The Cherokee Nation has extended the deadline to accept nominations for the bi-annual Cancer Summit Service Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that have made contributions in promoting cancer control throughout the Cherokee Nation. Cherokee Elder Care Gets New Bus for Center, Community: 1/18/2010

Cherokee Elder Care is the recipient of a new 14 passenger bus complete with an automatic wheelchair lift, allowing for easier transport for the elderly and disabled. The purchase of the bus was a partnership effort between the center and the State of Oklahoma, and will be used by the center and by other community groups needing transportation service of the elderly.

Sequoyah Senior Accepts Naval Preparatory Academy Appointment: 1/14/2010

Sequoyah Schools’ senior Lynsey Dry has received official notification that she has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School located on Naval Station Newport in Newport, R.I. Dry will sign her official letter of acceptance to attend the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School at a special signing event and reception hosted by Sequoyah Schools on Friday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. in the lower level of Sequoyah’s The Place Where They Play. Family, friends and media are encouraged to attend.

Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Approves Additional Funding for Day Work Program: 1/13/2010 12:47:00 PM

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council voted to increase the popular Day Work Program by an additional $750,000 during the Council’s monthly meeting Monday evening in Tahlequah. The program was announced in September and was designed to provide immediate assistance to Cherokee citizens that are unemployed and need a temporary helping hand.

Cherokee Nation Recipient of Humanities Council Award: 1/12/2010

The Cherokee Nation has been named the 2010 recipient of the Humanities in Education award for its significant contribution to the humanities in Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Humanities Council. The Nation was selected for the award in recognition of the tribe’s Cherokee language program and the Cherokee Nation Immersion School.

Cherokee Nation To Offer Native Americans Specially Priced Nike Air Native N7 Shoes For A Limited Time: 1/12/2010

The old saying: “If the shoe fits, wear it,” takes on a whole new meaning for Native Americans across the United States. Nike researchers studied the feet of more than 200 people from 70 tribes nationwide and determined that Native Americans have a much wider and taller foot than the average American. Armed with this study, Nike created the Nike Air Native N7 that is designed specifically for Native American feet, and features a wider, larger toe box, fewer seams and a thicker sock liner for comfort.

Cherokee Nation Seeks Help with Valentines for Veterans Project: 1/11/2010 10:07:00 AM

Valentines Day is just around the corner and the Cherokee Nation is organizing its annual Valentines for Veterans campaign to honor elderly, disabled and hospitalized veterans by presenting them with handmade valentines. Cherokee Nation is encouraging area groups to join the fun by making valentines for the project. The volunteer-driven project delivers the valentines to veterans located primarily in Veterans Affairs nursing and medical centers throughout the tribe’s jurisdictional area.
