and cruel man.
The Marquis de Denonville was convinced that, "the Iroquois have no other design than to destroy all our allies, one after the other, in order finally to annihilate us." This thinking was his excuse to attack the Seneca people in 1687. He gave the order to systematically destroy the Seneca villages, scorching the land and burning thousands of bushels of corn.
This infuriated the Iroquois who fought back in 1688. They laid seige to Fort Frontenac for so long that many of the starving French inside died from scurvy. The following year, the Iroquois attacked the French community of La Chine, near Montreal, killing dozens. This incident has been inflated by racist historians who wanted to make the Iroquois look "savage". The French also destroyed Oneida and Mohawk villages, starving and killing far more people in their cold brutality. Cool and energetic, Denonville sounds like a "Ken Deane" gone wild in a land where he considers himself the only law.
Although Denonville then abandoned Fort Frontenac, the relentless onslaught of the colonial invasion/occupation continued up to this day. After Count Frontenac returned as Governor, he rebuilt the fort and continued some trade there. Then in 1758, many years later, the British took the fort from the French who subsequently sued for peace. The fort was abandoned and then rebuilt again. The English built Fort Henry across the bay. The city of Kingston grew up around and on top of the French fort. Today the site at Place D'Armes and Ontario Streets continues the military tradition, being part of Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College. The Kingston Army base is nearby on the east end of Kingston.
The Canadian military named some helicopters, "Griffons". Were they thinking of LaSalle's ship? The Griffon helicopters have their headquarters at Kingston 1 Wing but actually operate out of other bases including Petawawa on the Ottawa River and St. Hubert, Quebec. These helicopters are used in Afghanistan to carry Canadian soldiers so they can avoid the roadside bombers. (See endnotes for more on the Griffon.)
We tell you these things, not to rekindle old hostilities and stereotypes but because we need to look at this shared history and where it has led. If everyone has a turn telling the stories, then a truer picture can be painted. Maybe we can even put a stop to the endless warfare and senseless cruelty.
Who knows what will happen in the next 325 years. In 1684, how could the people on Lake Ontario at the St. Lawrence River have been able to imagine what it is like today? Tall buildings, big ships and planes, so much concrete everywhere and stinking air. And millions of people rushing around in cars, trains and planes. Maybe, three centuries from now, it will be much quieter and the air will have cleared. People will be watching and moving about, remembering our legacy.

The Griffons are used a lot in Afghanistan (Canadian Helicopter Force-Afghanistan - CHF-A) where they have moved "more than 16,000 personnel and more than 1,000,000 pounds of cargo". The Canadian military decided not to use this gun made by Dillon Aero Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona. They got something else instead.

_ _Upon hearing about the BLM’s plans for the large-scale removal of 2,500
horses in northwest Nevada near the Black Rock Desert, more than seven
thousand citizens submitted public comments to the BLM opposing the Calico
Mountain Complex Round Up, scheduled to begin on December 1, 2009. Public
comment has been extended through November 22, 2009 according to the BLM.
Currently more than 33,000 wild horses are stockpiled in government holding
facilities at a cost to taxpayers of $100,000 a day. The scheduled removal
of 2,500 from Nevada will bring that total to more than 35,000.
_“We already have enough wild horses in pens. Adding more horses to those
already held in confinement, when they are much safer on the range is
shortsighted, inhumane and fiscally irresponsible.”—_Ginger Kathrens, Emmy
Award Filmmaker & Volunteer Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation.
The BLM will pay the private contractor $610 per horse rounded up for an
estimated total of nearly $2 million for the Calico roundup alone according
to BLM spokesperson, Tom Gorey. Branding, vaccinating, sterilizing and
processing of horses to be placed in government holding will cost several
million more. The BLM hired the same contractor for the controversial
roundup of the famous stallion, Cloud, and his Pryor Mountain herd in
September, 2009. Bands including two-month-old foals were chased down off
the mountaintop by helicopter for 10-15 miles in more than 90 degree heat
resulting in trauma and [9]lameness.

The [11]1971 Act preserves wild horses and burros in over 300 areas of

too small to insure their long-term survival. The BLM's current policy of

Nov. 26th, 2009 is The 40th National Day of Mourning. WORLD WIDE
This Is Why We Must Fight All Our Public Schools To Teach The Truth To All Our Youth. . . Remind Your Children's Teachers AboutThe National Day of Mourning
Kids Reenact The First Thanksgiving With Smallpox Blankets And Whiskey (VIDEO)
How did the Pilgrims celebrate the first Thanksgiving? According to these adorable young history buffs, with blankets covered in smallpox. While it may appear that these kids are simply playing dress-up, their reenactment is pretty true-to-life, and includes hilarious depictions of The Pequot and King Philip's War. At the end, the Pilgrims give parting gifts to their Native American friends: whiskey, keys to a pickup truck, and of course, more smallpox.

40th National Day of Mourning
Nov. 26, 2009
12:00 noon
Coles Hill Plymouth, MA
United American Indians of New England
284 Amory St., Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
ORIENTATION FOR 2009 NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING
WHAT IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING?
An annual tradition since 1970, Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after Day of Mourning so that participants in DOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in political action. Over the years, participants in Day of Mourning have buried Plymouth Rock a number of times, boarded the Mayflower replica, and placed ku klux klan sheets on the statue of William Bradford, etc.
WHEN AND WHERE IS DAY OF MOURNING?
Thursday, November 26, 2009 (U.S. "thanksgiving" day) at Cole's Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole's Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area.
WILL THERE BE A MARCH?
There will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth has agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.
PROGRAM
Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to stand with us, it is a day when only Native people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers will be by invitation only. This year's NDOM is once again dedicated to our brother Leonard Peltier.
SOCIAL
We hope there will be a pot-luck social held after the National Day of Mourning speak-out and march this year. Please check back to the website to confirm. We anticipate that the hall may not be large enough to seat everyone at once. We may have to do two seatings. Preference for the first seating will be given to Elders, young children and their mother/caretaker, pregnant women, Disabled people, and people who have traveled a long distance to join National Day of Mourning. Please respect our culture and our wish to ensure that these guests will be the first to be able to sit and eat. With this understanding in mind, please bring non-alcoholic beverages, desserts, fresh fruit & vegetables, and pre-cooked items (turkeys, hams, stuffing, vegetables, casseroles, rice & beans, etc.) that can be easily re-warmed at the social hall prior to the social. Thank you.
TRANSPORTATION
Limited carpool transportation may be available from Boston. Contact the Boston International Action Center at (617) 522-6626. There is transportation from New York City via the International Action Center, for more information call 212-633-6646.
Directions: National Day of Mourning is held by the statue of Massasoit at Cole's Hill. Cole's Hill is the hill rising above Plymouth Rock on the Plymouth waterfront. If you need directions, use Water Street and Leyden Street in Plymouth, MA as your destination atmapquest.com. That will bring you to within a few hundred feet of Plymouth Rock and Cole's Hill. You can probably find a place to park down on Water Street.
Monetary donations are gratefully accepted. Please make checks payable to the Metacom Education Project and mail to Metacom Education Project/UAINE at 284 Amory Street, Boston, MA 02130.

People from the south got upset that this is a stereotype that ridicules their culture, demeans them as human beings and makes a lie of their traditions.
Sound familiar. it should. Next time you go to a Braves, Redskins or a local team that says "scalp the Indians" or they chant mock songs or wear animal skins that disgrace the animals in their drunken stupor or make mock peace pipes at these games remember this and take it to heart that your culture can be mocked also to make you look stupid and less than human.
Respect is more than a word. It's a way of life.

* Update from the Field
The first five days of Montana's buffalo hunt have so far been uneventful. We expect it will remain so until buffalo actually begin migrating into Montana.
The state and federal government agencies responsible for the Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP) met this week in Livingston, Montana. For the first time ever, Native American representatives were allowed a seat at the decision-making table. Nez Perce and Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal members as well as representatives from the Inter Tribal Bison Cooperative were finally able to engage in the decision-making process. This is precedent-setting and extremely good news for both the buffalo and the tribes and we hope the tribes will become deeply engaged in educating the agencies and helping the buffalo realize a better future.
If you were receiving last year's Updates, you might remember that the agencies promised, in their Adaptive Management Plan (AMP), to have greater tolerance for certain bison on certain lands outside of Yellowstone at certain times of the year. Despite the fact that these less than certain promises were never fully lived up to, the Department of Livestock (DOL) this week asked the other agencies to amend the AMP and prohibit any bison from occupying lands on the south side of the Madison River. In the words of the DOL, the changes agreed upon last year were "too lenient" on the bison and showed "too much tolerance." Revealing their ignorance of bison ecology, DOL representatives claimed there was "no habitat" on the south side of the Madison, an area with expansive meadows that BFC has observed to be a favorite of the bison during periods of each our our thirteen years in the field.
The DOL also complained that buffalo were "breaching" man-made zones and "threatening" cattle operations. But when asked for specifics on these cattle operations, livestock inspectors and even the Montana State Veterinarian were unable to specify more than one, and simply stated with a wave of the arm, "oh, there's a lot of them." The DOL's main complaint was that buffalo were too difficult to haze in the thick woods, and they simply don't want them on the landscape anyway.
In a surprising and heartening turn of events, Yellowstone Superintendent Suzanne Lewis and Gallatin National Forest Supervisor Mary Erickson expressed open disagreement with the livestock agency, and openly spoke against the DOL's requested changes. Lewis and Erickson pointed out that one year of data was insufficient to base such a drastic digression upon. They also reminded the DOL that there was no real risk of brucellosis transmission and that the buffalo need habitat outside the park.
After hours of circular sparring, the DOL's changes were rejected and the agencies will continue to allow a mere 30 buffalo to occupy Gallatin National Forest lands along the south side. Agency representatives also announced that bull bison would be allowed north of Duck Creek, where previously they have not been allowed. Last June three bull bison were captured and shipped to slaughter for grazing in this area, even though bulls pose no risk of brucellosis transmission. Perhaps angry at being rebuffed, the DOL insisted that if the buffalo inhabiting the south side "breached" more than twice, they would haze, capture, or slaughter them.
Regardless of the decisions made at this IBMP meeting, until the Plan is replaced with one more meaningful and respectful, the ultimate authority will rest with Montana's State Veterinarian and America's last wild bison will be at the mercy of the livestock industry. For now the DOL and partner agencies remain entrenched in the IBMP, and the DOL will make every attempt to keep Montana free of wild bison. Buffalo Field Campaign, with your support, will be here to defend the buffalo and their right to roam every step of the way.
ROAM FREE!

TAKE ACTION: Help the Buffalo with Your Comments to APHIS
More buffalo advocates have submitted comments to the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) about their Bovine Brucellosis Program, which maintains the status quo of harming wild bison and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Comments are being accepted through December 4, 2009, so if you haven't submitted yours yet please do so today. If you have, thank you, and please spread the word to save these herds! Click here to learn more and submit your comments today!

Buffalo Battle: BFC Will Be on TV's Planet Green!
Tune in on December 5, 2009 at 10pm EST to Discovery's Planet Green for Buffalo Battle, a new documentary-style TV program about the work of Buffalo Field Campaign. The one-hour program is expected to air in the United States and Europe. We will bring you more details as we learn them, but for now you can learn a little bit by visiting Planet Green.
While the link calls the program "Buffalo Warriors" look for "Buffalo Battle" on Planet Green December 5th!
Many thanks to Buffalo Battle's Executive Producer Matt Testa and his amazing crew at Authentic TV for being in the field with us, learning from all sides of the issue, and helping BFC tell the world about the last wild buffalo!
------------------------------
* Do You Like to Cook? BFC Needs You!
Buffalo Field Campaign is looking for cooks to prepare meals for volunteers during this campaign season. We're looking for people who can commit to at least two weeks, though a month would be preferred. BFC caters to all dietary needs, and meat is locally harvested. Please contact our kitchen coordinator, Brandy, for a more detailed description of the job at kitchen@buffalofieldcampaign.org.
------------------------------
* Buffalo Field Campaign Wish List
There are lots of ways for you to make a difference for wild buffalo. BFC's Wish List is one way to visualize the breadth of Buffalo Field Campaign's reach and capacity to support wild buffalo year-round. It's also a great way to match your interests with our day-to-day needs, prayers and wishes. Two things that we are in particular need of right now are tools our mechanic can use to maintain and repair our fleet of aging vehicles and frequent flier miles we can use to travel between Montana and Washington, DC.
Field Patrols form the backbone of BFC's efforts, allowing us to actively protect the bison on their native habitat, document every action taken against them, and share their compelling story with the world. Unfortunately, we are dependent upon vehicles to carry patrols to and from the field. We are incredibly blessed this season to have Dennis, a professional mechanic, as our mechanic coordinator. But in order for him to work at full capacity and keep our cars in working order, he needs some essential tools.
As important as field patrols are, they alone will not bring about the protection the bison need and deserve. The underlying policy must change. To this end, we are planning a series of trips to Washington, DC to educate and inform members of Congress and the Obama Administration on the importance of America's only continuously wild population of bison and the dire situation they face every time they attempt to follow their instinctual migration to winter and spring habitat. If you have frequent flier miles on any of the following airlines, we will put them to effective and immediate use to protect the buffalo: Delta/Northwest, United, US Airways, and Continental.
Please click here to view these and other items on our wish list.
Thank you for supporting a wish and for helping us to meet a need in the field!

Seven quick fixes to health care
What would happen soon if the health-care overhaul passes.
By Ryan Teague Beckwith
http://www.congress.org/news/2009/11/23/seven_quick_fixes_to_health_care
To hear the rhetoric on both sides, you'd think the health-care overhaul in the Senate would change the U.S. system overnight.
In reality, most of the changes — such as the new health insurance exchanges and insurance mandates for individuals — would not take place until 2014 (or 2013 in the House version).
Still, a few provisions are set to begin next year, if the legislation passes.
Some of the most significant changes would extend existing programs and rules in order to immediately reduce the number of uninsured Americans. Others would end unpopular practices in the private insurance industry.
The measures are designed to build immediate support for the longer-term provisions in the bills, which could still be changed by future legislation. They will also provide President Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats with talking points going into the 2010 elections.
If the bill passes, expect to hear a lot more about these provisions in the near future.
Below, a few of the immediate changes:
* Insuring high-risk citizens. Both bills would create a $5 billion fund for temporary insurance for citizens with pre-existing conditions who have not been insured for at least six months. The program would end once the insurance exchanges begin in 2013 or 2014.
* Extending insurance for adult children. The House bill would allow parents to keep unmarried adult children on their health insurance until their 27th birthday; the Senate bill, until their 26th birthday. This would reduce the number of uninsured young adults.
* Extending insurance for the recently unemployed. Under current law, laid-off workers are allowed to continue buying their existing insurance through the COBRA program for up to 18 months. The bills would extend that coverage until the insurance exchanges begin.
* Ending lifetime limits on benefits. Both bills would end the lifetime caps on insurance coverage which have sometimes been used to deny payments to consumers with particularly expensive treatments. Both bills would also restrict annual limits on health-care benefits.
* Ending rescission. Insurance companies often cancel policies for consumers who require expensive medical care because they made honest mistakes on their medical histories. Both bills would prohibit insurance plans from canceling coverage except in cases of fraud.
* Starting to close the doughnut hole. Both bills would begin closing the so-called "doughnut hole" in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage by providing an additional $500 in coverage starting in 2010. Over several years, the gap would be reduced until it was closed entirely.
* Taxing plastic surgery. The Senate bill would include a new 5 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery. The tax is estimated to raise $5.8 billion over the next 10 years. It does not apply to cosmetic surgery to fix problems caused by accidents, disease or birth defects.

Alaskan Human Rights
Will you help us fight for human rights? The NAACP is fighting for “all
Alaskans”, including Alaskan Natives to have their human rights when they work
for the State of Alaska. We have been fighting for this for the
last 14 years. With a new Governor,
we are working on a new campaign for human rights for all Alaskans. We hope you consider joining us in
sending letters, faxes, e mails and or phone calls to Governor Sean Parnell
asking him to do an audit on The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights and
The Alaska State Ombudsman. These
organizations are supposed to be working for the people of
Alaska, but in our view they are not. We believe that an audit will show
this. Please join us in this fight
for human rights for all Alaskans by contacting the governor and asking him to
do an audit on The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights and the Alaska State
Ombudsman. Thank you for your
prompt and courteous attention.

Today on Just Peace, we will interview attorney Jeffrey Haas, author of The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther (2010 Lawrence Hill Books). In the book Haas recounts the events leading up to and after the assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in Chicago on December 4, 1969 and about the government cover-up of the assassination. Attorney Haas has spent his career working for justice. In 1969 he and three other lawyers set up the People’s Law Office, whose clients included the Black Panthers, SDS, and other political activists. He went on to handle cases involving prisoners’ rights, police torture, and the wrongfully accused.
Also on the show will be Bruce Dixon. Dixon was a member of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1969 and 1970, during the period covered by the book, and knew Fred Hampton and some of the other persons mentioned in it. After the Black Panther Party he was a community organizer and a political consultant, among other things in Chicago. He currently resides in Marietta and is managing editor of Black Agenda Report at www.blackagendareport.com.

Lieberman
Last week, we made a great first step in the House of Representatives, but now all eyes are on the Senate to pass a bill that includes a public option.
It's going to be a close vote and a senator from Connecticut is one of the key votes blocking this important legislation.Senator Joseph Lieberman says that doing nothing would be better than a public option. He has even threatened to block a final vote that includes one.
We need to get to 100,000 signatures for the public option today so we can show Senator Lieberman that the American people want affordable, quality health care. They want a public option.
We are close to reaching our goal and you can push us over the top, but I need your help to stand up to Senator Lieberman today. There are three ways you can help.
1. Forward this message to your friends.
Tell them to go to countdowntohealthcare.com to tell Senator Lieberman that we need a real public option to make health care affordable.

Avoiding the Death Penalty; The Church vs. the Homeless; Republican Abortion Hypocrisy
http://war.change.org/blog/view/americas_veterans_deserve_a_healthy_homecoming
Hey Changemakers,
The U.S. marked Veterans Day this week, and soon a total of more than 1.8 million Americans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan will be back home.
Though many of these brave men and women will have returned to eager families and with awards for their service, many of them will also come back bearing the scars of war, including both physical injuries and psychological trauma. Ensuring that these soldiers have a healthy homecoming is a responsibility all of us share.
Retired U.S. Army Captain and Iraq War veteran Scott Quiltywrites on Change.org this week that, remarkably, there's been no national effort to fully reintegrate these veterans into our communities. The consequences - veteran unemployment, substance abuse, domestic violence, and higher-than-ever suicide rates - are hurting us all. For many veterans, the homecoming process doesn't last a day, or even a week. It can sometimes last a lifetime.
Captain Quilty should know. Three years ago he stepped on a roadside bomb in Iraq's "triangle of death," losing an arm and a leg. Today, he's become a tireless campaigner for the first national plan that details the steps we can take to improve the homecoming process for millions of veterans.
To learn more about Captain Quilty's story and join the good work he and others are doing through The Campaign for Healthy Homecoming, click here.

What the Inventor of the Flu Shot NOW Thinks of the Vaccine
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/11/17/Obama-Administration-Launches-Deceptive-Swine-Flu-Propaganda-Blitz.aspx
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

President Obama and his top health officials are engaging in a major public relations effort to divert attention away from whether its swine flu vaccine is effective and safe by focusing attention on whether there is enough of it to go around. And the media is cooperating fully.
Increasing numbers of scientists and doctors are issuing harsh criticisms of the government’s plan to vaccinate virtually the entire U.S. population with a poorly tested vaccine that is not only ineffective against swine flu, but could cripple and even kill many more people than it helps.
The CDC’s public relations campaign has been running “scare” ads that portray swine flu as a full-blown “pandemic” responsible for snuffing out countless lives. But scientists and health officials throughout the world have called the governments claims unjustified and deliberately misleading.
Dr. Mercola's Comments:
The article above, written by Richard Gale, a former Senior Research Analyst in the biotechnology and genomic industries, and Dr. Gary Null, author of Vaccine Nation, highlights one of the latest propaganda techniques used to frighten you into action, namely “scarcity of H1N1 vaccines.”
We’ve seen this tactic used before, with great effect, as people rush to the nearest vaccination facility to make sure they don’t miss the opportunity to be the one to get this rare life sustaining elixir.
It amazes me that despite all the evidence to the contrary, health officials and mass media are still saying the swine flu could kill some 90,000 Americans – if we don’t all get vaccinated.
There is simply NO evidence to support this outlandish projection. The evidence actually points to the exact opposite, that this season will have LESS deaths from flu than last year.
The data is very clear that it’s a milder than normal virus, only a few percent of all cases with the designation “swine flu” are actually the H1N1 virus, and in the Southern Hemisphere, people got over the wave of the flu just fine, before the vaccine was even available.
Government's Claims Unjustified and Deliberately Misleading
Gale and Null mention two distinguished health experts who have gone on the record to rebut government scare tactics.
“Dr. Anthony Morris, a distinguished virologist and former Chief Vaccine Office at the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA), states that “There is no evidence that any influenza vaccine thus far developed is effective in preventing or mitigating any attack of influenza” and that “The producers of these vaccines know they are worthless, but they go on selling them anyway.”
And in November 2007, the UK newspaper The Scotsman, made public warnings by the inventor of the “flu jab,” Dr. Graeme Laver.
Dr. Laver was a major Australian scientist involved in the invention of a flu vaccine, in addition to playing a leading scientific role in the discovery of anti-flu drugs. He went on record as saying the vaccine he helped to create was ineffective and [that] natural infection with the flu was safer. “I have never been impressed with its efficacy,” said Dr. Laver.”
So why is it that when it comes to public health decisions, government refuses to hear but one side of the argument?
Why are our health officials ignoring all the experts who have direct involvement with vaccines and claim to know they are neither as safe, nor as effective, as the drug industry insists they are?
What Can You Learn From History?
The last time we trusted industry and their appointed government lackeys about the swine flu vaccine, the vaccine ended up killing 300 times more people than the flu itself! It was 1976, and an outbreak of swine flu supposedly threatened the lives of millions.
But instead of the flu killing millions of people, it claimed ONE life, whereas the vaccine turned out to contain the real danger.
Twenty five people died from severe pulmonary complications after receiving the swine flu vaccine, and about 500 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome were reported after vaccination. Some 300 claims were later filed by families of Guillain-Barre Syndrome victims who died from the disease.
The 1976 swine flu vaccine debacle ended up costing the US government $3.5 billion in damages to some 4,000 vaccine injured Americans -- a direct result of the CDC’s intensive vaccination campaign.
Speeding ahead with our current mass vaccination policy after such a history lesson is plain foolish. Apparently, those in charge have chosen to learn nothing.
I agree with Gale and Null when they say that being anti-vaccine or pro-vaccine is not the most urgent issue here.
The most critical point is to evaluate whether or not there is legitimate, sound science to support either position. They write:
“… in this regard, the vaccine manufacturers and our federal health agencies have failed in the past, and continue to fail today. And they fail dismally.
There is absolutely no evidence for sound-scientific protocol or anything resembling a gold-standard behind the swine flu infection statistics and vaccine efficacy and safety clinical trials to support Obama’s and his health advisors’ claims. Instead, the reports on hospitalizations and deaths due to the H1N1 virus are grossly distorted.”
How Many Swine Flu Cases Actually Involve the H1N1 Virus?
They bring up another critical point that most people are not aware of -- that what is being reported as swine flu is in fact NOT swine flu, or even the regular flu!
As of August 30, 2009, the CDC ceased testing and counting actual H1N1 virus infections. As of that date, any and all cases or deaths of people exhibiting “flu like symptoms” are automatically tallied as an “H1N1 case,” artificially driving up the perceived threat.
The CDC’s public explanation is that they are convinced a pandemic is underway and, therefore, accurate monitoring is unnecessary because it’s so widespread, world-wide.
However, as I’ll show you in just a moment, this is simply not true! Yes, the H1N1 virus has appeared world-wide, but it is not the CAUSE of most flu like illness and death. In fact, the H1N1 virus is a tiny player, causing very little trouble.
Gale and Null explain:
“The truth is that we move annually into periods where there are dramatic increases in flu-like causing pathogens, however, the majority of these are unrelated to any strain of influenza virus.
There can between 150 and 200 different infectious pathogens—adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza, the very common coronavirus and, of course, pneumonia—that produce flu-like symptoms, and worse, during a “flu season.”
For example, how many people have heard of bocavirus, which is responsible for bronchitis and pneumonia in young children, or metapneumovirus, responsible for more than 5 percent of all flu-related illnesses? This is true during every flu season and this year is no different.
Furthermore, all flu vaccinations, including the swine flu, are useless for protecting people from these many prevalent infectious organisms.”
CBS News, after conducting a three-month investigation into the swine flu statistics, uncovered a number of very sobering facts that clearly show this swine flu pandemic for the cruel hoax it really is.
To be more precise, it was Sharyl Attkisson, an investigative correspondent for CBS News, who single-handedly uncovered this.
Sharyl has agreed to allow me to interview her about her ground breaking efforts in exposing this massive misinformation campaign, and I will feature her interview shortly.
Before beginning their investigation, Sharyl Attkisson asked the CDC for state-by-state test results prior to their halting of testing and tracking. The CDC did not initially respond, so she went to all 50 states directly, asking for their statistics on state lab-confirmed H1N1 prior to the halt of individual testing and counting in July.
What did they find? Sharyl reported:
"The results reveal a pattern that surprised a number of health care professionals we consulted. The vast majority of cases were negative for H1N1 as well as seasonal flu, despite the fact that many states were specifically testing patients deemed to be most likely to have H1N1 flu, based on symptoms and risk factors, such as travel to Mexico."
As you can see from this CBS News graphic, not only are most cases of suspected flu-like illnesses not H1N1, they're not even the flu but more likely some type of cold or upper respiratory infection!
(Image from CBS News)
The interesting part of this is that a lot of these facts are not really hidden from you. Simply looking through the CDC’s own website with a critical eye and a rational mind, you can discover the truth for yourself.
Here’s just one example that contradicts what they’re saying in their official missives.
According to their own data, far fewer people have died from H1N1 than any seasonal flu in the past, world-wide!
For the US, this graph from the CDC, showing the "Pneumonia and Influenza Mortality for 122 US Cities" also shows that, so far, this year's flu mortality is FAR below that of 2008.
Were you panicking last year?
If not, why should you panic now when the risks are at a near all-time LOW?
Really, sit down somewhere and seriously think about this for a moment...
In light of all the facts, the question that begs to be asked is “Why is the government and their handmaidens, the media, fueling this panic mentality?”
Why are we once again talking about vaccination for every man woman and child in the nation, or, in fact, the world?
Why are Vaccine Safety Advocates Equated to Anti-Vaccine Fringe Lunatics?
Do you, or do you not, want the products injected into your body to be safe and reasonably effective?
If you do, you’ll need to seriously consider who is actually looking out for your health and safety, because the drug industry is not, and health officials with industry ties are not, and the FDA, which has a revolving door to the drug industry, isn’t doing it either.
Everyone wants safety. No one wants to get hurt by a drug or a vaccine, or have their child adversely affected . But few want to do what’s necessary to ensure such safety exists. Those who insist on it are branded as quacks and lunatics.
It’s an interesting dilemma… But it explains why many health care professionals stay mum on the subject, for fear of hurting their professional status.
Others, for whatever reason, are convinced vaccines offer the best protection against viruses, completely ignoring how your body and immune system actually works; how real immunity is achieved; and how your lifestyle affects your risk for complications.
For example, in session 1 of a Council On Foreign Relations Symposium on Pandemic Influenza: Science, Economics and Foreign Policy, held on October 16, 2009, an attendee identified as Tom Wilson (ph) from Cornell Medical School made the following statement to the panel:
“Sir, I think we're all aware that the anti-vaccine movement is having a field day on the Internet and on media outlooks like Fox News and so on, causing productions in vaccine uptake, and it appears to be a pretty unholy alliance of the ultra right and the ultra left working together to sort of hit with strong anti-tactics.
I'm not sure we're countering these people very well, and one of the things I do in my spare time is counter the AIDS denial, as to people believe (who) HIV is harmless or doesn't exist, and which led to the deaths of over 350,000 people in South Africa over the past decade.
And you have to take these people on in a different style than scientists are used to. We have to develop better sound bites. We have to develop better discussion. You don't really -- you can't really debate these people, but you have to develop the counter methods.
For example, you hear that we shouldn't take flu vaccines because the mercury will kill us. Well, Paul Offit in the New York Times last week pointed out that there is less mercury in a flu shot than there is in a tuna fish sandwich, and that's a powerful sound bite to use against the crazy people who think that vaccines will kill you. That's just one example.
We need to develop anti-tactics to get across the message that vaccines are safe and beneficial to society, and we need to learn to deal with the crazy people who would try and stop us doing that.”
(For the full transcript, see this link.)
The kind of sound bites this man recommends are just the type of dangerous misinformation we’re trying to teach you about. Because to think that the mercury you’d ingest from fish would affect you in the same way as mercury being injected straight into your body, bypassing all of your body’s natural defenses and detoxing mechanisms is simply false.
Why H1N1 Likely Will NEVER Be a True Pandemic Threat
To finish up, I’d like to quote Peter Palese, Professor and Chair, Microbiology and Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Mount Sinai School of Medicine – one of the panel members of the Council On Foreign Relations Symposium on Pandemic Influenza:
“ … So, clearly, when I say this 2009 virus is like another seasonal virus, I don't mean this is a harmless virus which we should ignore. No. The regular flu is bad enough and this 2009 virus is also bad enough. Having said that, it lacks certain signatures, certain molecular signs which are associated with the 1918 pandemic and then explained in 1957 and in 1968, and that is one of the genes.
… It has a technical name, PB1F2, and that is missing in the 2009 virus. And it could acquire this by exchanging that mini-chromosome and getting one which carries that PB1F2 or by point mutation, however, and that would make it more virulent.
However, it is sort of like if I put a more powerful engine into a VW, if I put a Lamborghini engine into a VW or a little Fiat or some car, it may not be better. It may not fit. It may not mesh and that, I think, may also be happening with the 2009.
By accumulating and getting mutations or getting this other gene, more virulent gene, it may not end up as something which is really a sports car which runs 200 miles an hour, so there is a lot which has to sort of fit and mesh in order to make a virus really a 1918 or 1957.”
Folks, from every which angle, the swine flu pandemic is NOT what it’s being made out to be. Perhaps it’s all about greed and POWER - the government and corporations controlling what gets into your body and what goes into their bank accounts; about making a few bucks in a suffering economy when people can’t afford their regular medications and sales are down.
Perhaps it’s about saving face. They over-reacted, they hyped it up, and no one wants to admit they cried wolf – especially since billions of dollars were spent on vaccines that no one really needs.
But, like Gale and Dr. Null said, “The lie is too large for them to not expose themselves if you simply look.”
It’s true.
Remember, as tragic as any death is, the greater tragedy is using the few deaths that have occurred -- which were in most cases not directly caused by the H1N1 virus – as fuel to get rid of useless vaccines that may do more harm than good.
There are signs that the public across the world is starting to “get” it, however.
France, for example, has only been able to convince 0.1 percent of their population to get vaccinated. As of November 5, only 50,000 Frenchmen had lined up for the shot since the beginning of their campaign, out of a population of 65 million. And only 10 percent of health care workers have received the vaccine.
The French Health minister called the mass vaccination campaign “timid.”
Let’s keep it that way, everywhere, for everyone’s safety.

ZOOM IN: FOCUS ON EXECUTIVE REVIEW Leonard Peltier
A new campaign sponsored by the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee (LP-DOC) with Friends of Peltier and the International Peltier Forum
The United States courts have acknowledged that Leonard Peltier was the victim of official misconduct and convicted on the basis of fabricated and suppressed evidence, as well as coerced testimony. However, the courts have not granted Leonard a new trial.
Attorney General Eric Holder can conduct an Executive Review of the Peltier case and provide a remedy. In fact, he has said that in the face of misconduct by Department of Justice officials, it’s his job to do the right thing. That’s why we’ve renewed the call for an Executive Review of the Peltier case.
Join us in our new campaign to demand equal justice for Leonard Peltier.
The Campaign
People often ask... “Who are those Peltier supporters, anyway?” We’re all just ordinary folks from all around the world. We’re a diverse group, representative of all races/ethnicities, religions, social classes, political beliefs, etc. Yet, we have at least one thing in common. We know a grave injustice has been done to Leonard Peltier.
The campaign concept is simple: (1) Send a message to AG Holder--We want justice... equal justice... and we want it NOW and (2) Put a face to the message.
The campaign has two components:
Action #1: Personal Response--Where you’ll provide a photographic image of yourself holding a campaign sign, as well as your name, address and e-mail address.
Action #2: Community Response--Where you’ll go out into your community and get others to participate in the campaign.
A box filled to the brim with campaign flyers, including all our faces, will be delivered to AG Holder’s office on or around February 6, 2010 – the 34th anniversary of Leonard Peltier’s arrest.
For details and instructions, see http://www.facebook.com/l/0c603;www.whoisleonardpeltier.info.
We also ask that you contribute $1 to help us with expenses associated with the campaign. That’s right--ONE U.S. dollar! You can, of course, donate more if you wish. Checks and money orders should be made out to “LPDOC”. If you prefer, you may donate online at http://www.facebook.com/l/0c603;www.whoisleonardpeltier.info.
Contrary to what some say, the Committee has limited resources and, like any other grassroots organization, struggles financially. Your dollars are needed to make this and other campaigns successful and so that more events--like those held in Boulder, Lewisburg, and Washington, DC, this year--can be planned and successfully implemented in the months ahead. Please give what you can.
Deadline
All photos should be received NO LATER THAN JANUARY 31, 2010 (but please don’t wait until then to send us your photo).
Again, for instructions, see http://www.facebook.com/l/0c603;www.whoisleonardpeltier.info. Download the campaign kit and review all of the materials provided. The campaign e-mail address is zoom@whoisleonardpeltier.info. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or request assistance.
Note to our local support group coordinators: Please let us know you’re on board with this new campaign by sending an e-mail to zoom@whoisleonardpeltier.info. We’ll work closely with you to help you succeed. To assist us with the planning of branch-specific special communications (which may be state, regional or international in scope) please provide your name and location in the body of your e-mail.
Thanks to all of you for the work you do. With your help, Leonard WILL see freedom soon.

Osiyo,
The Cherokee Nation Color Guard was featured in the New York Veterans Day Parade and they were featured on CNN’s iReport, http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-355503. There is still time to volunteer on the building of the Cherokee Nation Veterans Center. For more information visit http://veteran.cherokee.org.
As the holidays approach, so does winter weather. Here are some winter weather preparedness tips.
Cherokee Nation Emergency Management - Winter Weather Preparedness Tips
During a Winter Storm
Guidelines
• Listen to your radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for weather reports and emergency information.
• Eat regularly and drink ample fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol.
• Conserve fuel, if necessary, by keeping your residence cooler than normal. Temporarily close off heat to some rooms.
• If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers of newspapers and wrap pipes in rags. Completely open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes, starting where they were most exposed to the cold (or where the cold was most likely to penetrate).
• Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid build-up of toxic fumes. Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least three feet from flammable objects.
If You Are Out Doors
• Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack—a major cause of death in the winter. If you must shovel snow, stretch before going outside.
• Cover your mouth. Protect your lungs from extremely cold air by covering your mouth when outdoors. Try not to speak unless absolutely necessary.
• Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly.
• Watch for signs of frostbite. These include loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.
• Watch for signs of hypothermia. These include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion.
Wado! (Thank you)

It has been suggested that the reason the Cherokee were originally open to the establishment of missions was so the children could learn to read and write, as the Cherokee syllabary had not yet been invented. Cherokees were interested in Christianity, but more interested in the byproduct, which was education.
