Please ask your support network to call Fed. Bureau of Prisons Director Thomas Kane, at 202-307-3198, to request that Mr. Peltier be returned to general population. The e-mail address for Director Kane is info@bop.gov, if supporters want to write, as well as call.

FYI: This is a very important topic that needs more exposure andconcern. EMR ElectroMagneticRadiation is usually invisible, odorless, silent and hard to notice at all unless you are one of thosepeople who are sensitive to EMR. Inform yourself and take action tostop the spread of this great harm to health and Life in yourcommunity. Children are especially at risk.

Cell phones are becoming more notorious for their carcinogenicproperties. Those microwave towers are dangerous. Thisarticle is very credible and informative.

THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF ELECTROPOLLUTION
Regulators Ignore Health Impact
as EMF Radiation Invades Canada
by Helke Ferrie
Vitality, April 2011

"The good news is that many of these EMF diseases may bepreventable by simple environmental manipulation, if society chooses topay attention. Unless public outrage intervenes, I am afraid thatour ‘diseases of civilization' will get worse. Good science is notenough to force sensible public policy. Only citizens can dothat."
Dr. Samuel Milham in Dirty Electricity, 2010
"This device emits electromagnetic radiation, exposure to which maycause brain cancer. Users, especially pregnant women and children, shouldkeep it away from the head and body."
Currently proposed legislation for cell phones: Bill LD 1014, sponsoredby Legislator Andrea Boland in Maine, USA.

Ignorance may or may not be bliss, but one thing is certain: it is veryprofitable. According to Buddhism, all suffering derives from ignorance, and it rarely hurts until it is too late; ignorance keys into theaddictive potential in all of us and, thereby, allows somebody to make ahuge pile of money on enslavement.
The detrimental health effects of cell phones, WiFi, electromagneticfields (EMFs), and the microwave-based technology we use daily makesworrying about our kids experimenting with drugs, sexual escapades, alcoholic binges, or a touch of crime insignificant - in comparison to the WiFi-equipped school you send them to, the cellphones you may have bought for them, the hours they spend in front of theTV (forget the content – the TV itself is worse), and the microwave ovenfrom which they often receive their meals. Sex, booze, drugs, and crimeare part of the dark side of life's education: one often learns fromthose mess-ups to go on to make healthy choices. Now consider that this"progressive" and seductive radiation technology has the powerto obliterate life, phase out our biological future, and kill thebrain.
I am one of those suckers seriously injured by cell phones. Oursolar-powered cottage on Manitoulin is far from phone lines; so, for 25years we used public phones. Last summer, a cell phone tower was erected1 mile from my study window. Being a social animal, I thought this wasfabulous! Over a period of two months I quickly developed indescribableheadaches, piercing pains in my right eye, and spontaneous bleeding frommy right ear. My ophthalmologist diagnosed two cataracts in myright eye: the hallmark of microwave radiation injury ( age-relatedcataracts appear in both eyes), as we know from research begun on WW IIU.S. Navy personnel injured by radar equipment. In a future Vitalityissue I will discuss the successful treatment I am undergoing and how Idid not turn into a Luddite.
I am in stellar company: World Health Organization Director General, GroHarlem Brundtland (1998 – 2003) and convener of the World Commission onEnvironment and Development in 1987, did not permit any cell phones atWHO's Geneva headquarters because they caused her debilitatingheadaches. Of course, she had the wrath of the industry descendupon her accordingly. She is currently suffering from cancer.
In 2004, the WHO defined electrohypersensitivity (EHS) as: "… aphenomenon where individuals experience adverse health effects whileusing or being in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic,or electromagnetic fields …. a sometimes debilitating problem[occuring] several orders of magnitude under the limits ofinternationally accepted standards."
In fact, everybody is at risk. Epidemiologist Dr. Sam Milham firststudied childhood leukemia clusters in the 1970s that eventually provedbeyond any doubt that the risk for this disease is directly related tothe presence of powerlines, and subsequently also cell phone towers;those areas of the world that have little or no electricity have almostno incidence of leukemia. In addition to leukemia, evidence now supportsthat cell phones cause especially brain tumors, cancer of the eye, salivary glands, testicles, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and Alzheimer's. Thisradiation also contributes to the development of autism and ADHD. Whileseveral causes are known for all of these conditions, research hasconfirmed that the use of cell and cordless phones and lap-top computers, speed up their manifestation such that people in their 30's are nowbeginning to be diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's. The degranulationprocess of live brain cells when exposed to cell phone radiation has beenexperimentally demonstrated. Cancer incidence is also significantlyhigher within 400 meters of a cell phone tower or transmitter site. TrentUniversity researcher Magda Havas may now have discovered a third type ofdiabetes caused exclusively by electromagnetic radiation.
The most vulnerable are children, pregnant women, human brains ingeneral, testicles, and ovaries. This was confirmed in 2007 by the WorldHealth Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancerand in 2010 by a Swedish government study, all showing that cell phoneuse increases the chances of brain cancer by 40%. Last year, the EuropeanJournal of Oncology reported that serious heart and related problems(e.g. arrhythmia, palpitations, heart flutter, racing heart beat, fainting, profuse sweating etc) can occur to pulsed radiation as low as0.5% of the existing Canadian and US federal guidelines which permit 10mill micro/Wm2. The truly science-based exposure guidelines demonstratethat nobody should be exposed to more than 1 microW/m2.
When it comes to any type of death industry, the most reliableinformation comes from the military. On the websitewww.safeschool.ca you can download a recently declassified US Navy document from1971 whichsummarizes the more than 2,300 studies on the health effects frommicrowave radiation known way back then! Of course they knew – microwavetechnology was already part of the military arsenal intended to inflictbodily harm. It is the Military University in Germany that developed EMFprotection standards for civilian building codes. In addition to people, building materials require protection from rapid corrosion caused byradiofrequencies and microwaves. In 2008, the Federation of CanadianMunicipalities asked the federal government for an emergency fund of $123 billion over 5 years to avoid building collapse.
The financial problems caused by this irresponsible application ofradiation-based technology includes agriculture and cows. Plants avoidhigh EMF levels by not growing as high as they normally would; when theEMF source is removed, they grow normally. As reported by Dr. Milham, when the "dirty electricity" was neutralized by Graham/Stetzerplugs in a U.S. school, "a dairy farmer a quarter of a mile awaynoticed that his cows each gave an average of ten pounds more milk perday, beginning the day the school received its filters. The cowswere responding to dirty electricity being removed from the groundcurrents." In 2008 the French court ordered a power company tocompensate cattle farmers for EMF damage.
A thoroughly depressing fact is that the main reason gorillas in Africawere reduced in numbers by 90% over the past two decades is because theirhabitat was destroyed by miners for a rare mineral called coltan. Thismineral is apparently indispensable to the production of cell phones. Theinternational efforts to save the gorillas is appearing to have somesuccess, but nothing has happened so far, it seems to rescue the minersthemselves – they are primarily children even as young as 6 years.
Living creatures are electrical beings able to function only withinspecific frequencies. Devra Davis observes: "The difference betweenbeing alive and being dead is just one thing – the presence of electricalactivity in the brain." Thoracic surgeon Dr. William Rae, theco- founder of the American Academy for Environmental Medicine with LinusPauling and Dr. Thoren Randolph, became originally interested inenvironmental influences on health when he himself became seriouslyEMF-sensitive in the 1970's from operating room equipment. His researchled him to recognize the deleterious influence of pesticides and manyother environmental toxins, all of which cause multi-system damage. Theimmune system is the primary target which does its job throughelectrically charged biological substances such as neurotransmitters, hormones, and peptides which transmit faster than the speed of light. Ithas been known since the 1990's that environmental illness frombiological toxins and electrohypersensitivity share the process of adisastrous reduction in the nervous system enzyme cholinesterase. It'ssudden depletion cause depression and also suicidal behavior.
All these biological processes have their inherent timing, repair anddefensive responses, especially during pregnancy and brain development.Hence, the industry "safety" standards, with which governmentregulators collaborate, are totally absurd. Devra Davis explains: Theyare based on the imaginary SAM, the Standard Anthropomorphic Man based onmilitary recruits of 1989: six foot two tall, about 200 lbs, and neverexposed to a cell phone. The subsequently constructed safetystandards date to 1962 when nobody knew the difference betweenheat-producing radiation and microwave radiation, and cell phones did notexist.
The Safe School Committee in Collingwood(www.safeschool.ca) is fighting the WiFi craze that has hit Canadianschools. Even though WiFi is slower than landline-transmittedconnections, and even though there is a documented 40% increase incardiac arrest in children under 13 years directly related to this typeof radiation, the Toronto School Board is hell-bent on WiFi for allschools – presumably until no brains are left to zap. So eager are ourguardians of education to implement what they call "Vision ofHope" (abysmally black humor unintended), they even exceed thetotally inappropriate safety standards set by Health Canada – standardsthat date from a time when wireless phones were Dick Tracey-type sci-fiwatches.
Ken Dryden expressed outrage on March 12 (Globe & Mail) about thelack of mandatory protection from head injuries in hockey, stating:"How could we be so stupid!" Such outrage applies to WiFi inschools even more because even more children – all of them in fact – willbe affected. In a 2009 review of the usually irreversible harm EMFscause, neuroscientists O. Johansson of the Karalinska Institute inSweden, wrote: "Today no-one would consider having a radio-activewrist watch with glowing digits (as you could in the 1950s), having yourchildren's shoes fitted in a strong X-ray machine (as you could in the1940s), keeping radium in open trays on your desk (as scientists could inthe 1930s), or X-raying each other at your garden party (as physiciansdid in the 1920s). In retrospect that was just plain madness. However, the persons doing so were not …less intelligent. … knowledge wasdeficient, as was a competent risk analysis coupled to a parallelanalysis of public needs."
What is happening in other jurisdictions? In 2007, Germany initiate apolicy of reducing the use of CAT scans because of their demonstratedcancer-causing properties, and because their use increased health carecosts (directly and through additional cancer incidence) by 80% in 40years. It followed logically that last year Germany banned the energyefficient CFLS light bulbs because their carcinogenic radiation exceedsEuropean exposure limits. (I tossed all ours and put old-fashionedincandescent bulbs back; I found that the crushing fatigue I thought wasaging mysteriously disappeared!) Many jurisdictions in the US arenow framing legislation to deal both with the bulb's unacceptable levelsof radiation and the difficulty of their disposal because of the highmercury content threatening the ground water.
The European Union's September 2009 report on EMFs stressed the"serious and irreversible damage to health and environments"from EMF radiation and called on all member states to take precautionaryaction. Shortly afterwards the possibility of outlawing the use of cellphones for children under 18 was discussed in the EU parliament.
The UK, whose national Department of Health is as industry-friendly andscience-challenged as our Health Canada, started to surrender to realityand on March 11 advised its citizens that they should text, rather thanput their cell phones to their ears.
Switzerland, Finland, Luxemburg, and Austria supply their schools withthe totally radiation-safe fiber-optic technology for their internet andcommunication needs. Israel has similar legislation in the works. Thosecountries also set the maximum level of exposure between 5 to 10microW/cm2. Recall: In Canada we are told 1,000 microW/cm2 is"safe". Guess on which part of the Earth human brains willsurvive!
Meanwhile, we are also being threatened with "smart meters"which tend to increase electricity costs for people and expose them tomassive amounts of radiation. As of February of this year, Californiaallows people to refuse their installation, because a formalinvestigation showed that these US-made devices never passed all themandatory regulatory hurdles, are hazardous to health, and can causefire.
Devra Davis in her superb book "Disconnect" explains how themost serous practical challenge to this industry comes from the world'slarge insurance companies, such as the Sterling Group of Lloyd's ofLondon. Having nearly been nearly wiped out when the asbestos-relatedclaims became undeniable in the early 1990s, the cell-phone industry wasinformed they would not be backed when radiation hits the fan, as itmust. The trigger for this decision was the UK's 2005 Stewart Commissionwhose chair, citing worldwide research demonstrating harm tochildren's brains from cell phones, told the mobile phone industry to"refrain from promoting the use of mobile phones bychildren". In Canada, liability is certainly worth testing incourt, because the 2007 Human Rights Commission report on EnvironmentalIllness specifically included harm from EMF radiation as being real andrequiring accommodation.
Hear Magda Havas, Devra Davis and many others at the Total Health Show(April 8,9,10) and learn that, amazingly, it may be possible to be safeand have your toys.

(DAILY KOS ) Warning: the information below is likely to make your blood boil.

A hate crime happened a few weeks ago in Fernley , Nevada that is just becoming known to the wider public. A family has lost its car, is bankrupt and cannot return to their home because of it.

You should know about it. When you do, you will want to take action. At the end, there is a change.org petition, information for press contacts, and a Facebook Page where you can find more information and express your solidarity. Please leave any other ideas you may have in the comments.

It all happened when Johnny, Lisa and Alyssa Bonty, and their son-in-law, all from the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, stopped at the Quick Stop to get some gas in Fernley NV on May 24th. The rest is below the fold.

According to Indian Country Today, this is what happened:

The Attack

Johnny Bonta got out of the car to pump some gas when a carload full of skinheads pulled up alongside him. One of them got out of the car with a baseball bat and tried to pick a fight. Johnny told him he didn’t want to fight and got back into the car. The family then drove off, with his son-in-law, Shane Murray, behind the wheel. But now the skinheads were in pursuit.

As the Bonta family was heading for the freeway ramp, the skinheads cut them off and jammed on the brakes, causing a crash. The three skinheads then all got out of their car with baseball bats, knives and a crowbar and attacked the family.

Here’s how Lisa Bonfa described the vicious assault that followed:

“They all jumped out of the car with baseball bats, knives and a crowbar, and we knew they were going to hurt us,” said Lisa Bonta, in an interview from Washoe Medical Center, where she was in treatment for seizures she suffers….snip…[even though this happened at 1pm, nobody passing by would stop to help them]…

“I saw one of them hit my husband in the head with a bat, and the other one was trying to cut off his braid with a knife. Johnny was covered in blood and they just kept hitting him with a crow bar. They even tried to slit his throat,” she added.

“Jacob Cassell had my son-in-law on the ground in a chokehold and Shane was turning blue. My daughter was sobbing ‘they’re killing him’ and somehow she found the strength to hit Jacob in self-defense so he would release Shane.”

It was then, Lisa said, that Cassell turned his anger on her and her daughter, jumping on the hood of their car while swinging a baseball bat and cursing at them.

“I’m a 46 year-old woman with serious health problems, and I tried to defend myself, but he hit me across the lower back with his bat, calling us ‘niggers and river monsters,” said Lisa, who is Anglo. “He pointed at Alyssa and said he would rape her the next time he saw her in Fernley, where she lives.”

Johnny was knocked out by the bat, which had broken his nose and sinus cavities.

Turns out that Jacob Caswell’s father is a police officer in town, and after they tired of assaulting the family, Caswell taunted them with that fact:

“You hear those cops coming? They’re not going to help you. My daddy is a cop in this town, and nothing is going to happen to me. You fucking niggers are going to jail.”

The Police Response

And sure enough, the police arrive and they DON’T TAKE ANY STATEMENTS FROM THE VICTIMS, JUST THE SKINHEADS!!!! They completely ignored the family until Lisa suffered a seizure.

This despite the fact that Johnny had a broken nose, nasal cavity, and could barely stand from being hit with the bat. Shane had a crushed elbow and a broken hand, among other things.

Three ambulances responded arrived on the scene and took Lisa, Murray and Alyssa for medical treatment. Lisa assumed Johnny had been taken in another ambulance, but he had not.Johnny was taken to jail and received NO medical attention for SIX days!!!!!!!

“Why?” you ask?

First they told Lisa that he had an outstanding $367 fine.

When the family arranged to pay it, they charged Johnny with battery with a deadly weapon, even though he had NO weapon.

The police wouldn’t even let in an IHS doctor to treat Johnny in the jail. He only got medical attention after tribal police pursued his release, six days later.

The family also lost its car in all of this, and the police would NOT help them locate it, even though they were the ones who towed it. TWO WEEKS later they finally found it in a small impoundment yard, with its tires flat.

The family cannot afford to get the car out since Johnny was out of work due to his injuries. Family members now are walking to their doctors’ appointments.

The Brag on Facebook

These morons always have to brag. They incriminate themselves, that is if anyone’s listening (or, in this case, reading):

Two hours after attacking the Bontas, Josh Janiszewski of Fernley wrote, “Just laid the fists and boots to some 6′ 5” tongan dude. what you got on little guys?” at 3:13 p.m. When asked if they gave them hell, Josh responded. “Oh we did. That’s for sure!” at 3:48 p.m. “Amen,” said Jacob Cassell at 4:07 p.m.Jacob’s mother Dee Cassell also commented, “So…who has blood? You guys need to come home to mom?” at 4:48 p.m. She later added that she gave them First Aid. “Better have ur asses at home after I did 1st aid. Don’t piss off women – they r worse than men!” she wrote at 8:00 p.m.

When asked if they got “some good licks” in, Josh said, “sent em to the hospital, they got fucked up man, thats for sure.”

The Pattern

Since this crime occurred, the family has found out that skinheads have attacked other Native American families in nearby towns as well, but nobody reports the crimes because they feel the police won’t help them. AND THEY’RE RIGHT!!!!!

FBI Investigation

I was relieved to learn at the end of the article that the FBI is investigating this as a hate crime, and has taken statements from the family. The Justice Department should also be investigating the Fernley police department as well, but the article doesn’t provide any information on that.

The family has contacted the ACLU and is trying to get a lawyer through them.

For more information:

The story has also been covered byForbes blog (!),and RT, which originally drew attention to the situation.

UPDATE (Monday): Credit where credit is due. Brenda Norrell at Censored News, was the first one to cover this. We find out in that article that the attackers also attempted to slit Bonta’s throat, which is attempted murder. Brenda also reported on the complicity of the Reno Gazette Journal, which copied police tactics of NOT INTERVIEWING THE VICTIMS!!!! (one thing you may want to do is write a complaint to the editor – just go to the link), and wrote about the Facebook bragging. You can also listen to an interview Brenda did with Lisa over at Blogtalk Radio.

Tiokasin Ghosthorse also interviewed the family live on First Voices Indigenous Radio, broadcast over WBAI Thursdays at 9am EST, on July 9. The archives from that interview aren’t on the website yet, but I’m expecting them to be.

What you can do to help.

If your blood hasn’t boiled all away at this point there are a couple of things you can do to help.

UPDATE (Sun 5:15pm EST): It seems that there’s just one Chip In over at the Facebook page and it’s just for $50 to someone we don’t know. There is now a bank account set up to help the family.

Here’s the address you can send your checks to:

To help the Bontas:

There is an account set up at US Bank.

1. There is a petition over at Change.org that you can sign. That’s a no-brainer.

2. A Facebook page has been created to help the family. There is a link on it to donate, and you can also leave words of support (and please do). The FB page also shows that the story is getting some attention over at reddit, so if you can add to this, please do as well.

3. There’s also a Facebook page aimed at Burning Man attendees – apparently Fernley is on the way to BM festivities, and people are pledging not to spend money there. Interesting action. Like it.

4. A woman named Karen over on the FB page also provided a list of contacts. I thought it was good, so here it is:

Associated Press, Reno Bureau:
Governor Sandoval: http://nv.gov/…
Petition calling for investigation: http://www.change.org/…
Lyon County Sheriff: http://www.lyon-county.org/…

5. Thanks for this suggestion: you can also report this to theSouthern Poverty Law Center for investigation. Morris Dees is a hero. If they pay attention to the story, things tend to change.

If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please leave them in the comments.

I also wanted to add that this kind of virulent racism and violent behavior goes on around reservations throughout the country, not just the southwest. I sat in on a tribal council meeting on the Standing Rock Reservation two summers ago, and was simply aghast at a group of former-UND students testifying about why they had dropped out. Tensions had been especially high during the mascot controversy (fueled by a racist donor who had given money for a sports arena only on condition that the name Fighting Sioux be retained) but it was common for the Lakota kids to be called “Prairie Niggers” (nope, no typos, that’s what I wrote) and otherwise be harassed. Sometimes things like eggs would be thrown at them. This story should be part of a larger expose of the racist behavior of people around the reservations in this country. Prior to getting involved with these issues, I just was not aware at all how sickeningly bad it is.

Subject: Fw: Chase forecloses on Oregon soldier
To: ournetworkII

Tell Chase: Don’t foreclose on soldier’s family

Dear Marcie,

In one month, soldier Aaron Collette will return from Iraq for two weeks’ leave. By the time he does, he won't have a home -- and neither will his family.

Tim Collette, Aaron's dad, did everything right. He put $100,000 down on his home in Bend, Oregon, when he purchased it in 2006.

In 2008, after the economic crisis devastated his small flooring and countertop business, Tim realized he needed a loan modification and went to Chase Bank for help.

Chase told him he had to miss two payments to qualify for a loan modification. But once Tim did that, they began foreclosure proceedings instead of helping him.

Local non-profit Economic Fairness Oregon has been helping Tim stand up to Chase, but they need a surge in public support right now to save his home. Please sign their petition to help Tim and his family keep their home.

Banks across the state -- and country -- are taking advantage of homeowners in Tim’s situation all the time. Economic Fairness Oregon is pushing state legislators to pass a bill that will address the housing crisis and help people like Tim stay in their homes.

In the meantime, Tim needs public support to pressure Chase to stop the foreclosure.

When news of this story broke earlier in June after Senator Merkley spoke about it on the Senate floor, Chase agreed to delay the foreclosure and told the press they'd work to find a solution for Tim and his family.

But as soon as media attention faded, Chase called Tim and rescheduled the foreclosure for August 9 -- just 10 days before Aaron returns from Iraq.

Every day that this issue is not resolved Aaron has to worry about his family and where they'll live even as he’s risking his life in Iraq.

Sign here to tell Chase that we're still watching and urge them to honor their promise to find a solution for the Collette family:

Vermont: MindControl Classes
It's no accident that manypeople are weak-willed, confused and easily swayed. A lot of moneyis spent on research to develop and apply methods of psychologicalwarfare, sometimes called mind control. The CIA did experimentsback in the 1950's trying out everything from drugs to hypnosis. This is well documented in John Marks book, "In Search of theManchurian Candidate".
Modern methods of mind control include machines that can read your mindand pharmacogenomics or designer drugs. Many of these incredibletechniques are secretively and furtively applied by militaries all overthe world, often against their own people.
Methods of mind control involving hypnosis can be described and used inapparently harmless and legal ways.
The below quotes are taken from an email ad put out the other day by theEricksonian Institute. Erickson was a hypnotist and hypnotherapistwho developed covert hypnotic methods. He proved that anybody canbe hypnotised and induced to do things they don't want to do. Hypnotism can be used for entertainment, therapy or for mind control, depending on the motivations of the hypnotist.
"Subject: Beliefs Change Class
"Belief Craft?" What's that all about?
"Did you ever meet somebody who expressed a belief about somethingand you thought, "Can he really BELIEVE that?" You may evenhave been left speechless.
"Have you ever been in a situation maybe as a salesperson or as atherapist where you are diligently trying to get your client to loosentheir hold on an old, stuck way of thinking and to persuade them of abetter, healthier viewpoint and they JUST WON'T BUDGE?
"These are examples of where REALLY understanding the nature ofbeliefs would save the day.
""BELIEF CRAFT" is a merging together of two disciplines,"Sleight of Mouth" and "Knowledge Engineering."Basically taking the most useful understanding of how beliefs arestructured (derived from the computer science of Artificial Intelligence,"Knowledge Engineering") and combining it with the mostsophisticated understanding of how beliefs are changed ("Sleight ofMouth").
"The results are game changing.
"Jonathan Altfeld and I will be presenting a three day certificationclass in Belief Craft July 7, 8 and 9, 2011 up in Burlington, Vermont asthe kick-off to our summer NLP Master Practitioner Class (July 7-17,2011)
Read more about it here:http://www.altfeld.com/mastery/seminars/desc-belcraft.html"
When you go to the page, there's piles more, written in a moreintimate style that seeks to draw you in:
"Dear NLP Enthusiast,... You're about to discover a new, provenblend to:
"Change minds covertly WITHOUT raising suspicions or defenses; They'll never see it coming, and they'll be agreeing with your positionand nodding their heads before you've finished talking...You'll havethese techniques mastered, ready-to-unleash, by the conclusion of thistraining."
No kiddin. That's really what they're saying and what's worse, someone is buying it. And worse yet, maybe it does work. Something is clearly working on all the sheeple and followers ofnonsense.
This isn't just about salesmanship on the job but could be appliedanywhere:
"Mysteriously convince romantic prospects why you actually AREtheir type. Warning: you may be so flooded with opportunities, rememberto exercise responsibility and discretion."
This sounds like the 21st century version of "How to Win Friendsand Influence People":
"Amaze your Peers with your mystifying and high-impact VerbalWizardry; Yes, your verbal magic tricks will sound cool, but moreimportantly, your friends will 'wake up' with changedminds."
Then the NeuroLinguisticPractitioners give some examples of successstories. Here's one:
"Everyone used to believe the world was flat. And that preventedexploration for thousands of years. Until Christopher Columbus believeddifferently than everyone else.
"One man reached inside and grasped the Power of his Belief -- ashis only real motivation for risking his life and reputation... andproved the entire world wrong. "
We've got news for these guys. We Indigenous have always knownthe world was a globe. Only medieval Europeans under the influenceof the Roman Catholic Church believed the world was flat. Andanyone who pays $895 to go to one of these seminars has got to be livingin Flatland. This one will be held Thursday - Saturday, July 7-9,2011. 9am - 9pm at the Best Western Windjammer Inn & ConferenceCenter, 1076 Williston Road, South Burlington, Vermont.

From the Eagle Watch #154
Mining the Wind: Who Would've Thunk It??
Detailed Report
June 16, 2011

In the early days after Contact, we Indigenous were shocked when theColonizers wanted to sell the land from under us. We objectedvigourously. To us Real and Original People/Nishnaabe/Ongwehonweh,the land contains the bones and dust of our ancestors. It is not tobe sold but the Newcomers sold it anyway. Then they wanted to sellthe water. We were shocked and we objected. We continue toobject but they are doing it anyway. Now they want to sell thewind. We were shocked and now we are objecting. Who would'veever thought the wind would become such an issue?
Over the past few weeks, we at the Eagle Watch, have scoured the internetfor information on industrial wind turbines. There's lots out thereand quite a growing debate.
We profiled two wind developers, Prowind and Horizon Wind Inc, both ofwhom want to set up wind "farms" in Ontario. What amisnomer! It's more like mining with all the associated damage andpollution.
There are many other big wind developers but these two aretypical.

TWO CORPORATIONS INVADE TWO COMMUNITIES
With growing opposition to wind turbines being placed near people'sdwellings, the promoters will be looking for more places to put them inthe bush, that is on Indigenous communities. Watch out for thatterm, "remote location". It usually means dumping theirtoxic and wasteful projects on our land, on our doorstep, in ourface. They don't care how it harms us. They presume to actwith impunity because they get away with it all the time.
Two well known environmental organizations, Greenpeace and the SierraClub SUPPORT the mega wind projects. Some people are surprised andoutraged about this. We have long been aware of the self-servinghypocrites who shelter under the banner of Environmentalists. Manyenvironmentalists support depopulation.
How much space does one wind turbine need?
"The GE 1.5-MW turbine, with a 70.5-m rotor span, thereforerequires at least 48 acres per tower in a single line perpendicular tothe wind (32 acres/MW) or 123 acres per tower in an array (82 acres/MW).Each Vestas V90 1.8-MW turbine, with a 90-m rotor, requires 78-200 acres(43-111 acres/MW). Tom Gray of the American Wind Energy Association haswritten, "My rule of thumb is 60 acres per megawatt for wind farmson land."
Horizon aka Horizon Legacy Energy Corporation aka Horizon WindInc. aka Horizon Wind Limited Partnership and Big Thunder Windpark Inc.,aka Big Thunder Windpark Limited Partnershp
vs
Fort William First Nations and the City of Thunder Bay
Toronto based, private firm, Horizon Legacy Energy Corp. wants to putup about 20 wind turbines on the Fort William First Nation Nishnaabeterritory pristine wilderness outside Thunder Bay Ontario, not far fromthe US border.
The Fort William First Nations community is home to about 1500people. The colonial puppet Band Council signed an agreement in2007 with Horizon Wind. The Nishnaabe people were notinformed. They were not consulted and did not give theirconsent.
Thunder Bay already signed some deal with Horizon who are now sueing thecity for $126million for reasons that are not clear. Many ThunderBay residents now vigourously oppose the wind project.
Horizon president and CEO Anthony Zwig was in for a real surprise on May30, 2011 when the Fort William Nishnaabe filled their community hall tooppose the destructive wind project. They had a lot of questionsfor Tony and they had plenty to say to him.
On June 1, a letter written by a Fort William Nishnaabe appeared in theNetNewsLedger. In part, it reads:
"We, the Anishinabek peoples of Fort William First Nation, havehad most of our lands and much of our way of life taken from us bysettler society. Indeed, more than 8,600 acres of land has been taken bysettler society for settler projects since we established ourreserve. We are literally surrounded by lands that have beendestroyed by settler projects. Because of this, we live with all theproblems consistent with colonial oppression, including social, psychological, environmental and political pathologies. Due to thislegacy, WE WILL NOT GIVE ANOTHER INCH.
"The proposed location for the Big Thunder Wind Park is in primemoose habitat. Our reliance on moose for physical and spiritualsustenance depends on healthy moose habitat surrounding Loch Lomond lake.We have seen time and again that settler projects that meet provincialand/or federal standards do little to protect our sacred relationship tomoose and other animals. We gain our identity from relationships to ourlands and our animal relatives; though this relationship is hard forsettler society to understand, we are ready to protect it. We will notlet another settler project compromise moose habitat in our traditionalterritory..."
Tony "Huff and Puff" Zwig is a prominent and affluentToronto Jew and political Zionist. Tony is a philanthropist andpatron of the arts just like Murray Koffler, founder of Shoppers DrugMart and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business CCAB. Tonyand Walter Zwig and Murray and Tom Koffler are lifetime members of theboard of governors at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.(See endnotesfor more)

The Nor'Wester Mountain Escarpment Protection Committee opposes Horizon'sBig Thunder wind project in and near Thunder Bay. They will behosting a screening of the film, Windfall on Thursday June 23, 2011 atthe Community Auditorium in Thunder Bay.
Another concern to the Fort William Nishnaabe is a company called SkyPower putting in a 45,000 panel solar installation on Fort Williamterritory. The scale of such a project is also detrimental towildlife and people who depend on our relations for survival.

Prowind vs North Gower, Carleton Place, Brinston, South DundasTownship, United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, Shanly,Township of Edwardsburg-Cardinal, United Counties of Leeds &Grenville.
These settler communities are all on Ongwehonweh territory betweenthe Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers. Once productive farmland forearly settlers, the family farm today is an "endangeredspecies". Farmers struggle to earn a living from the soil.
Prowind is a German company with a Canadian subsidiary now based inHamilton, Ontario. Prowind has 16 wind projects all over Germanyand is now expanding into at least 8 other countries. This includesEngland, Ireland, Italy, France, Australia and Romania.
Johannes Busmann, a certified dairy farmer and lawyer, founded Prowind in2000. He knows how to talk to farmers. Prowind Canada is runby money-loving Cathy Weston, president and Juan K. Anderson, projectmanager and aerospace engineer. Prowind likes to start the projectand then sell it to someone more willing to deal with theheadaches.
A North Gower farmer agreed to rent his land to Prowind for some windturbines. Now, Prowind wants to sell the project to him. Prowind is trying to develop other wind projects in the area.
The resistance to the Prowind wind turbine installations is organizedunder the name, North Gower Wind Action Group (NGWAG) which is related toWind Concerns Ontario. These people are concerned about quality oflife and how wind turbines affect property values. NGWAG is hostingthe screening of Windfall on June 26 in North Gower, about 20 minutesoutside Ottawa.
THE PROBLEM WITH WIND TURBINES
The big wind projects cause a number of problems. Here's ourshort list of things we learned and then some more details about therelated health issues.
1. Wind turbines are extremely ugly to look at. We think thatBeauty should be a part of our Lifestyle. Wind turbines also causestrobing, flickering and reflection of sunlight that is a health issuefor some people. The wind turbines being built keep getting biggerand bigger.
2. Wind turbines make hideous noise, often loud and steady like aspeeding train that never arrives. It's hard on the nervesliterally. Wind turbines make infrasound which the human ear cannothear but the body feels it. People like airline pilots already getvibro-acoustic disease (VAD) from constant exposure to low frequencysound. Wind turbines emit electromagnetic radiation of variousfrequencies that can be harmful to health on a cellular level.
3. As more and more farmland is being used for wind turbines, developers are turning to the bush. They want to cut down trees andbuild more roads. Wind turbines need regular maintenance so theymust be easily accessible. This is destructive to all the creaturesand Life in the bush. It is murderous to Indigenous people who gettheir livelihood from the bush.
4. Wind turbines adversely affect birds, bats and othercreatures. The wind turbines on Wolfe Island and those proposed fornearby Amherst Island are located on the migratory routes of manythreatened and endangered bird species including raptors like the BaldEagle. The presence of the turbines causes the birds to avoid theselocations where they normally find food. The Kingston FieldNaturalists are studying this issue.
5. There are potential dangers of chunks of ice falling from windturbines or being flung great distances by the rotors. Anyone couldget hit. Fires are also possible and have happened. The windturbines contain plastics, resins and other substances that are verytoxic when burned.
6. The promoters of wind turbines always tell you they can power somany homes and produce so many mega watts. But do they? Wind is not a constant so it is impossible to predict how much wind willoccur during any given time frame. Just how efficient are theturbines at harnessing the wind's energy? A simple fact of physicsis that when electrictiy is produced in one place and transmitted toanother place, it loses power in the transmission.
7. There are security and communications concerns that the windturbines interfere with microwave transmission and radar including atairports. Why then this big industrial wind turbine facility goingup at Kingston Ontario, the east end of Lake Ontario near to the busyCanadian air force base and international airport, Trenton, less than anhour's drive to the west???
8. Proponents claim that industrial wind projects will providejobs. Beyond the construction, this does not appear to be true atall. A minimal number of technicians and mechanics maintain theturbines once in place.
9. In the end, the wind turbines with so many moving parts willbreak down into useless garbage in about 20 to 25 years. The steelrubble will lie with the crumbling concrete pads, motionless and quiet atlast. The emboldened animals will creep forward to examine thedebris. Plants will pop up and vines will creep over the miles ofwires, batteries, broken switches and plastic shards. People willshake their heads, amazed at how foolish their fellow humans canbe.

HEALTH STUDIES
Studies in England, Portugal and France where giant wind turbineshave been in place for several years, find that the reports of healthproblems are growing. It's the noise, vibration and strobing thatis making people sick and anxious.
British doctor, Amanda Harry has been gathering and analyzinginformation for about 10 years. She hears from people in Cornwall,Wales and Cumbria; from France, Germany, Denmark, Australia, New Zealandand the USA. She states, "the wind industry has taken itupon themselves to state that there isn't a problem without looking intothe issues further."
Dr. Nina Pierpont in NY State has been doing her part. She says, "Describing and documenting symptoms is the province ofphysicians. So is research on the causes of diseases. Deciding whetherpeople have significant symptoms is not within the expertise of engineersor specialists in acoustics, even when the symptoms appear to be causedby noise. We physicians appreciate the noise data which engineersprovide, but this data has nothing to do with whether people havesymptoms or not. One British acoustics expert, Dr. Geoff Leventhall, isespecially outrageous in this regard, insisting that people “can’t” havesymptoms because turbines “don’t,” he says, produce low frequency noise. His fallback, for which he is well paid by the industry, is that peoplemake up their complaints. But he’s not trained to distinguish whetherpeople are making up their complaints, or to know about the range ofphysical, psychiatric, and neurological symptoms people might have. Arelated point: the hallmark of a good doctor is one who takes symptomsseriously and pursues them until they are understood (and ameliorated). This includes symptoms related to the brain, our most complexorgan—symptoms which may be neurologic, psychiatric, or physical."
Three doctors that Pierpont knows of studying the Wind TurbineSyndrome are herself, one in England, and one in Australia. They note thesame sets of symptoms. The symptoms start when local turbines go intooperation and resolve when the turbines are off or when the person is outof the area.
Pierpont describes, "Sensitivity to low frequency vibration is arisk factor. Contrary to assertions of the wind industry, some peoplefeel disturbing amounts of vibration or pulsation from wind turbines, andcan count in their bodies, especially their chests, the beats of theblades passing the towers, even when they can’t hear or see them.Sensitivity to low frequency vibration in the body or ears is highlyvariable in people, and hence poorly understood and the subject of muchdebate."
Professor Mariana Alves-Pereira is part of a team ofphysicians and scientists studying the pathophysiology of low-frequencynoise and infrasound on humans at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. She is Assistant Coordinator of the Vibroacoustic Disease Project.Alves-Pereira and colleagues have been doing epidemiologic studies ofairline pilots and technicians and other people who are chronicallyexposed to low-frequency noise and infrasound. The effects are grim:cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, and renal pathology andsymptoms, which they call vibroacoustic disease (VAD).
*VAD is well established in the clinical literature. It has been amplydocumented and is readily detected by a variety of diagnostictests."
If you don't look at the evidence, you can say there is none. See more details in the Endnotes.
For the record, we are certainly opposed to nuclear reactors and thedeadly toxic weapon materials they produce. We are against the oilsands extraction and the destruction of the Athabasca watershed. Weknow that oil, gas and coal are dirty and cause health problems. Wehave previously written about the big Greenwash, the money grab and howthe big renewables are being developed by the same ole same ole corporateelitists. Alternative energy on a small scale is a goodidea.
The main solution as we see it is conservation and energyefficiency. We don't need more and more manufactured stuffincluding cell phones, hummers, bombs, guns and drones. Many of usneed to simplify our lifestyles and learn to use less, taking only whatwe need. We need to minimize waste.
In conclusion, it appears that there is growing opposition to big windturbine facilities as people get to understand what they are allabout. A new generation of Indigenous and settler people areforming alliances to fight these projects. Elders and Youth areworking together. It's not over til it's over. Never giveup!!

The Fort William First Nation Nishnaabe have a claim before theCanadian courts, cash compensation in exchange for land. Ourownership of the land is so different from these foreign concepts ofownership, it is like the difference between saying "my car"and "my mother".

It is the same possessive pronoun but a completely differentmeaning.
In its supreme arrogance, INAC writes, "In return for thiscompensation, the First Nation will provide Canada and Ontario withreleases to ensure the claim can never be re-opened. All ofthe parties agree that this settlement will bring closure for allconcerned."

HEALTH REPORTS
1) Amanda Harry's report has an interesting diagram which showsthe resonant vibration rate of different parts of the body which may beaffected by low frequency vibration. This is important informationfor people who are accused of imagining their symptoms or lying.
This report is posted all over the internet.
The Amanda Harry report: Wind Turbines, Noise and Health byDr. Amanda Harry
Report abstract:
"Wind turbines are large industrial structures that create obtrusiveenvironmental noise pollution when built too close to dwellings. Thisannotated review of evidence and research by experts considers the impactof industrial-scale wind turbines suffered by those living nearby. First, the paper includes the comments by some of the families affected by windturbines, as well as coverage in news media internationally. Theexperiences described put a human face to the science of acoustics.
Second, the paper reviews research articles within the field of acousticsconcerning the acoustic properties of wind turbines and noise. Theacoustic characteristics of wind turbines are complex and in combinationproduce acoustic radiation. Next, the paper reviews the health effectsthat may result from the acoustic radiation caused by wind turbines, aswell as the health effects from noise, because the symptoms parallel oneanother. Primarily, the consequent health response includes sleepdeprivation and the problems that ensue as a result. In addition, thispaper reviews articles that report research about the body's response notonly to the audible noise, but also to the inaudible components of noisethat can adversely affect the body's physiology. Research points to acausal link between unwanted sound and sleep deprivation and stress,i.e., whole body physiologic responses.
These injuries are considered in the context of Human Rights, where it iscontended that the environmental noise pollution destroys a person'seffective enjoyment of right to respect for home and private life, aviolation of Article 8 of the European Court of Human Rights Act.Furthermore, the paper considers the consequent devaluation of a dwellingas a measure of part of the damage that arises when wind turbines aresited too close to a dwelling, causing acoustic radiation and consequentadverse health responses..."
Similar problems have been found by Dr Bridget Osborne, a doctor in MoelMaelogan, a village in North Wales, where three turbines were erected in2002. She has presented a paper to the Royal College of GeneralPractitioners detailing a "marked" increase in depression amonglocal people."
Note: Dr. Osborne's paper was originally, and erroneously, reported ashaving been "presented to the Royal College of GeneralPractitioners". In May 2004, Dr Osborne confirmed that it waswritten "for the Royal College of General Practitioners North WalesFaculty Newsletter on the Physiological effects of Wind Turbines".

2) http://www.savewesternny.org/health.html
THERE IS A HUGE AMOUNT OF INFO AT THIS WEB SITE. WE HAVE ONLYTAKEN SNIPPETS FYI.
Health, hazard, and quality of life near wind power installations - Howclose is too close?: Nina Pierpont, MD, PhD March 1,2005..."Dizziness (specifically, vertigo) and anxiety areneurologically linked phenomena. Hence the anxiety and depression seen inassociation with other symptoms near wind installations are not aneurotic response to symptoms, but rather a neurologically linkedresponse to the balance disturbances people experience from shadowflicker or low-frequency noise... Based on these health effects andhazards, turbines should not be placed within 1700 feet of any road ordwelling. Those living within 1/2 mile (2640 ft) should be apprised thatthey are likely to experience very bothersome levels of noise andflicker, which continue (though to a lesser degree) to a mile or morefrom the turbines."
Pierpont's list of symptoms:
1) Sleep problems: noise or physical sensations of pulsation or pressuremake it hard to go to sleep and cause frequent awakening.
2) Headaches which are increased in frequency or severity.
3) Dizziness, unsteadiness, and nausea.
4) Exhaustion, anxiety, anger, irritability, and depression.
5) Problems with concentration and learning.
6) Tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Chronic sleep disturbance is the most common symptom. Exhaustion, moodproblems, and problems with concentration and learning are naturaloutcomes of poor sleep.

Dept. of Environmental Sciences & Engineering, New University ofLisbon, Caparica, Portugal, Professor Mariana Alves-Pereira (anacoustical engineer) and Dr. Nuno Castelo Branco (a surgical pathologist)recently took numerous noise/vibration measurements within a Portuguesehome surrounded by four (4) industrial wind turbines. The closest turbineis nearly 1000 feet (300 meters), from the affected home. The turbineshave been operating since November 2006. The report concludes:
"These results irrefutably demonstrate that windmills in theproximity of residential areas produce acoustical environments that canlead to the development of VAD vibro-acoustic disease in the nearbyhome-dwellers. In order to protect Public Health, ILFN-producing devicesmust not be placed in locations that will contaminate residential areaswith this agent of disease."
4) a report from the National Academy of Medicine in France, warning ofwind turbine noise.
Following is a translation of a notice of the report by Dr. ChantalGueniot in "Panorama du Médecin", 20 March 2006:
Wind turbines: The Academy Cautious
"The harmful effects of sound related to wind turbines areinsufficiently assessed, warns the Academy.
...
Studies conducted in the neighborhoods of airports have clearlydemonstrated that chronic invasive sound involves neurobiologicalreactions associated with an increased frequency of hypertension andcardiovascular illness. Unfortunately, no such study has been done nearwind turbines. But, the sounds emitted by the blades being low frequency, which therefore travel easily and vary according to the wind, theyconstitute a permanent risk for the people exposed to them.

More Notes fromhttp://www.savewesternny.org/health.html
The head of a powerful European committee on the environment hascalled for an independent inquiry into the health effects of windturbines. South West Conservative MEP Dr Caroline Jackson, who ischairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Environment, PublicHealth and Consumer Policy, says she will also be calling for EU researchfunding.
Flicker Induced Health Risks: Chatauqua County Citizens For ResponsibleWind..."There are two distinct types of flicker associated with windturbines. Shadow flicker arises as the shadow of the moving turbineblades moves across the ground. This type of flicker is most common whenthe sun is at a low angle in the sky, such as mornings and evenings inthe summer and just about any time in the winter. These shadows canextend great distances from the base of the turbine, particularly whenthe shadow is downhill from the turbines... The second type of flickerthat can arise from wind turbines is strobing. Strobing occurs whenturbine blades catch the sun and reflect it back towards the viewer.Since a turbine blade will be in the position where this reflection takesplace up to 60 times per minute (20RPM X 3 blades) the effect is like astrobe light. Strobing can occur at any time of day and can happenanywhere the turbines can be seen - especially from the south, east andwest.
He is also CEO and chairman of Swift River Energy Limited, ahydroelectric developer.
The most severe, though by no means the only health risk associated withshadow flicker and strobing is seizure. It is a known fact thatflickering or strobing light can cause seizure in susceptibleindividuals. Other risks due to flicker and strobing include headache, loss of balance, nausea and disorientation. Having a seizure is a severemedical issue but if that seizure, or for that matter disorientation, were to take place while a person was driving a car or operating farmequipment, it could be devastating to that individual and family."
Microwave interference and radar including airports
Wind Farms and their Effects on Public Safety Radio Systems: Summary:..."In many parts of the country, wind farms are being installed toalleviate the need to build more electrical generating plants. These windfarms can have a profound effect on your public safety, utility, andgovernmental microwave systems by chopping and reflecting the microwavebeam."
Ministry of Defence and Radar Interference: Humble Hill, Kielder...
"In the Spring 2000 edition of OpenView we featured an article aboutthe need to take account of military and civil radar interference fromwindfarms. Two projects (07-02Graigenlee Fell in Galloway and 08-07HumbleHill, Kielder Forest, Northumberland ) were mentioned and both have sincebeen rejected or withdrawn after MOD objections."
"..the Ministry of Defence objected to the original proposal on thegrounds that the wind turbines would interfere with primary and secondaryradar therefore impairing the effectiveness of the nearby SpadeadamElectronic Tactics Range (EWTR). In an effort to overcome the MOD'sobjection the Company reduced the number of wind turbines andreconfigured their location on the site. To this effect the Companysubmitted a variation to the application.........the MOD maintained theiroriginal objection, that is, a windfarm operating in the vicinity of theETWR would be unacceptable as the training facilities of the EWTR areunique and imperative for the front-line training of RAF crews. MODbelieve that the proposed windfarm would interfere both with radar andalso with low flying, creating an acute safety hazard to both to membersof the public and RAF crews. The MOD indicated that current studies havenot conclusively proved that the rotating action of wind turbine bladeshas no effect on ground and airborne radar. Therefore they rely on theirown research which concludes that wind turbines cause interference toprimary surveillance radar and also that detection and tracking ofaircraft flying over a windfarm is extremely difficult since theresponses between the aircraft and the turbine cannot bedistinguished."

Commercial Wind Power Plants will decimate our deer herd.
Bumblebee (Harmony Mountain) is, among other things, a nursery for muledeer. It is a perfect place for deer to give birth and raisetheir young. Once there is an increase in human activity, theharmful turbine sound, vibration, and shadow flicker, the deer will nolonger feel it is a safe place to raise their young. Theproposed roads will cut across the top of Bumblebee and impact thedeer. More roads built a higher kill ratio during huntingseason, resulting with further decimation of the deer population.

Native Graves Protection Act Subject of Hearing

Native Graves Protection Act Subject of Hearing
http://mauinow.com/2011/06/15/nagpra-graves-protection-act-subject-of-hearing/

A U.S. Senate Committee hearing today will examine the successes and barriers made to date in repatriating Native remains, funerary, sacred, and patrimonial objects.
The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold the oversight hearing on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) tomorrow afternoon.
Witnesses will explore how federal agencies and museums have progressed, and what additional policy considerations are necessary to ensure burial rights and protections for indigenous people.
U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii), the Chairman of the Committe, will host the hearing entitled: "Finding Our Way Home: Achieving the Policy Goals of NAGPRA."
NAGPRA provides a process for museums and Federal agencies to return certain Native American cultural items to lineal descendants, Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. The Act also establishes a committee to monitor actions, and facilitate the resolution of disputes involving repatriation.
Since its enactment in 1990, there have been over 40,000 human remains, 1.1 million funerary objects, 5,500 sacred objects, and 2,100 patrimonial objects found eligible for repatriation under NAGPRA by museums and Federal agencies in the U.S.
The hearing will also examine the implementation of the National Museum of American Indian (NMAI) Act, and its impact on the repatriation of Native American cultural items. The NMAI established the museum as part of the Smithsonian Institution, prescribing laws and procedures to govern repatriation.

Buffalo Field Campaign and Western Watersheds Project File to Intervene
in Lawsuit to Defend Bison's Room to Roam Beyond Yellowstone National Park

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 14, 2011
Press contacts:
Darrell Geist, Habitat Coordinator Buffalo Field Campaign: 406-646-0070; z@wildrockies.org
Jon Marvel, Executive Director Western Watersheds Project: 208-788-2290; jon@westernwatersheds.org
Lewistown
, MT: Buffalo Field Campaign and Western Watersheds Project filed today to intervene in consolidated lawsuits by Park County and the Park County Stockgrowers Association to stop a plan by the state of Montana to permit bison some room to migrate within Gardiner Basin outside Yellowstone National Park.
The groups say Gardiner Basin provides critical winter habitat and is a key corridor for the migratory species to roam in Montana.
"This reconnection of buffalo and the land on which they belong is a long overdue first step," said Daniel Brister, Executive Director of Buffalo Field Campaign. "Local Montanans welcome the buffalo's migration, have learned to live with buffalo, and desire to see the wild species return."
Gardiner Basin encompasses a small portion of the bison's northern winter range originally reaching 40 miles beyond Yankee Jim Canyon into Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River.
Park County residents who filed affidavits in state court say the bison need a break from wasteful taxpayer funded government hazing, capture, and slaughter operations that harms their interest in co-existing with the wild species in their native range.
"Yellowstone is one of a very few nearly intact ecosystems on the planet and is considered a world treasure," said Fred Baker, who owns property the bison migrate onto along the Old Yellowstone Trail. "To not support free roaming Bison in my opinion is an American travesty."
"I found this winter very special in viewing bison up and down the Gardiner Basin," said Gardiner, Montana resident Scott Hoeninghausen. "A limited amount of tolerance created an unlimited amount of beauty."
The plan agreed to by Montana would permit some bison to temporarily occupy some winter range in the Gardiner Basin.
Bison migrating beyond Yankee Jim Canyon would be subject to shooting by state officials, an action which the groups and residents deplore.
"It is long past time for bison to be able to return to their historic range in Montana," said Jon Marvel, executive director of Western Watersheds Project. "WWP welcomes the opportunity to support the State of Montana."
District Court Judge E. Wayne Phillips of Lewistown has scheduled a hearing for the consolidated cases in which BFC and WWP seek to intervene in the fall of 2011.
Judge Phillips replaced Park County District Court Judge Nels Swandal who was removed from the case after Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks petitioned for a new judge.
Before he was removed from hearing the suit, Judge Swandal granted a temporary restraining order to the stock growers and the county thwarting Montana participation in the new agreed upon plan.

Yukon First Nations want apology from truth panel

Yukon First Nations want apology from truth panel
Jul 11, 2011
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2011/07/11/trc-inuvik-yukon-apology.html?ref=rss

Yukon
First Nations want an apology from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the accommodations it offered to residential school survivors in Inuvik, N.W.T. last month.
More than 30 Yukon delegates attended the commission's national event in the Mackenzie Delta community, from June 28 to July 1, in the hopes of sharing their residential school experiences with the federally appointed panel.
But delegates claimed they were subjected to filthy, unsafe and uncomfortable accommodations that had broken windows, no telephones and dirty water.
"You didn't have soap, you didn't have towels," Jessie Dawson, a delegate from the Kwanlin Dun First Nation in Whitehorse, told CBC News.
"The difference between camping and staying in a place like this is when you go camping, you go prepared."
Unable to share experiences
In addition to the accommodation problems, Dawson said many Yukon delegates did not get to share their residential school experiences at the national event.
'Some of our citizens went up there [and] came back totally retraumatized.'—Grand Chief Ruth Massie
Dawson said three commission officials had promised to work on the accommodations.
"I said, 'OK, great, but start getting our elders out of these places.' We were also told they were going to rent us a vehicle with a cellphone, and also set up a meeting with the commissioners so some of the people can tell their stories," she said.
"None of that has, had happened."
Delegates to the Council of Yukon First Nations general assembly in Whitehorse last week passed a resolution demanding an apology from the commission.
"Some of our citizens went up there [and] came back totally retraumatized, so we have to deal with that and the support services for them," said Grand Chief Ruth Massie.
Seek funding for next event
The council's resolution asks the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to provide funding for Yukon delegates to attend the commission's next national event.
Dawson said the Yukon delegates deserve another opportunity to tell their residential school stories and to be treated with respect.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was formed by the federal government in 2008, around the same time a formal apology was issued in the House of Commons for the abuses aboriginal people suffered at residential schools.
A large part of the commission's mandate involves gathering statements from former students, through a combination of public hearings and private sessions.
The Inuvik event was the second national event to be hosted by the commission, which held its first major event in Winnipeg in June 2010. Similar gatherings will take place in Atlantic Canada, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan over the next four years

Vallejo City Council, American Indian tribes seek resolution

Vallejo City Council, American Indian tribes seek to resolve 'spiritual vigil' at park site
07/12/2011
http://www.timesheraldonline.com/ci_18460188

The
Vallejo City Council will meet with American Indian tribes this evening in closed session at City Hall to discuss the future of the disputed Glen Cove park site.

No final action is expected, although the Greater Vallejo Recreation District board is set to revisit park construction plans at its meeting on Thursday.

At issue is the proposed construction of a park on city land known to have contained Native American villages and burial grounds dating back to 1,000 A.D.

The Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation and Cortina Band of Wintun Indians are seeking permanent legal rights from the city to protect the land. Those talks, including how much money the tribes may pay the city, will continue tonight.

Demonstrators have occupied the 15-acre parcel at the end of Whitesides Drive for more than 12 weeks. The group has blocked GVRD's planned construction of bathrooms, trail, a parking lot and other amenities.

In a twist, the two federally recognized tribes, whose ancestral lands include the area around Glen Cove, have criticized the encampment. They penned an open letter to tribal governments saying the protesters' presence "directly threatens the sanctity and security of these (sacred) sites."

The protesters, however, insist their nonstop "spiritual vigil" has prevented the land from being "desecrated."

Glen Cove residents have expressed mixed views on the topic. Some have complained about the demonstrators parking RVs and portable toilets in their neighborhood.

The tribes and GVRD are expected to offer the demonstrators some concessions in an effort to resolve the protesters' concerns. However, details have not been released.

A possible solution to the dispute may become clearer this week. The GVRD board is set to meet Thursday to discuss whether the project should move forward as outlined or be scaled back.

21 Years Since the Mohawk/OkaCrisis and Still Counting:
Some Questions Just Never Go Away
July 11, 2011
Today is the 21st anniversary of the Canadian military siege of theMohawk community of Kanesatake. Each year we pause to contemplate theevents of that summer and consequences of those events since then. People gather to reflect and discuss again and again what really happenedand why. For older people, it feels like yesterday.
Untold numbers of SQ provincial police and over 3,000 fully equippedCanadian soldiers surrounded some 50 Mohawks including children at thetreatment centre in the Pines from July 11 until September 26. Although thousands of shots were fired by SQ during their initial raid, only one person, SQ Corporal Marcel Lemay was killed.
The answer to the question, "Who killed Marcel Lemay" has neverbeen officially answered. It may never be. However, somepeople have very strong suspicions as to who dunnit. The material"evidence" has likely long been completely destroyed. Youmay believe whatever you choose. These are some thoughts on thematter regarding the death of Lemay and Ken Deane, OPP sniper andpossible assassin. Hindsight is 20:20 vision.
Recap of the Events of July 11, 1990
Here's a brief description of what happened that fateful day in July,1990. There is still heated disagreement as to what took place andwhy. We have done the best we can here based on second handinformation from several sources.
The Town of Oka had gotten a civil injunction to dismantle the blockadeset up in the Pines by some Kanesatake Mohawks. It was a disputeover ownership of the land. No crime had been committed, noindictable offence had taken place.
Early on the morning of July 11, 1990, over 100 SQ Surete du Quebecparamilitary police and a number of Montreal area riot cops descended onKanesatake at the Pines. They wore dark suits and bullet proofvests and carried assault rifles, gasmasks and other heavyequipment. Over 50 Mohawks, men, women and children were holding asunrise ceremony outside the Treatment Centre.
The warriors immediately took up positions out of sight. Theunarmed women went to the front to meet the SQ who kept demanding to see"your leader". They just couldn't understand that wedon't have leaders, we are all leaders.
The SQ suddenly started their attack with blinding tear gas andconcussion grenades designed to frighten and disorient people. TheMohawks were steadfast in their purpose to defend the land. One ofthem was able to phone relatives at nearby Kahnawake to alert them of theinvasion.
Mohawk warriors there acted in solidarity with their relatives atKanesatake. They immediately siezed control of the Mercier Bridgegoing between their community and Chateauguay and Montreal. Theyalso blocked all roads leading into Kahnawake.
Meanwhile, at Kanesatake, more SQ were arriving and more Mohawksupporters and other individuals were showing up either in support or tosee what was going on. A front end loader manned by an SQ moved into destroy the Mohawk barricade. Then 4 or 5 heavily equippedmembers of the tactical intervention squad charged in. CorporalLemay was among them. They started shooting their way into thePines in a barrage of bullets that lasted less than one minute. There were police snipers in the trees, in the woods as well as ahelicopter circling overhead.
When the Mohawks held their ground, the cops then made a hasty retreat, abandoning their vehicles and each other. Then the warriors usedthe front end loader and the police vehicles to form a barricade on theroad at the top of the hill looking down into Oka.
Some hours later, the Mohawks learned that the 31 year old Lemay had beenshot and killed. He was the father of a two-year-old daughter andhis wife was pregnant with their second child. The SQ deniedshooting at all until their retreat. The Mohawks said they onlyshot over the heads of the police and had been instructed not to shoot tokill. Most of them did not fire their weapons at all. TheMohawks expressed regret over the death of Marcel Lemay but did notaccept blame. From the very beginning, they questioned whether theSQ shot their own man.

Beedaudjimowin Spring 1993
Just the other day, we were sorting through some old papers when wecame across a Spring 1993 issue of Beedaudjimowin. In those days, most of us were still not online. We communicated by word of mouth, through snail mail, phone and other media. We relied on peopletraveling through our territories to give us the news from othercommunities. We got information from TV, radio andnewspapers.
This particular issue of Beedaudjimowin contained an article called,"Who Killed Marcel Lemay? Coroner's Inquest Becomes Trial byMedia" written by Mikmak Kenn Ross. See endnotes. Thisprompted us to write about it.
Kenn Ross' article was published in response to a coroner's inquest intothe SQ role during the July 11 firefight. Just before the inquest,an internal SQ document was "leaked" to the media, CJMS inMontreal. The confidential report claimed that Mohawk smugglersearned $75million in 1991 and were involved in 2 murders.
CJMS had already been very instrumental at the time of the siege infomenting racial hatred against the Mohawks. This led to a stonethrowing incident in August 1990 when vigilantes attacked Mohawks on theMercier bridge. One elderly Mohawk man died of a heart attack atthe scene.
CJMS used the coroner's report to continue the vilification of thewarriors. According to Ross, "The leak of the report wasused like a well placed bomb to disrupt the true nature of the inquest...[which was] as coroner Guy Gilbert said, to examine 'policies or lack ofgeneral policies, the quality of preparation of the operation itself, theusefulness of the equipment and the training of the participatingpolice'...
"The truth was lost in the fog of SQ accusations and mediamanipulation putting a "spin" on all aspects of theinquest."
The original coroner, Paul Dionne, only interviewed SQ officers -"no Mohawk witnesses were seen". He concluded theMohawks could've done it based on the type of bullet, .223 calibre andthe position of Lemay's body. However, the SQ use the same bulletas does the Canadian military. Ross referred to rumours that theCanadian military had supplied the SQ with weapons andammunition.
One other SQ officer, Pierre Dumas stated he had moved Lemay'sbody. The coroner even wondered whether one of the armed SQ had"accidentally" killed Lemay.
A lot of physical evidence was destroyed by vehicles churning up the dirtand the subsequent removal of all the trees which had been riddled withbullets, their bullets. Photojournalists who photographed policechanging into their SWAT gear were threatened and their equipment andfilm seized and destroyed by enraged cops.
Media reports were carefully controlled and orchestrated. The"spin" was always essentially antiNative. Nothing wasdone to clarify historical relations or grievances.

MNN MohawkNationNews September 2006
In September, 2006, MNN published an article, "Little KnownFacts about Corporal Lemay’s Death in Oka in 1990". Theseare the main facts as we understand them.
A reporter from the independent Montreal newspaper the Mirror met withsome Mohawks to discuss this case in 1991. Lemay had been involvedin an internal investigation of the SQ selling guns to Mohawks atAkwesasne. He had found proof in a cheque from SQ to the Akwesasnetribal cops which was cashed at a gunstore in Valleyfield, Quebec. Lemay was about to go public when he was shot and killed.
A desk cop, he was sent on the front lines in the attack onKanesatake. No one knows who gave the order. Lemay was shotin the side by a very good aim, someone who had to be beside or behindhim, not facing him as the besieged Mohawks were. The bulletpierced his heart.
The SQ did not conduct an investigation into his death, calling it acivilian casualty. Right after he was killed, they went immediatelyto his home and seized all his papers and records relating to the SQweapons sales investigation.
The mainstream media wanted people to think it was a Mohawk warrior whokilled Lemay.
Anti Uranium Protest at Sharbot Lake 2007: One Thing Leads toAnother
In the summer of 2007, the phoney anti uranium mining protests werein full swing at Robertsville mine site near Sharbot Lake, Ontario indisputed Ongwehonweh/Nishnaabe territory. We were working on somearticles with MNN, doing internet research on the military industry and aparticular company called Allen Vanguard. AV was one of thecompanies who used to test their devices and lethal products out back atMREL's facility at Robertsville. We wanted to know more aboutthem.
That is how we ended up reading Ken Deane's obituary. It turned outhe was an employee at AV in 2000 AFTER he was convicted of criminalnegligence causing death for his role in the 1995 shooting death ofunarmed Dudley George. He was kicked out of the OPP in 1997. Deane never served any jail time for murdering a Native protester. The obit posted at OGS Ontario Genealogical Society and since removed, provided several pertinent details of Deane's career. Seeendnotes.
Originally published in the Globe and Mail, it described the Ipperwashconfrontation as "Canada's most important Indian protest sinceQuebec's Oka crisis".
Did Ken Deane Shoot Marcel Lemay?
MNN's publisher was shocked and agitated to learn that Deane had beenat Kanesatake during the 1990 standoff. All those years no oneseemed to know this bit of information.
With all everyone had since learned about Deane, we were quick to becomesuspicious as to why he was at Kanesatake on that fateful day, July 11,1990 when Lemay was shot and killed. Deane was asniper/sharpshooter who was unflappable under stress and well known forhis cool disposition. He was the perfect natural assassin. Hewas trained in SWAT Special Weapons and Tactics and was part of the OPP'sselect TRU Tactics and Rescue Unit.
The SQ version of the same Tactical squad was involved in the attack atthe Pines. What are the names of the members? Where did theSQ get so many of these elite and highly skilled types?? Were KenDeane and other OPP TRU on loan for the "operation"? Currently, the OPP claim to have 3 teams of 12 or 36 TRU. Where didthe others come from?
Where exactly was Deane when Lemay was shot? There was so muchconfusion that there may be no witnesses. But someone had to givethe order. Someone unseen was "calling theshots".
How Deane ended up working in the sensitive military industry is anexample of how the global corporatist minions are rewarded. However, when there was too much heat on the OPP over Deane's fatalshooting of Dudley George, the colonial elitists then distancedthemselves from their loyal slave. Was Deane sacrificed on thealtar of secrecy? He paid the ultimate price.
Just weeks before he was to testify at the Ipperwash inquiry in 2006,Deane was killed in a vehicle accident on Highway 401 near Prescottduring a snow squall. He was one of three OPP officers involved inthe Ipperwash incident who were killed in car accidents on or nearHighway 401.
Such chilling revelations are not conclusive evidence in a court of lawyet they arouse such serious suspicions that they should beinvestigated. It looks like Deane's death was all too convenientfor the corrupt authorities who want to cover their tracks. Conspiracy is part of their methodology.
Shades of the hasty execution of Timothy McVeigh. Dead men don'ttalk and cannot be made to talk in a court of law.
Who is there honest enough and brave enough to bring light to thisoutstanding matter of Who killed Marcel Lemay?? No one individualhas yet been accused, arrested or even investigated, that we know of, inhis fatal shooting at Kanesatake July 11, 1990.
Several of the Mohawk warriors who were inside at the Pines during those76 days, have since died, some from heart attacks. Haudenosauneepeople continue to feel besieged by frequent RCMP raids which areviolations of our Indigenous sovereignty. The Montreal Gazettecontinues to publish damning and insensitive content on the Mohawkcommunities, mostly about the cigarette trade.
The violence, harassment and vilification of Indigenous people must endso that everyone can find healing and peace. Without justice, therecan be no peace. How is this possible when Canadian society isimmersed in police statism and most "Canadians" don't evennotice??

"Who Killed Marcel Lemay? Coroner's inquest becomes trial bymedia
by Kenn Ross
"The recent coroner's inquest into the death of Surete de Quebec SQCorporal Marcel Lemay and the events that led to the Oka crisis in thesummer of 1990 should disturb everyone. Not because of what theinquest resolved or didn't resolve but because of the attempts by the SQto shape the inquest into a tool for its own use. By focusing onCorporal Lemay, and in the absense of an identifiable gunman, the SQ havetried to "prove" an entire people guilty in the death of Lemayand solely responsible for the stand-off which ensued. The effecthas been a trial by media and an abrogation of the SQ's ownculpability.
Leaked Report
The tone was set on the eve of the inquest, January 19, with the leak ofa confidential document by a source within the SQ regarding Mohawksmuggling activities. The document was given to radio station CJMSin Montreal and its contents broadcast. The station also made itavailable to other media organizations. The report, guaranteed toincite strong emotions, claimed that Mohawk smugglers earned $75millionin 1991 from their activities and that the same group was involved in twoMontreal area murders.
That CJMS received the document is important. CJMS took a decidelynon-objective view of the crisis, fuelling mob passions and racism at thebarricades in Chateauguay and Oka. It was CJMS, monitoring theMohawk radio station CKRK, that told vigilantes where and when Mohawkwomen, children and the elderly would be evacuated, resulting in thestone throwing incident in August 1990. A Mohawk man died of aheart attack as a result of that incident.
CJMS sent out a mobile studio to the barricades for broadcasts onsite. Popular CJMS radio host Gilles Proulx incited listeners withhostile verbal attacks on the Mohawk people. Right wing groupsbegan to mix with the thickening crowds. Photographed among themwas Michel Larocque, head of Longitude 74, the Quebec chapter of the KKKKu Klux Klan.
One questions the journalistic responsibility of broadcasting the SQdocument, and the station's integrity overall. Why wasn't its roleduring Oka investigated? Was the leak the result of one or moredisgruntled SQ officers acting alone, out of frustration? Or couldit be proposed that the SQ condoned the leak itself at some level inorder to set the stage, making it look like an internal lapse? Whatever the truth, they could have chosen no better agent ofdissemination than CJMS.
.223 calibre bullet
That Corporal Lemay was shot by a Mohawk warrior is taken as fact by theSQ. At least some of the warriors had .223 calibre ammunition andthis calibre of bullet killed Lemay. The SQ and the originalcoroner in the case also stated that the position of Lemay's bodyindicated that the bullet had come from where the Mohawks were during thefirefight. The coroner, Paul Dionne, based his assertions oninterviews with the SQ only - no Mohawk witnesses were seen.
The SQ also use a .223 bullet, though claimed the one that killed Lemaywas not of the same type; the autopsy revealed the bullet to be metaljacketed, a kind used mostly by military forces. During theinquest, however, ballistics expert Jean Dion testified that some of theweapons used by the SQ in the assault had indeed been fired and that the.223 bullet could have come from the SQ weapons tested.
As for the position of Lemay's body, Pierre Dumas, an SQ member who wasin Lemay's team, has testified that he shifted the position of thebody. Dumas also could not say with certainty where the shot camefrom. Military vehicles later chewed up the scene, destroyingphysical evidence.
The alternative is that one of the four other SQ officers with Lemay shothim accidentally. The controversy over the bullet and the directionof the shot makes this possible. With five armed men charging intothe pines amid smoke, concussion grenades and tear gas, their visionperhaps impaired by gas masks, it's conceivable that in the confusionLemay could have been shot by one of his own people. While the SQmaintains the ammunition wasn't their type, could they have received suchmetal jacketed bullets?
Military involvement
There are reports of the SQ borrowing weapons from the Canadian armedforces before the raid. If true, this prompts a number ofquestions: What kind of weapons? Were they of a type usingmetal jacketed .223 calibre ammunition, the kind usually used by militaryforces? Who gave the SQ permission within the military for such anextraordinary request? Were the weapons "signedout"? If so, by whom? Again, Quebec looks as if itreceived favours beyond that of other provinces. Can one seriouslyimagine Alberta or B.C. police forces accessing armouries with suchease?
Video evidence
The SQ have pointed out news footage with a Mohawk claiming, "We gotone". But the footage had been spliced a great deal forbroadcast and the Mohawk's lawyer, Richard Corriveau, places the time ofday later than the morning raid, which occurred at 8:40am. "Wegot one" is hardly "We shot one" and is not in itselfconclusive. Also, the SQ could not provide the identities of theCBC reporting team responsible for the footage.
Photojournalists who had taken pictures of the scene where Lemay diedalso came across police in Oka changing into SWAT gear the sameday. The pictures were never developed. After threatening tokill the journalists, their equipment and film was seized and destroyedby the enraged police officers. These photos could have perhapsgiven objective evidence about Lemay's death.
[Yeah, like, Was Deane one of these guys who didn't want to bephotographed? -ed]
The physical evidence was disturbed and the eyewitness accounts areeither contradictory or unsure: the Mohawks said they fired abovethe SQ unit and could have cut them all down easily if they had wantedto; the SQ unit members say they never fired until retreating withLemay's body to cover themselves. Evidence from audio sources, a"neutral" source, record twenty-three seconds of intensegunfire. How could the SQ claim they fired after the Mohawks whilewithdrawing? There was no time. Objectively, the exchange offire was almost simultaneous and without break. More hard evidencelike the photographs, might have built a reliable picture of events aseye witness account of almost anything are notoriouslyinaccurate.
Culpability in Lemay's death cannot be assigned until the evidence pointsconclusively in one direction. After two years, one still cannotsay beyond doubt that it was a Mohawk who killed Lemay.
Redirection
The SQ went on the offensive in their presentations. The true pointof the inquest, as coroner Guy Gilbert said, was to examine"policies or lack of general policies, the quality of preparation ofthe operation itself, the usefulness of equipment and the training ofparticipating police". The SQ was actually the party on thedefensive, under the microscope, but attacked in response. Clearly, they seemed worried about their own culpability at Oka and focused on theMohawks and the negative atmosphere in Quebec that surrounds Nativepeople generally to deflect attention from themselves. The leak ofthe report was used like a well placed bomb to disrupt the true nature ofthe inquest.
That the SQ would engage in such redirection is not withoutprecedent. The FBI falsified evidence and testimony and otherwiselied to the government of Canada to extradite Leonard Peltier illegallyto the US in the wake of the 1975 shooting deaths of two FBIagents. The evidence is compelling for his release from prison, though he is still incarcerated after sixteen [now 34] years. TheFBI needed a guilty party, someone to blame.
A large part of the FBI need for convicting Peltier was due to thenumbers of Native people winning their court cases when the FBI broughtthem to trial. Again, someone had to be blamed, there had to be aculprit, and in the absence of one, the FBI 'invented' Peltier.
The same pattern occurred after Oka with most of the defendants beingreleased or receiving minor sentences to the SQ's alarm. Theycouldn't 'invent' a Peltier, although they tried their best with RonCross (Lasagna). When the army apprehended Cross they didn't whiskhim away to the army base with the others, but handed him over to theSQ. Corporal Lemay himself has become an object for the use of theSQ, holding an entire people responsible for his death while ignoringwhat the inquest was really about: the SQ's role at Oka and itsparticular responsibility for what happened.
The inquest was supposed to be about getting to the truth of Oka, but itwasn't found. The truth was lost in the fog of SQ accusations andmedia manipulation, putting a "spin" on all aspects of theinquest. The observer is left with more questions and suspicionsthan certitude.
The final question is: Are we in need of another inquest or a RoyalCommission? Like the armoured vehicles churning up the site ofLemay' death, the truth may just get further disturbed and lost.

"The Amnesty report blames the tensions on “the breakdown incommunication between senior officers at the scene, the decision toforcefully arrest leaders of the protest at a potentially volatilemoment,” and an OPP decision to call in its paramilitary Tactics andRescue Unit TRU."

Kenneth
DEANE, Officer And Security Expert (1960-2006)
Former Ontario Provincial Police officer enjoyed a promising career in aparamilitary squad until he shot and killed native protester DudleyGEORGE in 1995. He left the force in 2002 and died in a traffic accidenton Saturday
By F.F. LANGAN, Special to The Globe and Mail, Page S7
Toronto -- Kenneth DEANE's life was changed -- some would say ruined --by an incident that's now known as Ipperwash. On September 6, 1995, heshot and killed Anthony (Dudley) GEORGE at Ontario's Ipperwash ProvincialPark during what was Canada's most important Indian protest sinceQuebec's Oka crisis of 1990.
Until that night, Mr. DEANE of the Ontario Provincial Police had anexemplary record, one that had helped smooth his way into the exclusiveranks of the Ontario Provincial Police's tactical rescue unit. As actingsergeant, he was leading a highly trained, four-man team of marksmen onthe night he shot Mr. GEORGE.
"The whole sequence took place in 20, 30, 35 seconds," Mr.DEANE said at his trial in July of 1997. He was convicted of criminalnegligence causing death. In his 2001 book, One Dead Indian, Toronto Starreporter Peter EDWARDS recounted the Ontario Provincial Police officer'sdescription of what led up to the shooting. Mr. DEANE said he saw flashesof light coming from the barrel of a weapon inside a school bus thatprotesters were using to barge into an Ontario Provincial Police riotsquad.
"It was an attempt to shoot a police officer," he told thecourt. However, he chose not to open fire because of the many officerswho were in the way. "I saw a distinct muzzle flash originate fromthe interior of the bus."
The book went on to describe the actual firing of the weapon and Mr.DEANE's testimony that Mr. GEORGE was armed and had presented a threat."I observed him shoulder a rifle and in a half-crouched position, scanned [the rifle] over our position." Mr. DEANE said he firedthree shots from his highly accurate, Heckler & Koch sub-machine gun"as quick as I could."
"He [Mr. GEORGE] immediately went down on one knee and immediatelygot back up."
Still on the road, Mr. GEORGE looked to his right and left and walked afew steps, Mr. DEANE testified. He then did something rather odd forsomeone who was mortally wounded, with a broken collar bone, cracked ribsand a punctured lung, Mr. DEANE said. He testified that Mr. GEORGE raisedhis arm and threw the rifle into a grass-covered field, leaving himselfunarmed and exposed to police fire.
Although Mr. DEANE had provided a detailed description of the rifle, another tactical rescue unit officer who was just metres away during theincident testified that he had observed Mr. GEORGE holding "a poleor stick." The officer also said that the only muzzle flashes he sawhad come from his own gun. Hundreds of other shots were fired that night, all by the police, and the Ontario Provincial Police has since arrived atthe view that the protesters were not armed.
For his part, Mr. DEANE fired a total of seven shots. Four had been aimedat other protesters and three at Mr. GEORGE. One bullet missed, onestruck him in the lower leg, and the last found his torso.
Though Mr. DEANE spoke in a calm and self-assured manner, the judge athis trial did not believe him. Mr. Justice Hugh FRASER as much as calledhim a liar and ruled that Mr. GEORGE had been unarmed. He rejected thenotion that Mr. DEANE had an "honest but mistaken belief" andfound that Mr. GEORGE did not have a weapon when he was killed. He saidMr. DEANE had concocted his evidence "in an ill-fated attempt todisguise the fact that an unarmed man had been shot."
Judge FRASER, who also ruled that some other police officers hadfalsified evidence to support Mr. DEANE, found him guilty and sentencedhim to a conditional sentence of two years less a day, plus 180 days ofcommunity service but no house arrest.
Mr. DEANE appealed the conviction to the Supreme Court of Canada. InFebruary, 2000, the court ruled there were no grounds for a new trial. Hedid win a small victory, however. The Supreme Court denied an appeal byCrown prosecutors who had sought jail time instead of the conditionalsentence.
"I still believe Ken DEANE was an honest police office who was harddone by by the justice system," lawyer Norman PEEL, who hadrepresented Mr. DEANE at the trial, said yesterday. "He wasmisjudged as being cold and withdrawn when, in fact, he was justquiet." After the conviction, Mr. DEANE continued in the OntarioProvincial Police. Among other things, he was a bomb-disposal expert anda specialist in fighting biker gangs and terrorists. His fellow officerscame to his defence, believing he had been victimized.
"He was an asset to the Ontario Provincial Police," saidInspector Robert BRUCE, who at that time believed Mr. DEANE "shouldremain in the position that he's in."
But Ipperwash continued to haunt Mr. DEANE.
"I sincerely apologize to the family and Friends of Dudley GEORGEand to his community for causing the terrible loss that they have beenforced to endure," he said at a discipline hearing in September of2001. For all that, he always maintained he had done nothing wrong thenight Mr. GEORGE was shot and he fought to stay on the force.
It was a battle he lost. In October, 2001, he pleaded to a charge ofdiscreditable conduct under the Police Services Act. Four months later,an inquiry by police adjudicator Loyall CANN forced him to resign. Ms.CANN, a former deputy chief of the Toronto police force, said theshooting of Mr. GEORGE had resulted in "the most seriousconviction" ever recorded against an Ontario Provincial Policeofficer.
"What could possibly be more shocking to society than to have asworn, fully trained and experienced police officer, while on duty, infull uniform [and] using a police-issued firearm, kill an unarmedcitizen," said Ms. CANN.
She ordered him to resign or be fired. He quit the next day and laterfound a job working in security at an Ontario Hydro nuclear station. Morerecently, he was Canadian sales manager for Canadian Allen-VanguardResponse Systems, a publicly traded company that providesstate-of-the-art anti-terrorist equipment and systems.
Kenneth DEANE grew up in London, Ontario, the son of the late RobertDEANE and Katherine DEANE. One of six children, he had long dreamed ofbeing a policeman. After leaving high school, he studied law and securityat Fanshawe College and then joined the London police force. He was nextaccepted by the Ontario Provincial Police and quickly became involvedwith the tactical rescue unit, the special squad deployed inhostage-taking situations and in emergencies.
At his trial, a fellow officers described the patience Mr. DEANE haddisplayed during a hostage situation in Dryden, Ontario, when a man witha rifle threatened two women. The incident ended without violence."He does not react emotionally, said Staff Sergeant Brian DEEVY,also a member of the tactical rescue unit. "I have never seen himlose control."
Mr. DEANE had also served with Ontario Provincial Police officers sent tohelp deal with the Oka crisis, and in 1991 had attended an incident atGrassy Narrows in Northern Ontario when an Ontario Provincial Policeofficer was shot dead.
The killing of Mr. GEORGE caused an outcry against the tactics andactions of the Ontario Provincial Police and the government of Ontario. It triggered the Ipperwash inquiry that has been sitting since July of2004 under Mr. Justice Sidney LINDEN. Mr. DEANE was scheduled to appearat the hearing next month and his testimony was keenly anticipated.
In the type of coincidence that feeds conspiracy theorists, Mr. DEANE isthe third Ontario Provincial Police officer involved in the Dudley GEORGEshooting to be killed in a traffic accident. Sgt. Margaret EVE, who triedto negotiate with the natives at Ipperwash before the shooting, died in acrash involving a transport truck on Highway 401 near Chatham, OntarioInspector Dale LINTON, the commander who gave the orders to Mr. DEANE'steam, was killed in a single-vehicle accident near Smith's Falls inOctober of 2000.
Mr. DEANE was killed in a traffic accident on Highway 401 near Prescottin Eastern Ontario. Snow squalls had caused vehicles to slow or come to ahalt and his Ford Explorer clipped a tractor trailer that was blockingthe road. Before he could extricate his vehicle, a second highway trucktravelling behind him was unable to stop and the sport utility vehiclewas crushed.
Kenneth DEANE was born in October of 1960. He died on February 25, 2006.He was 45. He leaves his wife, Lucie SIROIS. Also an Ontario ProvincialPolice officer, she was injured some years ago while investigating atraffic accident. Additionally, he leaves his brother Bill and sistersBarbara, Nancy, Sue and Judy. A funeral is set for 11 a.m. tomorrow inSudbury, Ontario

Union, First Nation biz clash over employee taxes
SARNIA, Ont. - The head of a First Nations welding company in southwestern Ontario is shrugging off protests by the Ironworkers’ Union, claiming he doesn’t have to pay employee taxes for his aboriginal staff, potentially sparking a larger battle between unions and First Nation groups.
“(The union officials) can say what they want,” Tim Squire, founder of Chiefswood Welding, told QMI Agency. “We have different rules. We have a non-union company. We don’t go by white man rules.”
The union said it has filed a complaint with Revenue Canada about Chiefswood’s payroll practices.
Section 87 of the federal Indian Act dictates that income earned by natives working on-reserve isn’t taxable. However, income earned off-reserve is taxable.
But Squire is defiant.
“As far as we’re concerned, all of Ontario is a reserve,” he said. “All this land is ours. With all the treaties we’ve got, we don’t have to pay taxes.”
Squire said six natives employed by his Ohsweken, Ont.-based company are working at a construction site in Sarnia.
About 30 ironworkers set up information pickets to protest.
“We’ve got no local workers on site,” said Lash Ray, organizer with the Ironworkers’ Ontario District Council. “We can’t compete when they aren’t paying tax.
“It’s putting all contractors at a disadvantage.”
A Revenue Canada spokesman wouldn’t comment on the complaint or investigation, citing privacy issues.

Be Part of a Mass Exorcism on behalf of children everywhere
Come to the International Convergence of Light

Join the Circle of Truth surrounding the Vatican in Rome on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at high noon

Faith communities, indigenous elders, light workers, and people of compassion will gather from around the world to hold a mass Exorcism, prayer vigil and fast outside the Vatican to summon forth the power of truth and love and expel the darkness of centuries of crime, violence and corruption.
Our Convergence is unaligned religiously and politically. Our common ground is an absolute reverence for children and the earth. We come to protect the innocent and expel the force that harms them and protects those responsible.

Beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, October 30, 2011, thousands of us will form a human peace chain around the Vatican and will bring music, prayers and testimonies to exorcise the forces of untruth and violence in the Catholic church.
Our exorcism, prayer and fast circle will continue for 24 hours and will be followed by other events.

Please endorse our Circle of Light and circulate this notice. Join us on October 30 in Rome.
If you cannot, then hold your own circle of exorcism around a Roman Catholic church in your community on the same day.

This WEEK ON NATIVE AMERICA CALLING: Friday, July 15, 2011– The Browning of America:
Racial demographics in the U.S. are changing every day. According to a recent study, by 2042, a majority of Americans will be people of color. Already, almost half of all young people are kids of color. According to the latest census data there are several states like California, Texas, Hawaii, New Mexico and the District of Columbia that have more people of color than whites. Is America ready for minorities to become the majority? America may be browning but what about Native America, are we becoming whiter? Guests TBA.

Wow! 70,000 signers in 24 hours -- and we have 3 more days to build ourcall. Sign now and forward to everyone!
Dear friends,

An American hedge fund is about to break ground on a massive miningproject that could poison a million people's drinking water, wouldcreate an open pit deeper than Niagara Falls and decimate thousands ofacres of lush farmland -- and we have 3 days to stop them. Sign thepetition to stop the mega-quarry:

An American hedge fund is about to break ground on a massivemining project that could poison a million people's drinking waterand the headwaters for five major rivers. They want to create an open pitdeeper than Niagara Falls and decimate thousands of acres of lushfarmland -- and we have 3 days to stop them.
For years, Highland Companies deceived Ontario residents, posing as apotato farming company and quietly buying up thousands of acres of landfrom local farmers. Then, it was suddenly revealed that the massiveplot of farmland would be converted into a limestone quarry -- a 2300acre pit so deep it would seriously interfere with the ground watersystem in the region. But, in order to start digging, Highland mustwin approval from Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey.
Jeffrey is taking 3 more days to consider public opinion on thisquarry before making her decision. We can deliver an overwhelming waveof opposition to Highland's destructive plan. Sign the petition, forward it to everyone and it will be submitted to Jeffrey before theconsultation period ends.

Highland's mega-quarry is smack dab in the middle of farmland thewhole country depends on for food production. If built, it could poisonclean ground water that feeds the lakes and rivers many Canadians usefor drinking water. The quarry would require over seven thousand trucksto transport limestone each and every day, upping carbon emissions andrequiring new roads to handle the exploding traffic -- further destroyingthe natural habitat of hundreds of species of animals. The city-sized pitwould scar the land long after the mining was finished.
But, residents and environmental activists are working hard to oppose thequarry's license -- even the Environment Minister has called forfurther assessments. Ontario's Liberal government faces a toughre-election fight in October and Liberal Minister Linda Jeffrey isconcerned about public opinion in these key months before votes are cast.A national call will put pressure on Jeffrey and her party to stand upfor Canada's environment, its farmers and the fresh water many Canadiansdepend on for survival.
Let's bring the voice of all Canadians to Ontario's Minister of NaturalResources and force her to kill Highland's plan for environmentaldestruction. Sign the petition and then forward widely.

Ontario's government should not be allowed to destroy the rivers, forestsand farm land we all depend on for survival. For too long, provincialgovernments have kept key environmental decisions out of the nationalconversation -- we have a chance to change that. As one country, with acommitment to the environment and the health and safety of all Canadians,we can speak up.
With hope,
Emma, Ricken, Iain, Pascal and the rest of the Avaaz team.

WRITTEN BY A POLICE OFFICER...COULD SAVE A LIFE

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one's life.

In daylight hours, refresh yourself

of these things to do

in an emergency situation...

This is for you,

and for you to share

with your wife,

your children,

everyone you know.

After reading these 9 crucial tips,

forward them to someone you care about.

It never hurts to be careful

in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :

The elbow is the strongest point

on your body.

If you are close enough to use it, do!
2.. Learned this from a tourist guide.

If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,

DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.

Toss it away from you....

Chances are that he is more interested

in your wallet and/or purse than you,

and he will go for the wallet/purse.

RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car,

kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole

and start waving like crazy...

The driver won't see you, but everybody else will.

This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars

after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit

doing their chequebook, or making a list, etc.

DON'T DO THIS!

The predator will be watching you, and this

is the perfect opportunity for him to get in

on the passenger side, put a gun to your head,

and tell you where to go.

AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR ,

LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE...
If someone

is in the car

with a gun

to your head

DO NOT DRIVE OFF,

Repeat:

DO NOT DRIVE OFF!

Instead gun the engine

and speed into anything, wrecking the car.
Hit the right front side of the car
this will not not jam the drivers door
in the crash

Your Air Bag will save you.

If the person is in the back seat

they will get the worst of it .

As soon as the car crashes

bail out and run.

It is better than having them find your body

in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting

into your car in a parking lot,

or parking garage:

A.) Be aware:

look around you,

look into your car,

at the passenger side floor ,

and in the back seat..

B.) If you are parked next to a big van,

enter your car from the passenger door.

Most serial killers attack their victims

by pulling them into their vans while the women

are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car

parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,

and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone

in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back

into the mall, or work, and get a

guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator

instead of the stairs.

Stairwells are horrible places to be alone

and the perfect crime spot.

This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun

and you are not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN!

The predator will only hit you (a running target)

4 in 100 times; and even then,

it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ..

RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying

to be sympathetic:

STOP

It may get you raped, or killed.

Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking,

well educated man, who ALWAYS played

on the sympathies of unsuspecting women.

He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often

asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle,

which is when he abducted
his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me that her friend heard

a crying baby on her porch the night before last,

and she called the police because it was late

and she thought it was weird.. The police told her

'Whatever you do, DO NOT

open the door..'

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby

had crawled near a window, and she was worried

that it would crawl to the street and get run over.

The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way,

whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.'

He told her that they think a serial killer

has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax

women out of their homes thinking that someone

dropped off a baby... He said they have not verified it,

but have had several calls by women saying that

they hear baby's cries outside their doors

when they're home alone at night.

10. Water scam!

If you wake up in the middle
of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a
burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your
outside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate and
then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbours!

Please pass this on

This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because

the Crying Baby Theory was mentioned on

America 's Most Wanted when they profiled

the serial killer in Louisiana
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know.

It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle..

I was going to send this to the ladies only,

but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc.,

you may want to pass it onto them, as well.

Send this to any woman you know that may need

to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it

and it's better to be safe than sorry..

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or
a loved one's life
