Shelton family finds cross with nooses in front of home

Shelton family finds cross with nooses in front of home

A Native American family found a three-foot cross with three nooses hanging
from it in front of their home on Thursday, April 29, 2010.

SHELTON, Wash. - Police are investigating a disturbing display outside a home
belonging to a Native American family.

Someone left a three foot cross with three nooses hanging from it in the
front yard of Norman Johnson's home. The cross was inscribed with the message,
"cursed ... the Johnson family." They also slashed the tires on the family
car.

The Johnsons think they know who's behind it. The family has a restraining
order out against someone they say has been harassing their daughter. Johnson
urged his family to stay strong.

"I can't let something like this say like we're gonna go into a shell. That's
not the case. I said . we're above this. Anybody who does this is a plain up
coward," said Johnson.

Johnson is a Tlingit Indian, but police are
stopping short of calling it a hate crime. For now, they're investigating it as
felony harassment.
