Dave
LET THEM EAT CAKE, SAID MARIE ANTOINETTE. TRUE BELIEVERS & MASS MOVEMENTS
MNN. May 8, 2009. As African songwriter, Bob Marley, told us in effect: “If you don’t know where you are coming from, how can you know where you are going to?” The early l950s and l960s writers explored mass consciousness, mass movements and fanaticism. Marshall McLuhan worried that the media and advertising would take advantage of mass consciousness. He thought the “global village” would bring humanity’s tribal memory under the electronic control of a single consciousness. He thought that individuals could be manipulated, exploited and controlled in a group. [1964 www.leaderu.com]. How right he was.
Eric Hoffer wrote in the “True Believer”, 1951, that mass movements can be created to serve the evil purposes of a few. People could be recruited, particularly the fanatical, driven, unreasonable, those convinced of their rightness, infallibility and inevitability of their cause. To draw them in, the lives of the poor, misfits, outcasts, adolescents, selfish, bored and seekers of redemption have to be made miserable, insecure and hopeless. www.mekong.net/hoffer.htm] With the collapse of the economy and social programs, people are overcome with insecurity and uncertainty. They are seeking substitutes and made ripe for the picking.
Along comes an opportunistic charismatic leader or figurehead who has all the answers. He promises refuge from their anxieties and meaningless lives. He will free them from their worthless selves to become the masters of the human race. Hitler told the Germans, “If you follow me, you are going to control the world for a thousand years”. They are convinced that they are a mighty people. They know, when they are broken down, they are meek and frightened individuals.
The charismatic tells them to look over the horizon to a glorious future, not at the present. In today’s pyramid sales schemes only the top guy makes all the money. Those below do all the work and make a pittance. Eventually they burn out.
A mass movement needs men of words, the fanatics and the practical men of action. After a while the fanatic keeps groping for extremes which is provided by the leader[s].
He subconsciously or directly tells people their lives today are dire and they have no future. People don’t really want to be free because this means taking responsibility. They want to hand their fate over to some other ephemeral entity that has taken over their lives. A mass movement gives them an excuse to hate, bully, torture, murder and betray without shame and remorse. They accept a big brother who watches everything they do. It’s as though they are marching towards some mythical goal like Dorothy who was seeking to find the Wizard of Oz. She found out he was a deceiving imp mouthing great words through a loudspeaker.
They will be freed from the created meaninglessness of their lives. Their short comings and self condemnation is transferred onto hatred of others by doing grave injustices against them. They have to infect themselves with hate toward an identifiable group of people by hurting them. The masses are brought together to direct their anger at one scapegoat. It’s like a school of sharks who smell blood, or a group of hyenas who surround their prey. Tormenting people satisfies their blood lust. They feel reassured when they see our downfall.
An enemy is created as a scapegoat. Unifying agents are hatred, imitation, persuasion, coercion, action, suspicion and intolerance to dissent. It suppresses their inadequacy, worthlessness, guilt and other shortcomings. Their self-contempt, helplessness and cowardice are taken out on others. They are driven by feelings of personal inadequacy, a desire to tear down others or to rise into higher levels of the totalitarian hierarchy.
Presently there seems to be a campaign to attack the “guardians of the eastern door” of Great Turtle Island, the Mohawks. There is an invasion by these forces of European-spawned fanatical movements. We, the flint people, are the first to meet this onslaught. Our way of dealing with these forces is by calm, reasonable and analytical weighing of all issues before arriving at a consensual democratic decision over the council fire of the Rotino’shonni:onwe, Iroquois.
In the new world order, the people will become like little mice running on a treadmill to nowhere. The war lords are gaining control through consolidation of politics, commerce, military, police, media and colonial agents of change such as new age psychobabble movements. This mishmash of beliefs catches people who are insecure in their ideas and identity.
When the French got fed up with the gluttony and brutality of their aristocracy and royalty, they killed them. Then a dictator came in, Napoleon. The people handed themselves over to him.
Motivations for mass movements are interchangeable: religious, nationalist and class-based. They use the same tactics: sacrifice themselves and others for the future goals; devalue the past and present; and escape by creating an imaginary self and joining a movement.
Cynical mass movements around the world are based on secret plans by a select group of elites based on lies and threats. By the time the people find out, it’s too late. They have been destroyed or taken over. They are dispossessed and made to feel they have no hope unless they follow the leader who is taking them to a destiny of destruction or enslavement.
Hoffer says that after a fanatic destroys his enemies, he makes enemies of his cohorts. The problem with hatred is that the participants lose those values they at one time set out to defend.
The true believer can be dangerous and deadly, especially when they have nothing to lose. The only way to defeat the true believer of a false cause is to tell the truth about how deceived they are.

Lynne Harlan: Cherokee children reach for the stars
Friday, May 8, 2009
"This week, the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee presented
awards to Cherokee schoolchildren throughout the region. As I listened to
the stories written by the children and their families when they were
introduced, it struck me that nearly every child planned on furthering their
education. Even the kindergarten children had big dreams of colleges and
careers.
For nearly two centuries Cherokee leaders have valued education. In the
early days of contact, Cherokee leaders sought religious groups to come into
the Cherokee Nation and build schools. As those religious groups established
themselves they often focused on proselytizing rather than on education.
When the goal of those religious groups changed, our leaders invited them to
leave and replaced them with another group with the purpose of education.
That focus on education is not unique to our people. Native leaders
throughout the country have worked tirelessly to provide educational
opportunities for our communities. Our people have made great strides toward empowering
our communities through education. We now have educated individuals who
work for our people and in our communities, and that dedication is
influencing our youth."

Earlier this week, President Obama announced a bold set of proposals to crack down on overseas tax havens and encourage job creation at home.
While hard working Americans pay our fair share, some of the largest, most powerful interests exploit tax loopholes that actually reward companies for creating jobs overseas and allow them to use tax shelters to avoid paying their rightful share.
To see the difference between your approach and theirs, check out our new Tax Fairness Calculator.
You can enter what you earn, find out what the average American owes on that amount, and then see what you could pay if you were a multi-national corporation. Try it out!
Warning: Using this tax calculator may fill you with an irresistible urge to fix this broken system. Fortunately, that's exactly what we can do -- if we act together.
The special interests will fight hard for the status quo, and their lobbyists are already swarming in Washington. Now we have to stand up and show how much support the President's proposals really have out here in America.
After you use the Tax Fairness Calculator, please add your name to our public declaration saying that you stand behind the President's plan for tax fairness and job creation.
Try the calculator and add your name now:
http://my.barackobama.com/TaxCalculator
These proposals are a key part of the President's plan to get our economy back on track, and it's time for us to stand up and help make it happen. Working together to make our country a fairer, more prosperous place is the reason we built this movement.
Thanks so much,
Mitch

FORTY-ONE YEAR LEGACY OF MOHAWK RESISTANCE AT AKWESASNE BORDER
While the Tamils are in the news every day, protesting and blocking roads, the Mohawks are being ignored by the mainstream media...
FORTY-ONE YEAR LEGACY OF MOHAWK RESISTANCE AT AKWESASNE BORDER Next march on May 29, 2009.
MNN. May 10, 2009. Over 250 Mohawks marched on May 8, 2009, against guns and violence at the U.S.-Canada border. [link at end] Canada is militarizing all borders across Canada. Guards will carry Beretta 8 mm guns for a start on June 1, 2009. The safety of Mohawks and all border crossings in Canada are being jeopardized. The Akwesasne checkpoint is on a large island in the St. Lawrence River, in the middle of a highly populated residential area. It is the border-crossing from NYS to Cornwall, Ontario. The day-to-day security provided by an unarmed Mohawk security has always been enough.
We are the most policed people in the world. Almost 20 U.S. and Canadian enforcement agencies traverse our community. Canada has two alternatives: to peacefully operate on our land or to move the customs building and compound off the island.
After construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the International Bridge in the 1950s the customs station was placed on the island. We tried but could not stop it. A commitment was made that armed guards would never be put in the middle of our neighborhood, which we saw as dangerous for both Customs and Mohawks.
Mohawks have not fallen for this trap. Daily disagreements have been instigated against Mohawks who must pass through the checkpoint on a daily basis. There have been serious injuries, hospitalizations, charges and assaults. So far there have been no fatalities. There has been a steady increase in racial profiling and slurs directed at us, sanctioned by Canada. Incidents are being provoked to justify armed guards.
Hundreds of complaints have been filed with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Canada Justice Department and the Canadian Human Rights Commission. No peaceful resolution has come forward.
In an August 2002 report co-commissioned by Transport Canada and the Mohawks, 70% of border crossers are Akwesasne Mohawks. It is adjacent to a bus stop for children, recreational fields, play area, large number of homes, the only convenience store, several small businesses and other features of a well populated and highly trafficked area. We need to visit our family and friends, get to work or school, attend health, social, cultural, recreational gatherings and shop or conduct business. Next to the customs children slide during the winter on the hills. People ride horses and walk in the open spaces. Children play volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. Recently the border patrol perpetrated a high speed chase where 3 people were burnt to death at the cross roads. Violence and death is their business!
Guns are for killing! They must be banned in this corridor. On Saturday, May 8th 2009, the Mohawks marched from the U.S. Port of Entry, across the Three Nations Bridge to the City of Cornwall. We called for a peaceful solution and a meeting with the Minister of Public Safety, Peter Van Loan, and the Mohawk representatives.
Grandmothers who marched at the “You are on Indian Land” demonstration in December 20, 1968, carried their grandchildren across the same bridge in 2009. They reminisced as they passed the checkpoint. One proudly looked in the face of the customs officers and said, “You’re not going to intimidate me. I have never lost my spirit to resist. I will stand my legal ground no matter what you do to me.”
Canada and U.S. are watching to see if we give up. We are one of the first groups to stand up to guns, brute force, harassment and attempts at totalitarianism. Friends from surrounding U.S. and Canadian communities honked their horns in support. U.S. policies are followed to turn Canada into an armed camp. We say, “No, you will not terrorize us, Americans and Canadians into submission on Great Turtle Island”.
Officers know we are a peaceful people. Customs officers need a reason to draw their guns and shoot us. We are being entrapped into defending ourselves. The result could be deadly. If we heard that, “someone was just shot at the border”, our families would pour out of nearby homes in minutes. Canada is setting up a scenario to justify cross-Canada martial law.
Mainstream corporate media did not cover this historic event. The real media are word of mouth, personal contacts of the people through phone calls, emails, communication between communities, friends and relatives around the world.
By law Canada must fully consult us and a majority of us must agree on whether anyone can set up an armed camp in the middle of our community. This is the law. They know we would not agree to this.
There are numerous similar crossings in highly populated areas. Canada cannot justify its actions in Akwesasne.
There is no history of violence in Canada against its citizens. In the U.S. most agencies are armed. At the U.S. border crossing numerous incidents of intimidation with guns, shootings and some fatalities have occurred. In Canada enforcement agents are also being taught to shoot to kill, whether we are armed or not and even if there is no reason to pull us over. Previously there was less corruption among government agents. Today they are being given a free hand to kill and to have guns to protect their illegal businesses as border guards. They can and are stopping us at their own discretion for no reason at all. They take us to confined areas where no one can see their cruelty. No surveillance equipment is inside to record their savagery. They’re getting away with murder!
A long time ago the Rotino’shonni:onwe Iroquois decided to stop conflict against our nations by burying our weapons of war. The colonists agreed to this. Their acts of aggression violate their agreement to live on our land in peace. In effect, they are being given a license to try to kill us with impunity.

Major Health Care Announcement - Watch it Live!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services Mon, May 11, 2009 at 9:16 AM
Reply-To: "U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services"
To: sharon kitchen
Friends,
This afternoon, President Obama will be making a major announcement: health care industry leaders are agreeing to take steps that could save the country $2 trillion over the next 10 years.
The coalition taking this action represents union members, insurance companies, doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, and they have agreed to reduce the annual health care spending growth rate by 1.5 percentage points for the next 10 years.
This is big news for our country and for families who are struggling with the high cost of health care. The steps these organizations have agreed to take, combined with comprehensive health care reform, could result in savings of roughly $2,500 for American families.
The President will be speaking today about this important step forward, and you can watch his remarks live at 12:30 PM EDT on www.HealthReform.gov. While you’re there, be sure to sign the statement of support for comprehensive reform and encourage your friends and colleagues to visit the site.
Today’s announcement is another big step toward comprehensive reform and with your help we will make reform a reality.
Sincerely,
Jenny Backus

LIVESTOCK INTERESTS HARASS WILD BISON IN AND AROUND YELLOWSTONE
Exclusive Video Footage Available
May 11, 2009 MEDIA ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Contacts:
Stephany Seay, BFC, 406-646-0070 / bfc-media@wildrockies.org
Mike Mease, BFC, 406-646-0070 / mease@wildrockies.org
WEST YELLOWSTONE, MONTANA: For the past two weeks government officials have been engaged in large-scale hazing operations, forcing wild bison off of their spring calving grounds on Gallatin National Forest, deep into Yellowstone National Park. Agents from the MT Department of Livestock, Yellowstone National Park and other agencies use horses, snowmobiles, ATVs, and helicopters to target America's only continuously wild bison.
Bison are often injured during such operations. Calves are separated from their mothers or chased to exhaustion. Pregnant bison, fleeing the agents, sometimes miscarry. Hazing operations disrupt the all of the area's native wildlife. At least two grizzly bears have been caught up in the agency's recent hazing operations. Wolves, moose, elk, Sand Hill cranes, bald and golden eagles and numerous other resident and migratory species are disturbed during hazing operations. The DOL helicopter flies above local housing areas, disturbing and upsetting residents.
Under the new Adaptive Management Changes to the Interagency Bison Management Plan, more tolerance was to be provided to bison along the Park's western boundary. However, the adaptations set human-crafted rules that trigger management actions before May 15 as evidenced by the hazing operations on Gallatin National Forest along the south side of the Madison River beginning in late-April.
"The Adaptive Management changes were designed to set the buffalo up to fail, with bison numbers, land-use timelines, and manmade boundaries that even the IBMP partners know are meaningless to buffalo, their group dynamics, and migratory instincts and behavior," said Stephany Seay, Media Coordinator with Buffalo Field Campaign.
Buffalo Field Campaign patrols have so far witnessed more than two hundred bison, including dozens of newborn calves and many pregnant buffalo, being chased for miles through pockets of deep snow, barbed wire fences, thick forests laden with dead-fall, fast moving river currents, mucky wetlands, and steep, sandy bluffs.
Today, hazing is expected to resume, lasting through the week and likely into June. The agencies' goal is to rid Montana of wild bison family groups by May 15th. Bison will even be forced off of the Horse Butte Peninsula where they should have year-round access, since there are never any cattle on the landscape.
"Buffalo are a keystone species that are needed on Horse Butte to help restore grasslands harmed by grazing cattle," said Darrell Geist, habitat coordinator for Buffalo Field Campaign. "By forcibly removing buffalo from the land, every plant and native species benefiting from their presence suffers."
Fewer than 3,000 wild bison exist in the United States, all inhabiting areas in and around Yellowstone National Park. Since 2000, under the Interagency Bison Management Plan, thousands of wild American buffalo have been harassed and killed, with millions of federal tax dollars wasted each year to carry out these abusive, superfluous operations. The purported excuse for the activities is to prevent the transmission of brucellosis, a European cattle disease, from wild bison to livestock. There are no cattle present in the area and there has never been a documented case of wild bison transmitting the livestock-disease brucellosis to cattle.
Buffalo Field Campaign is the only group working in the field, every day, to stop the slaughter of the wild American buffalo. Volunteers defend the buffalo and their habitat and advocate for their lasting protection. For more information, video clips and photos visit Buffalo Field Campaign.

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION – TIME FOR GREAT TURTLE ISLAND TEA PARTY – Ol’ US Termination Policy Rears Ugly Head in Canada
MNN. May 11, 2009. Ontario MPP Christine Elliott, the wife of federal Minister of Finance, Jim Flaherty, started a campaign on the risks of smoking cigarettes made by Indigenous. Health Canada said that Indigenous cigarettes are worse for human health than cigarettes made by Big Tobacco, and that’s absurd!
Big Tobacco won’t tell anybody what they put into their cigarettes. In the U.S. Philip Morris put in ammonia so nicotine could go to the brain faster and make it more addictive. [yessmokes.com] The patent for fire safe cigarette paper made with more carcinogens is owned by Phillip Morris. Most Indigenous business people use basic tobacco. Poisons and toxins cost money.
Why doesn’t Elliott scare smokers off all cigarettes? It’s a legal business for Big Tobacco and so it is for Indigenous. Maybe they’re backing her campaign to become leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party.
Is Elliot going to go back to old sales pitches like warding off emphysema and TB, losing weight and coping with depression? In movies smoking represents rebelliousness, defiance, empowerment, low class, manhood, outdoor ruggedness, fun, partying, alcohol drinking, socializing and cheating authority and not getting caught. The Marlborough Man died of lung cancer from smoking. Virginia slims was marketed to little girls to be thin. Beautiful women dragging on a cig induces kids to smoke. It’s so cool!
The main argument for cutting out competition and giving Big Tobacco a monopoly has to do with taxes and lawsuits.
In 1773, Britain's Dutch East India Company had large stocks of tea that could not be sold. It was on the verge of bankruptcy. To save it, the government passed the 1773 Tea Act to give the company a monopoly to export tea directly to the colonies without paying taxes. The company could undersell American merchants and monopolize the trade. Americans started to smuggle and sell tea at cheaper prices.
The East India Company granted franchises to co-operative American merchants. Britain planned to do this with other commodities. Those excluded got mad. They questioned whether Britain had a right to tax the colonies as they did not elect members to Parliament. It was “taxation without representation”. The colonists boycotted Britain and drank smuggled tea. Britain tried unsuccessfully to undercut the smugglers.
The colonists hatched a plan to stop the East India Company from landing its tea in colonial ports. East India company agents were forced to resign. Tea was either returned to England or warehoused. A huge surplus accumulated. Britain did not drop the tax or its purported right to govern the colonies. The taxes Britain collected were used to pay colonial governors and judges to keep them dependant on the British, like today’s band and tribal councils.
In Boston, the agents wouldn’t resign. The royal governor and his men decided to land the tea anyway. Three ships made it into the harbor. On December 16, 1773, three companies of fifty men each, dressed as Mohawk Rotiskenrakete, boarded the ships and dumped 600,000 pounds of tea into the harbor. Other ports followed.
The Coercive Act was passed to make Massachusetts pay damages. They refused. In 1774 the British closed down the port of Boston. This reduced the powers of self government. Traitorous British officers were tried. The guilty were quartered in the barns and empty houses of the colonists. This sparked the American Revolutionary War.
The colonists passed themselves off as Mohawks to make a point. Either they saw us as Indigenous and free people who couldn’t be taxed by foreigners or colonists. Or they were trying blame us for the rebellion.
We are presently being pushed into poverty and starvation to force us to relinquish our non taxable status. We are sovereign caretakers of Great Turtle Island. We never voted to become U.S. or Canadian citizens. The colonists bully us: “Give us our cut or starve!” just like street gang enforcers. We can’t get jobs anywhere. We have a right to survive by our traditional trade and commerce free of harassment.
In 2009 the British are trying to scapegoat us. Most Big Tobacco companies are headquartered in Great Britain. They still control the colonies of U.S. and Canada. We constantly resist these carpetbaggers.
Big Tobacco sell toxic cigarettes all over the world. They are being sued by governments for billions for causing deaths from cancer and other sicknesses. The media campaign against us is that Mohawks make bad cigarettes that cause cancer. So sue them! Big Tobacco makes cigarettes that are good for you.
This is how Big Tobacco will pay off their law suits. It’s the old U.S. 1953 Termination Act scheme concocted by American tycoons through the Conservatives of Canada. In the 1990s Big Tobacco set up the businesses on our land. The number of cigarettes produced by us is greatly inflated. Arbitrary sums of $40 to $50 million in fines for “smuggling” are purportedly owed by us. The governments change the law so our land can be foreclosed and seized for fines owed to the government. An armed occupation force is brought into our communities to make it unlivable to scatter us. Our land is given to the federal or provincial governments who will hand it over to the politicians, their backers and real estate agencies for sale.
Canada, Quebec and Ontario have put arbitrary fines against us to seize our properties. Then they will try to sell it off to help pay off the fines of Big Tobacco, give some to the government and the middle men can pocket some themselves.
It’s not what they want us to see. It’s scapegoating. Put the pressure on us. The guns. The border. The cigarettes. No economy. Tear our families apart. While Big Tobacco in England keeps on rolling their smokes!

Warning: latest PR spin by the church-state - please share this with residential school survivors
Hi everyone.=
I just found out today that the National Film Board of Canada was =llowed in to film the pope's so-called "private audience" with government =ndians like Phil Fontaine, as part of the "apology" to Canadian residentia= school survivors. (An apology is a defense of one's actions, in the dicti=nary, by the way).
It t=rns out that the National Film Board is planning a big movie showing how "=rogressive" the pope is and how this whole thing is "settled" now. It want= to interview rez school survivors about their story and use them as part =f this latest propaganda film.
The film start= full shooting in the fall, and will probably be released in the new year =f 2010.
This is the kind of big publicity spin that the government =nd church need to do, now that the story of genocide in Canada is getting =ut to the world - and the pope is personally implicated in ordering the co=er up of these crimes.
=e need to get the real story out even more now, reject these "apologies", and bring the crim=nals to justice ourselves.
And ... warn residential school=survivors and their families NOT to agree to any interview by anyone repre=enting the National Film Board of Canada.

Part One.
In 1969, at a time when there were only ten Native American PHDs, Academic Revolutionary Lehman Brightman Founded & Coordinated The First Native Americans Studies Program in The United States at UC Berkeley. Two Months Into Assuming the teaching position at UCB, Brightman & a Group of Students attended the Annual Meeting of The National Congress of American Indians. At that Time, says Brightman, "it was the largest, most politically powerful Indian Group in The United States---Every Indian Of Importance was there."
This Video is Proof of the First Time American Indians Showed their Displeasure On The National Level Towards The Federal Government. October 9th 1969 The National Congress of American Indians Held their Annual Meeting in Albuquerque New Mexico.
Scheduled speakers included Vice President Spiro Theodore Agnew & Walter J. Hickel, the Nixon-appointed Secretary of the Interior and Edward Kennedy. At the time Hickel, whose Office Oversaw the Bureau of Indian Affairs, was leading a Movement to END ALL FEDERAL TREATIES with Indian Nations. ''We can't just let nature run wild,'' said Walter J. Hickel. Professor Brightman, who had Testified before Congress Against Hickel's appointment Organized a Picket Line that Booed Hickel Off The Stand. Later, Members of UNA Duped The BIA into Signing a Petition Calling For Hickel's Resignation.
Walter J. Hickel served as governor of Alaska from 1966-1968 and from 1990 -- 1994 and as U.S. secretary of the interior from 1969 -- 1970.

Indians Invade Mount Rushmore
On August 29th, 1970, a small group of dedicated young Indians Invaded Mount Rushmore, the so called "National Shrine of Democracy," located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Indian people who took part in this out standing feat, did so at the Invitation of the Local Indian people from Rapid City, South Dakota and the Surrounding Reservations. Most of these young Indians were from Different Tribes and Reservations who Volunteered to Help the Sioux in their efforts to force the Federal Government to pay for the illegal taking of their land 94 years ago in 1877. The Invasion started at 8:00PM. Sat. Evening, the 29th of August 1970, when 23 young Indians, most of whom were college students, braved arrest and fines to help the Sioux regain their Sacred Black Hills. By 7:00AM the next Morning after an all night game of hide and seek or (rangers and Indians) most of the protesters had reached the Top of the Mountain near the four faces of the Presidents, where they hung out a large flag, with the Words, "SIOUX INDIAN POWER." And After a Brief ceremony, they renamed the Mountain "Crazy Horse Mountain" in Honor of the Famous war chief "Crazy Horse."
The Principal Leaders of the Invasion were: Lehman Brightman, National President of (U.N.A.) Dennis Banks, Executive Director of (A.I.M), Russell Means, the Leader of the Cleveland (A.I.M.) group and Carrol Swan, who helped coordinate the whole affair. Once all 23 members had reached the top and assembled, they proceeded to Establish a camp and an occupation that would last for approximately three months, or until Severe winter weather forced the withdrawal.
The incredible story behind this invasion and Occupation started five days earlier, when the local Sioux Indian people from Rapid City, South Dakota and the surrounding reservations established picket lines at the base of the monument. But after four days and nights of demonstrations the park authorities were not only not listening, but seemed to think the whole thing was a big joke. That is until the local People invited out of state Indians and National Indian Organizations to Aid them in their heroic endeavor. After taking the mountain and occupating it for a period of ten days or more, most of the college students and others were forced to return to school or their jobs, but by then the movement had caught on and Indian People from Across South Dakota were visiting the Mountain bring Food and Water and Replacing the original invaders by two fold. This was the First Indian uprising in South Dakota since the Sioux Wiped Out Custer in 1876, and suddenly young and old alike were taking new faith, Indians were Fighting Back. During the Second day of the Occupation the park authorities sent a message they wanted to talk with the leaders of the group to determine what they wanted and how long they intended to stay, Lehman Brightman replied, "as long as the grass grows, the water flows and the sunshine's," which didn't seem to please them much.

Reports from the May 6, 2009 International Day of Action: "No Toxic Dump or Border Wall on O'odham Lands!"
http://www.tiamatpublications.com/O_S_P_May6_2009_Protests.html
Reports from the May 6, 2009 International
Day of Action: "No Toxic Dump or Border Wall on
O'odham Lands!"
Activists in San Francisco, Phoenix and Tucson hold solidarity protests in
support of the traditional O'odham urging an immediate hault to the plans for
a toxic dump near the O'odham sacred site of Quitovac as well as a hault to
the building of the border wall across O'odham lands
May 6, 2009 Phoenix Report:
Our collective made up of o'odham youth , anarchists, environmentalists and
our legal observer arrived at Indian Steele Park at 9:30am. We decided to
take a traditional approach with our action, and planned on doing a spiritual
run from the park, to the Mexican consulate. Myself and brother ran with the
March 28 resolution, and planned on presenting it to the Consulate General
on arrival.
After traditional opening, we ran roughly 5miles to the consulate. Where on
arrival, were met by the rest of the collective, and marched through the
consulate to met with the Consulate General. We were able to get to his
office, but were only met by his secretary. Where at that time, our collected
already posted up in his office with our banner. We simply asked for the
general, or any high ranking-representatives, so we could present the
resolutions, and to sing a traditional o'odham song. At that time, the
secretary panic, and other low-level consulate representatives came in to
disrupt our action. As well as calling 911.
They denied our resolutions and asked us to leave. They told us they would
talk to ONE member of our collective and told us to come back in 5minutes.
So we left the premises and posted up on the sidewalk. While peacefully
standing on the sidewalk, 1 Homeland Security car, and 5 Phoenix Police
cars came in. As well as the consulate security guards surrounding the
entrance. Phoenix Police approached us, and told us if we return to the
consulate's grounds, we could be arrested for trespassing.
The consulate officials lied, and had no intention on meeting back up with
us. So we decided to end the action, with traditional songs.
The action roughly ended around 11am.
We had 11 people.
Thank all that supported.
Thomm'mie
May 6, 2009 San Francisco Report:
We had a great action here today!
Started at 2 p.m. with a delegation meeting with Mexican Consulate officials
who agreed to communicate our concerns and questions to the Mexican
government. They gave us some nonsense about the President of Mexico
caring so much about the environment, and we pointed out that in that case
he should quickly protect Quitovac and O’odham lands from toxic waste and
desecration. But they agreed to get back to us, including finding out when the
federal and state permits issued a few years ago to CEGIR expire. These
officials were very aware of the day’s actions in Phoenix and Tucson , so this
confirms that the Mexican government definitely was paying attention.
At 3 p.m. we began a picket in front of the Consulate, with a prayer said by
Quanah Brightman to start things off.
We had 50 people at the action, very diverse, including a lot of youth.
Lots of chants in English and Spanish, then a speak-out in solidarity with the
O’odham.
At 3:50 we began the march by taking over a lane of traffic and marching and
chanting our way to the US EPA office.
As we approached, lots of police and “Homeland Security” cops were there,
as were two US EPA officials waiting for us in front of the building. We
presented our demands to the EPA, as set forth in the March 28th resolution
adopted in Quitovac.
We blocked the traffic in front of the US EPA building for a few minutes, and
rallied in the street for about 30 minutes.
It was a strong, spirited action and we reminded both the Mexican consulate
and US EPA that “we will be back” if we have to.
We had some media including a Spanish language radio station, El

May 6, 2009 Tucson Report:
We met at Dry River Collective Resource Center at 11:00 a.m.
We arrived with our posters and set up at the Mexican Consulate gate on 553 S. Stone Ave. in Tucson .
Total of 25 people all together, people came and left throughout the Noon and 2:45.
At our arrival a Tucson Police cruiser drove back and forth then parked on the south side of the Consulate Office.
The police remain there until we dispersed at 2:45 P.M. We gave him a information flyer. Our person stated that we were not going to
storm the gates. The policeman said I didn't think we were.
The Consulate Office gates were locked. Every time a person arrived at the gate to conduct business,
someone would come out with a key to unlock the gate and ask their business then allow them entry.
Julian Etienne Gomez-Baranda, Aux.Pernsa- IME Culturales from the Mx Consulate Office came out to talk to me.
I gave him a copy of our Resolution from Quitovac.
He said that the gate was locked due to the protest members in Phoenix who entered their offices. I asked the if the young people
were arrested. He said he would call for infomation and let me know.
Later he came out to tell me that demonstrators at the Consulate in Phoenix were asked to leave the office and no one was arrested.
Thank you everyone for your support.
