In this week's edition, the Cherokee Nation and the State of Oklahoma reached an agreement on prosecuting polluters of the Illinois River. This agreement is significant because it affirms the Cherokee Nation's rights to the Illinois River watershed.
In other legal news, the CN District Court ruled that elected officials who have served since 2003 may run for office again. That means that some tribal councilors and the principal chief are considered to be in their first term and may run again in 2011.
Be sure to watch for our three-part series concerning obesity in Indian Country beginning Monday. The first installment talks about the prevalence of obesity among children from infancy to adolescence. The second and third parts examine obesity among teens and adults.

The Treaty of July 19, 1866 gives the Cherokee Nation the right to elect a delegate to U.S. Congress. This is a right that has not been extinguished. This was the last treaty signed with the Cherokee.
