Memorial service held for former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller

A memorial service for former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation Wilma Mankiller, who passed away the morning of April 6, 2010, was held Saturday. The service was held at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds in Tahlequah. Mankiller served 12 years in elective office at the Cherokee Nation, the first two as Deputy Principal Chief followed by 10 years as Principal Chief. She retired from public office in 1995. Among her many honors, Mankiller was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton.

Tahlequah, Okla., (April 7, 2010) --- Originally built in 1844, the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum is Oklahoma’s oldest public building and will formally operate as the Cherokee Nation’s first wholly owned and operated museum following today’s dedication. The Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum is located at 122 E. Keetoowah St., Tahlequah, OK 74464.

Nine Sequoyah Seniors Are Finalists for the Gates Millennium Scholarship: 4/5/2010 3:36:00 PM

Nine Sequoyah Schools seniors recently received notification that they are finalists in the Gates Millennium Scholarship competition. If awarded, each student will receive an all-expense paid scholarship to the college of their choice for the next ten years, or through a doctoral program.

History Talk to Feature Archeological Findings: 4/5/2010 9:25:00 AM

The next talk in the Cherokee Nation History series will focus on archeological findings and preservation efforts surrounding noted Cherokee sites. It will take place on Friday, April 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the Tribal Council Chamber at the Cherokee Nation Complex. Guest speakers will be two nationally known academics from the University of Georgia, Dr. Jace Weaver and R. Alfred Vick. Weaver and Vick are consultants who have been working with the Cherokee Heritage Center as it rebuilds the Cherokee Ancient Village. Weaver’s talk will be “Finding the Rosebuds: Archaeological Work at the Male and Female Seminary Sites,” while Vick’s will highlight “Plans for the Reconstruction of an Early 18th Century Cherokee Village.”
