With the National Holiday now only a little more than two weeks away, it’s time to be making your plans to visit Tahlequah, Oklahoma to enjoy the traditional Cherokee celebration on Labor Day Weekend, September 3, 4 and 5!

Join us that weekend at the Cherokee Heritage Center for an arts and crafts fair, live entertainment, demonstrations, food & drink, plus the 15th Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale. Visit the Ancient Villiage, Adams Corner Rural Village and the Trail of Tears Exhibit, too! The museum will be open from 9am until 6pm Friday thru Sunday.

Cherokee Nation recently recognized a few of its youngest workers for their outstanding achievements over the summer.
More than 300 Native American youth participated in the tribe’s Summer Youth Employment Program, a longtime tribal program that gives young people the opportunity to gain valuable employment skills and earn a little pocket money by placing them in jobs in their home communities during the summer school break

The Cherokee Nation joined forces with Tahlequah City Hospital recently to fight workforce obesity through a weight loss competition among hospital employees.

“One of our main goals is to have a healthy and happy people,” said Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. “Competitions such as this one with our healthcare partner, Tahlequah City Hospital, are a fun way the participants can set goals to become healthier and live a more active lifestyle.”

Behavioral Health Community Satellite Groups Complete Academy Requirements : 8/11/2010

Nine area community groups recently completed their requirements for the Community Anti-drug Network operated through the Cherokee Nation during a three-week academy. The groups will now submit their products and plans to the national program and will be eligible to officially graduate during the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America conference in Washington, D.C., next February.

Animal Assisted Therapy an Option for Addiction Counseling: 8/11/2010

There is a saying that a dog is a man’s best friend. According to Rachel Howard, if a friend can be someone you can turn to when you need to talk, that saying very well could be true. To test that theory, she and the Cherokee Nation are trying it out as a way to help adolescents combat drug and alcohol addiction.

The Cherokee Nation was recently presented with an eagle staff, which will be displayed in a place of honor at the tribe’s planned veterans center as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Cherokee service men and women. The staff was originally a gift to the Cherokee Nation Color Guard from the Warriors of Anikituwah, a Cherokee dance group from Cherokee, N.C.

Cherokee Nation Sponsors Community Art Hop: 8/10/2010

Labor Day weekend in Tahlequah is always filled with exciting activities, but this year art lovers will be able to enjoy a special downtown event designed just for them. Cherokee Nation is sponsoring its first annual downtown art hop on Friday, Sept. 3, from 6–8 p.m.

Cherokee Nation LIHEAP Plan Open for Public Comment: 8/10/2010

Cherokee Nation is currently in the process of submitting an application to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program grant. A draft of the fiscal year 2011 LIHEAP application is available for public review.

The Cherokee Nation announced that it will be holding a hearing for public comment on one of its programs. The tribe’s Women, Infants, and Children Program will hold a public hearing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, in the WIC Conference Room at the Male Seminary Complex on Graham Avenue in Tahlequah

The Cherokee Nation will host its sixth annual State of Sequoyah Conference on Thursday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Sept. 3, in the Northeastern State University NET Building auditorium. The conference is a featured part of the 58th Cherokee National Holiday held over Labor Day weekend.

Cherokee Nation Hosting Tobacco Cessation Class: 8/9/2010 11:40:00 AM

The Cherokee Nation will be offering a free seven-week Freedom From Smoking tobacco cessation class on Tuesdays each week. Classes will begin Aug. 17, from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the Tribal Services Conference Room at the Cherokee Nation W.W. Keeler Complex in Tahlequah. The class will run through Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010.

Cherokee Nation Recognized for 30 Years of Volunteer Tax Service: 8/9/2010 8:25:00 AM

The Cherokee Nation has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service for its 30 years of volunteer income tax preparation, provided free to citizens of local communities within the tribe’s jurisdiction. For the past three decades the Cherokee Nation has partnered with the IRS to coordinate a localized Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The VITA program trains and certifies Cherokee Nation volunteers to do state and federal income tax preparation using IRS training and testing materials.

In 1790, the slave population in the United States approached 700,000. The density of this population surrounded the Cherokee Nation, showing the encroachment of non-Indian wealth upon the lands of the Cherokee people.
