Time passes quickly! Even though it seems September has only just arrived, the month is nearly gone. Fall is officially here and several departments within the Cherokee Nation have set their fall schedules.
To be eligible for tribal membership in the Cherokee Nation, you must apply and be able to present a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB), issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Sequoyah Schools to Host Youth Cheer Clinic : 9/24/2010 8:29:00 AM

The Sequoyah Schools cheerleaders will host a youth cheerleading clinic, Oct. 4, 5 and 7 from 4-5 p.m. for children ages 4 to 12 in the lower level of The Place Where They Play. Cheer clinic participants will learn a cheer, chant and dance to perform at half-time of the Sequoyah football game on Oct. 8.

Tribal Council Passes 2011 Budget: 9/14/2010 4:16:00 PM

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council voted 10–6 to pass the tribe’s budget for fiscal year 2011 during their monthly meeting held Monday night in Tahlequah. The operating budget for the coming year is set for more than $583.4 million and included requests for $278 million for health services, $56 million for human services, $51 million for education services, $28 million for housing and more. Councilors voting for the budget were Chris Soap, David Thornton, Cara Cowan Watts, Buel Anglen, Jack Baker, Julia Coats, Harley Buzzard, Bradley Cobb, Don Garvin and Meredith Frailey. Those voting against were Chuck Hoskin, Jr., Tina Glory-Jordan, Curtis Snell, Bill John Baker, Joe Crittenden and Jodie Fishinghawk.

The 58th annual Cherokee National Holiday held over Labor Day weekend brought thousands of visitors and citizens to the Cherokee Nation capitol in Tahlequah. As in previous years, numerous activities and events were available for all ages to enjoy during the festival that many Cherokees consider a homecoming celebration.

As part of the “Chief’s Challenge” series of races, the Cherokee Nation will be hosting a 5K Run and a Fun Run on Saturday, Sept. 18, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Cherokee Nation Courthouse in downtown Tahlequah. The “Chief’s Challenge” is a special program started this year with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith challenging others to come out and race him during the summer in the various Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation 5K runs leading up to the Tulsa Run in October, in which Smith was selected to be a celebrity runner.
